  1. I caved and called my department. I was told I'll hear back either tomorrow or next week. Trying not to freak out because I've seen acceptances and waitlists, even though I am expecting a rejection. I've been pleasantly surprised once before when I expected something worse.
  2. I'm waiting to hear back from SDSU!

  5. It would probably be best to wait (I know it's hard... I waited 4 months for a decision) just so that you're absolutely certain because it sounds like it may be an impulse decision. Plus, if you end up getting more financial assistance from the "better" schools, but you know you're set on going to the other one, you can try using those offers to negotiate your financial aid package.

  7. I'm not an international student, but I would suggest waiting to hear back from your other programs so that you don't wonder about the "what if's" later on. Of course, if you know that your decision regarding where to attend would not change pending certain schools, then make your decision when you're sure of where you want to go. Good luck!
  8. So, they're a little complicated with their GPA. You will start fresh at UIUC and have a UIUC GPA, but you will still have a cumulative GPA which is combined with your other institution and it will also show you your transfer GPA. This does, however, make it easier when applying to graduate schools because if they ask for your last 60 hours, it'll just be your UIUC GPA. I'd also make the recommendation of talking to some of the clinical/community (they're lumped together for undergrad) faculty and seeing if they have any opportunities for undergrads. Stay persistent about this! They will notice. I was accepted into my first choice lab at the end of my first semester because I stayed persistent, despite not looking the best on paper.
  9. I would suggest looking into behavioral neuroscience programs and seeing if the research is a good match. Another way to explore your research interests would be to look for summer programs or consider taking a "gap year" to do a post-baccalaureate program. Certain programs have you do lab rotations for some time and then based on research fit, you would be placed into a certain lab. Feel free to PM me if you want to discuss anything further.

  11. I went to the local community college and only applied to three colleges when I transferred. Ultimately it came down to whether or not I wanted to spend the extra 10k to move and I chose not to. When registered for one of the other universities, I was set to be a double major in microbiology and neuroscience; however, since I decided not to spend the extra money to move, I ended up going to UIUC to study psychology - behavioral neuroscience. Psychology is a phenomenal program at UIUC and I fell in love with the department. The only drawback I experienced was that my primary research interests are not studied at UIUC, so I pursued my secondary interests and it has shaped my research interests for graduate school. If you can get the chance to go to Illinois, don't pass it up.
  12. @leecy77 I selected A. S.-C., P. O., J. M., and R. V.! But that's pretty cool. Hopefully good news for both of us will be delivered in the coming weeks.
  13. The letter said to maintain or improve the GPA at the time I was recommended for admission (3.15 cGPA). I anticipate completing the semester with a 3.13 cGPA. The official letter that came via post mail made no mention of this, but the letter attached to my graduate portal did and they're from the same person. Their website says that anything via post mail is the official communication from the graduate school. I feel like I shouldn't worry about it because it's such a small change, but was wondering if anyone had input.
  14. Depending on what your research interests are, you could still find opportunities at Illinois. The neuroscience labs might be a better option for going into clinical psychology if you can't get into any of the clinical psychology labs as an undergraduate; however, the important thing is that you have research experience and understand research methods. Independent research with a thesis will give you an advantage over quite a few applicants, especially if you happen to get your thesis published under a graduate student's manuscript. Feel free to PM me with any questions! I'm about to graduate from Illinois.
  15. @leecy77 Nice! Do you mind sharing the initials of you POI(s) for Northwestern? I can PM you if you want to compare notes/maintain privacy! Also, Ohio said they should have decisions by mid-April. I'm not sure about IUPUI though.
  16. Most apartments with all utilities and nice amenities included are closer to $900-1000/mo if you want to live in a safe neighborhood and relatively close to campus. I'd suggest looking into subleased apartments. Otherwise, a general suggestion would be that Urbana seems to be cheaper because most of the nightlife is in Champaign. Obviously, the closer you live to campus, the more expensive rent will be. Good luck!

  18. The graduate school requires a 2.75+ UGPA while the department requires a 3.0+ UGPA and I applied with a 3.15, but am currently at a 3.16. Thank you!
  19. For those of you getting funded offers, is the funding listed on award letters or are you notified separately? Thanks!

  21. I'm waiting to hear from one grad program, three post-baccalaureate programs, and one department about funding. I'm also trying not to stress out about whether a school would rescind their offer of admission for a slight drop in GPA (I'm talking 0.02-0.03) because they said I have to maintain my cumulative GPA or increase it.
  22. I got my acceptance letter from a graduate school and it says I need to maintain or improve my GPA from the time I applied, but I'm wondering if they would actually rescind the offer of admission for a slight drop (0.02-0.03) in GPA. Any thoughts? Thanks!
