  1. Thank you Guacemole :-) Yes, I figured this out. We only have the chance of assistantships, fellowships, and campus jobs.
  2. Thank you for your response ternwild ? I will put this in consideration...
  3. Thank you Moods for your helpful response. More likely, I may go visit there if I get accepted, I don't know. The bust ticket back & forth is about 130$, & that's too much to spend, especially if I end up not being accepted. I don't know. I'm already studying in another university, & am applying to transfer, because that other university has a research center specialized in a field I'm highly interested in.
  4. hey guys ? One university I applied to, sent me saying that they found merit in my application, & invite me to take a tour in their university during their Graduate Showcase event, to get to know the program better, & they can interview me too. They say if I can't make it, I should email them to find another way for an interview. Honestly, the trip would be expensive, I can afford it, but it wouldn't be that much convenient. So, I prefer video-conferencing for an interview. But I want to ask, would skipping the visit & suggesting video-conference for interview, would that lower my chances to be accepted?
  5. hey everyone... ? I'm presently studying as an international student in my first year PhD in america... i'm considering to transfer to another university, so i'm seeking your advice... the university i'm in right now provides me with a first year fellowship & then an assistantship... however, professors here don't do research in the field that i want to do my dissertation in... & furthermore, the one professor here who's the closest to the line of research i want to do, turned out to be very "dictational", & is not open to the student synthesizing ideas & providing criticisms of their own - & this makes me feel shackled in my creativity & depressed... however, the line of research i want to specialize in, is very rare... it's the world-systems evolution & analysis, within sociology... so far, i only found 2 universities, each one having only one single professor doing this kind of research, so i'm applying to them now... but i'm not sure if i should apply to other universities as well, even though they may have no professors specializing in this research, but they may have more diversified specializations & a larger number of professors who are more open-minded than the professor here in my present university... the department i'm studying in right now, has a very small number of professors, with a very limited number of areas of research... but i also feel shy, that after they provided me with funding, i'd leave them to another university... what's your advice? should i apply to transfer to other universities (other than these two that i'm applying to right now), just for the sake of studying with more diversified & open-minded professors?
  6. thank you so much dear warelin ? yeah, that makes sense... anyway, i just found that they "strongly encourage" international students to make/send evaluations of their sent transcripts! & this costs so much... so i decided not to apply there, 'cause all the odds for me to be accepted in JHU are against me (low acceptance rate - only one professor there doing the research i want, & she didn't respond to me)!!!
  7. oh, thank you warelin ? i see... actually, this is referenced in the sociology department's application & admission for graduate studies, here: https://soc.jhu.edu/graduate/admissions/ specifically in the second paragraph of the tuition & financial aid section: Unfortunately, though, our financial support does not cover some expenses that a student may incur upon their arrival, including rent and other living expenses until they receive their first paycheck. Additionally, international students are ineligible for federal financial aid. i got confused too when i read this, 'cause i thought that graduate funding is not related to federal financial aid! so i'm not sure why they're mentioning this in the application page for graduate studies!!!
  8. hey mementobr ? first of all, it seems to me that your qualifications, especially having publications (which is rare for those who didn't get a phd yet!), & your professional experience, make you an excellent candidate for phd... second, i sincerely encourage you to apply for computer science, if that's what your heart/mind has grown to be interested in... we don't have to stick our whole life to one specialization... instead we have to be flexible & move from one specialization to another, according to what our experiences in life are directing us toward, to become expanded in our knowledge & experience through inter- & trans- disciplinarity rather than getting stuck in being a narrowly-focused uni-disciplinary... 'cause we can only realize our purpose in life, & what we truly desire, by accepting to change & move from one place to another, one specialization to another, while our experiences increase & expand, heading us toward realizing our true desire... like you, i also started by studying political science, but as i expanded more with my experiences & knowledge, i realized that i want to specialize in sociology (that has a wider scope in approaching the dilemmas of human societies)... while i was in egypt (with b.sc. & m.sc. degrees in political science), i kept on applying abroad for phd in sociology (even though many people told me not to, because it decreases my chances to be accepted, 'cause it's not my former specialization), but i followed my heart/mind anyway, & kept searching & applying... & now i'm writing you this while studying for my phd in sociology in america ? it took me two to three years of searching... & my tips, according to my experience in this, which is limited of course, or might not be very correct in some points, could be summarized as the following: *1* do not suffice by searching for programs in europe!!! instead, let your search be all over the world... from what i know (& again this may not be very correct), europe & australia, although their scholarship opportunities are better in terms of time & finance - that is, a phd there would only take you about three years, no more, & the salary/stipend that you'll be given would be higher... still, getting the chance to be accepted for a phd scholarship there is much less & tougher... i don't know what is the reason for this, maybe because they do not finance scholarships much, so they offer much more limited & competitive opportunities for them! also, europe & australia would require you to present a phd research project in their applications... & even though you'll end up doing a phd project anyway sooner or later, but you'll have to do it while applying for universities there (so they can accept you or not, based on it), rather than do it after you are matriculated in the phd program... but one advantage phd programs in europe & australia have (or at least from what my search has made me find, but i might be wrong), is that you're not required to take preliminary phd courses... you can instead choose the research track alone, & get done with the dissertation (hence, i guess, why the phd duration is shorter there)... however, in america & canada, it's the other way around!!! it's much easier to be accepted for a phd in america & canada, with a graduate assistantship... you're not required to present a phd proposal in your application... but the disadvantages are that the duration of phd is longer (4 to 5 years or longer), & you're required to take preliminary courses... & the stipend that you get for your assistantship would barely cover your basic needs (rent, food, medication, etc. - although it's possible, of course, i'm doing it myself right now, but you'd have to follow a very frugal lifestyle!)... there are also other places in the world you can try... like in asia - china, india, singapore... i was considering to apply for universities in japan too. if you consider this, i think the only way to go study with a scholarship in japan is through the japanese government - that is you go to the website of the japanese embassy in brazil, & check their section on studying in japan, & the requirements of their scholarship... *2* i guess you already know that, but i'll say it anyway... of course you have to take the toefl (test of english as a foreign language) test as a student who comes from a non-english speaking country... aim yourself to get no less than a 100/120 in the iBT TOEFL test, so you are sure that you get the highest grade that covers all the minimum grades of toefl required by various departments... when you apply to america & canada, you're also required to take the GRE test... it's much tougher than the toefl test, but it's worth taking the shot, if being accepted in a university in america or canada has a higher chance than being accepted in a university in europe or australia... all american universities require the gre test, & i'm not sure if all canadian universities do, or some of them... also, since you're in the engineering/computer fields, i'm not sure if you're required to only take the GRE general test, or just a GRE special subject test, or both... in my case, for the social sciences, i was required only to take the general test of GRE... in order to know which one you're required to take, you have to check the websites of the departments within the universities you want to apply to & see their specific requirement for the GRE test... & also check what is the minimum grade they require for the GRE (generally aim yourself to have no less than 300 or 310 out of 340).... *3* wherever in the world you're applying, send to the professors who work in the line of research you want to do, within the departments that you aim to apply to... tell them about your qualifications & research goals that align with theirs, & if they'd be willing to work with you, & if there's a place to be matriculated as a student in their department... the chances that you get answered by professors are very extremely low (maybe 10 out of 100!!!), but don't give up, & don't feel less self-confident in yourself or anything, 'cause this is the way it goes with everyone too while sending to professors! but don't wait for professors to answer you in order to apply... whether you get answers or not just apply & do what you have to do... even though i emailed so so so many professors, i ended up being matriculated in a phd program in which i didn't contact its professors or emailed them beforehand... however, it is important before applying that you check the website of the department & see if it specifically requires you to contact one or more of its professors before applying to it, 'cause some departments require this or highly encourage it... *4* an important note is that you make sure from the website of the department that its lines of research, & at least one of its professors, are engaging in the line of research/dissertation topic that you plan to work on... all departments highly emphasize that they accept those applicants who show that their research goals align with the research interests of their faculty (& that is a part that you will have to show in your statement of purpose, besides talking about your qualifications & how you have ended up being interested in this academic field, & your career goals)... all in all, make sure that you read what the department is emphasizing & asking for in its website... don't give up searching mementobr... i've gone through your same experience, & kept on for years, but now as i made it & traveled & am now engaging in a new experience of learning/knowledge in a different environment half-way around planet earth... i'm finding that it's been worth it ☺️
  9. Hello everyone ? While looking into universities for the specialization i want to apply for, i found johns hopkins university (although really tough to get accepted in!!!) having it... but the i found that the department, after mentioning that it offers graduate assistantship & health insurance & such to all its matriculated students, it says that international students however are not eligible for federal financial aid! ? does that mean that an international student is not offered an assistantship, covering their tuition fees & provided with a living-expenses stipend? 'cause i thought that assistantship is not related to federal financial aid! or what do they mean by federal financial aid?!!
  10. I no longer prefer this, as I found that the research center I'm interested in, in Australia, don't have many professors interested in my topic.
  11. Thank you guys for your replies ? Well, most leases are 12-month, or at least 6-month periods. Anyway, I think it's better to go ahead & rent anyway, & if I'm not satisfied, I may change the place next year...
  12. Hello everyone. I'm from Egypt, & I'm moving into Carbondale, Illinois next August to start my PhD. I'd like to ask as an international student who can't come to Carbondale until early August, would it be preferable to me to stay temporarily in the first days with someone or in a hostel while I look over studio/1-bed apartments on reality to decide which to rent (so I don't get stuck in something that turns to be bad) OR is it better that I just finish things online before I come & just go ahead & rent online so that when I come I don't find that all the good deals have been taken already?

Hey everyone ? I would like to ask about the Sociology Department for PhD in Southern Illinois University, Carbondale? What is its ranking among sociology departments in the world & in America? What is its experience? How well does it stand? Does anyone know?
  15. Thank you so much @rising_star for your very helpful responses ?
  16. Thank you so much @rising_star for your very helpful advice ?You're truly helpful... According to Shanghai World Universities Ranking, in the field of "Sociology" neither of the two universities in the US nor Egypt are ranked. Do you know how I could know what's the rank of the Sociology Department of the US university I got accepted in compared to other programs in the field? And how can I know where its PhD graduates are employed? I'm sorry to ask these questions, it's just that I'm very new to this. I've never applied to any universities abroad (outside Egypt) before. I'm certainly interested in getting a tenure / academic faculty position in universities in the US, Canada, or anywhere in the world.
  17. I forgot to ask... Is it possible to defer an offer to another year after I already accepted it?
  18. Thank you all for your informative & helpful replies ? Well, yes, you make a good point @AP that I could apply for post-doc in that Australian institute. The thing that's not making me very enthusiastic about the US university I was accepted in, is that it's ranked lower (according to Shanghai world universities ranking) than my university in Egypt. But then again, gaining a new experience in a different country, & a different educational environment is perhaps more important than universities' ranking, don't you think? I'm not very enthusiastic about postponing my options for another year, as I may not get accepted into any university next year, & I'm not comfortable about spending all the US $ again for application fees. Besides, I'm already 32 yo, & I've postponed my PhD for 2 years already to find programs outside Egypt & take the required exams. What do you think? Thank you all for your advice...
  19. In my opinion, although the classic campus feel is indeed an important factor, because it may be a psychological happiness booster, I think in your place I will make use of the option that I have right now, which is the university you got accepted in. You're not sure whether you may be accepted in the classic-camp university next year, & even more than that, there MA program is unaccredited, so why bother study & tire yourself in the program, when at the end your certificate will not be recognized?!! There's a saying that says, holding a single bird in your hand is better than looking at ten birds up in the tree (which means that it's better that you make use of the opportunity you have right now, even if it's less attractive than an opportunity that you hope you may get in the future). And besides, I agree with fuzzylogician, you don't have to spend all your time in the library or lounge. You could ask officials in the classic-camp university if it's possible you could use their library & spaces, even if for a small fee, without being a student there. And anyway, this is just an MA - just two years at most, so the campus feel would not be a huge issue for this limited time of study. And you may apply for the other university for PhD - which consists of a much longer period.
  20. Hey everyone ? I'm an international student who has been accepted in a university in the US (PhD program) with a fellowship for the first year, & then an assistantship. I'm considering also application for a scholarship in an Australian university this July, which has a research center that I'm highly interested in. However, the results of Australian apps only appear in the start of the American academic year, whence I will probably have started my PhD in the American university. I'm asking if it would be possible, or bad to leave that American university (after I started there, with a fellowship) if I get accepted in the Australian program that I prefer? I highly need your advice, please, because I'm very confused. Have anyone passed through a similar experience before?
  21. Hello everyone,,, Now I got accepted with an assistantship offer into a university in America. Still, this university is not my favorite option. So, I'm thinking about also applying to the Japanese government scholarship (next May), & to an Australian university that has a research center which I'm highly interested in its research (next July). But since I can't guarantee that I'll get accepted into any of these two scholarships, & I don't want to waste a year of my life, so I will meanwhile go to the American university, & start to prepare to travel there. & the results of the two Japanese & Australian scholarships appear after the start of the academic year in America! However I I'd like your opinion about whether to go ahead & apply also to those two scholarships, especially two questions: 1) While starting my academic year in the American university, if I find out that I got accepted in the Japanese or Australian scholarship, is it possible to leave that university to go to the other one in either Japan or Australia? 2) Is it possible to do the visa procedures for traveling to Japan or Australia inside the US, although I'm Egyptian & not American?
  22. Well, as Warelin said, it's better we don't accept the offer until April 15th, so we could wait till the very end to see if our wait-listed situation hopefully turns into an acceptance, & not getting into trouble rejecting the other university after we chose to accept their offer! The problem is that our wait-listed position gets an acceptance AFTER April 15th, when we had to accept the other offer right before it! Hope everything goes well with us
  23. Thank you Warelin so much for your detailed explanation
  24. Hi everyone,,, I got accepted only in two of the universities I applied to, but got a waiting list in another two that I prefer. However, I know that I got April 15th as a deadline to accept or reject offers. So what if I accept the offer of one university, but then after April 15th (when perhaps someone rejects their offer in one of the universities I got a waiting list for), I get an offer from that university. What would I do? Is it possible for me to decline from the first university I accepted its offer before April 15th & accept the offer of my preferred one (the one that gave me an offer after April 15th, because I'm on a waiting list)? Another question is that, one of the two universities that accepted me, put me on a waiting list for its teaching assistantships (I wouldn't be able to afford studying without an assistantship). So should I accept the offer, & wait until April 15th when perhaps someone else would reject their offer of an assistantship? Is it possible that I accept the offer of the two universities (one I got an assistantship, & one I got wait-listed for an assistantship) so I wouldn't lose any of them before the deadline of April 15th? Oh my God, what a mess!!! I'm so depressed for not getting offered in my preferred university!
  25. Thank you Rising_star & Takeruk. Yeah, I know about similar groups in my field, but I hadn't got the idea of subscribing to their email lists to get PhD vacancies & such. Thanks for getting the idea into me
