  1. If there is anyone attending UBC (SLP or Audiology), can I confirm that their annual fee is $1,632.62 *3 = $4897.86, or thereabouts? (http://www.calendar.ubc.ca/vancouver/index.cfm?tree=14,266,773,1450#18012) Thanks!
  2. What about UBC? Is it $4896 per year and therefore $9792 for 2 years? Any existing UBC student here who can tell us more? http://www.calendar.ubc.ca/vancouver/index.cfm?tree=14,266,773,1450#18012
  3. You have a positive attitude -- I am sure good things will come your way!
  4. Welcome. Hope we all get lucky this year!
  5. I will be very brief. Not getting admitted to graduate school is a silly reason to wish for death. The academic job market is very bleak at the moment, particularly for humanities/social sciences PhDs. So maybe this is a silver lining for you. But if you are truly passionate about doing research and pursuing academia, supposing you still do not get in this year, why not ask the departments which areas of the application you can improve on, so that you can better your chances next time? Also, if you are applying for a PhD program time, why not apply for an MA next time? best wishes.
  6. I was just going to create a thread with the same title, and you had me beat. Unfortunately, I do not have any insights to share on the specific question you asked, because Western is the only (English-language) audiology program I did not apply for. I applied to UBC and Dalhousie. No movement on the UBC application so far. For Dalhousie, I received an email the last week of January saying that my application is complete and they will send out decisions in March-April.
  7. Yes, only those two schools for this round. There are only three Canadian universities offering the program I want to pursue (Audiology) in English, the third being Western. However, they seem to have a complicated application process, so I didn't apply this time. Yes, let's keep in touch!
  8. I have a lot in common with you. I also already have a PhD degree (from US) and postdoc experiences. Like you, I am also an immigrant to Canada (I'm a PR). However, the academic job market in Canada in my area seems non-existent, and I applied to two clinical programs this year (UBC and Dalhousie). There are only 3 universities in Canada that offer this program in English. Hope things turn out all right for both of us.
  9. An unfunded PhD program is a bad idea, and an unfunded PhD program in HISTORY is many times worse. Do not even think about it, unless you have external funding or have lots of money.
  10. Not to scare you or the thread-starter further, but just to drive my point home, I am attaching a screenshot from Academic Jobs Wiki (a forum for academic job seekers). The posting happens to be for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in historical/socio-linguistics. And the university happens to be UC Berkeley. According to the info provided by some applicant(s) for that position, there were 188 applicants for this position. 15 were shortlisted, and only 1 will get the job. And there is no guarantee that this lucky person will, in 5-6 years time achieve the Holy Grail of "tenure". If s/he does not, well, I don't know what they will do. Perhaps going back to school to study a more useful degree like what I am doing?? Or becoming a sessional instructor? (I know someone in this situation, and s/he graduated from a top-notch linguistics program in the US), or selling things online (again, I know a linguistics PhD in this situation).
  11. Hi, I will message you the name of my school and my area. If it is something you feel passionate about, by all means pursue it. Just make sure that you have excellent research output (that means three things: publications, publications, and publications). Otherwise, it would be impossible to get an academic position on today's job market. best wishes
