I set my phone to give me push notifications for my .edu email address — although since I'm not in school anymore, I don't use that for anything other than PhD stuff. It's been a good way to stop myself from relentlessly checking.

im getting push notifications from my .edu email too, but my brain just refuses to be rational at this time of the year (see also: reading one's horoscope), so i'll probably still be refreshing my email every ten minutes anyway.

Even though I have all of the email addresses for the schools I applied to marked so they won’t go to my spam folder, I still end up checking my normal inbox and also my spam folder, several times an hour. Even though I’m not expecting to be notified for a week or two from my schools! Just forever waiting for That Email!

I've never related to a post more in my life.

Just some notes from my personal experience with this kind of thing...

- Don’t assume they will contact you with a “.edu” email: for my MA, I was first contacted by a prof who prefers to use their gmail.

- Don’t assume you’ll be getting a call from a number with an area code matching that of the university/ies to which you’ve applied: this year, a UCSC prof. contacted me using their cell (NY number).

- Don’t assume you’re out because you aren’t contacted at the same time as others: this is a given. It is a long process, and some of you will receive acceptances as late as April 24th. I was just speaking with a prof. who claimed that they consistently send 2 or 3 acceptance letters as late as April.

I just wanted to remind everyone that you cannot control what happens next, you cannot predict based on data you’ve found here or elsewhere (its useful, and sometimes necessary to help ameliorate the angst of applying for just about anything in academia). Oh, and (believe it or not) I have a friend who started PhD recently who was notified unofficially in person at their local socialist group meeting, which a professor happened to take part in. :P And another who was called back after the 25th two years back!

And for those of you who are really down about their apps (way too early for that, but I definitely  understand): there are still places accepting apps, especially for MA programs, and it is possible to get a terminal MA funded!

good luck, all!

so like... who else is on the verge of a heart attack at all times?

between acceptances and rogue sinuses rendering it impossible to breathe through my nose (I can't take decongestants) I'm not having any fun lately

This is out of nowhere, but I just realized I haven't heard anyone else on here talk about WSU- did anyone else apply there this year? I know last year's board seemed to have at least a couple applicants there.

I didn't think about the emails going to spam! My schools don't notify until about the same time, but I'll have to give my spam a glance every once in a while. Thanks for this tip! :)

I had the worst fake out this morning after receiving some solicitation email from Princeton Review with a subject line that included the words "Graduate school." My most anger-driven unsubscribe on record.

oof. fastest unsubscribe in the west.

I was informed that I am on a short waitlist at Wisconsin-Madison this morning. Does anyone have any knowledge or experience about their waitlist? As in, does it move?

In recent years, Wisconsin's waitlist has moved a fair amount. A few years ago, they offered 15 or so spots and only 3 people accepted. I think part of it was due to Scott Walker and the changes of tenure in Wisconsin which caused a lot of professors to flee ship.

Thank you for the info!! I’d heard about that from my advisor and it made me a bit nervous to apply. However, I talked to a couple of current graduate students and they seemed to be doing well.

Achtung !! Does that Duke interview belong to anyone here? Wondering if it was a POI/DGS email since it appears to have arrived after what are called "business hours" ???

Posted (edited)

also, it is for English (i don't know if they've historically done interviews?) or Literature?

edit: i know it says it's for English, but i'm curious if they're starting to do interviews now when it doesn't seem like they appeared to in previous years or perhaps was it mislabeled...

One of my professors who recently graduated from there and an assistant professor who completed her postdoc there recently also warned me against applying last year. I didn't notice any causes of concerns though.

From the information I've gathered, most people who post results don't have an account. I'd also like to add a note here that we might not know exactly when the user received the e-mail because it may not be the same time they posted the result.

(Though, I think I posted my results fairly quickly during my cycle except when I was teaching.)

I applied to WSU -- they have the digital humanities component I long for.
