Anyone hereĀ a Victorian/19th C British specialist? It seems that this year's acceptances have so far consistently been for other areas of specialization other than Victorian/19th C British. I'm wondering if last year was a big year for this particular area, and there just isn't much space for specialists working in this period this application season as a result. Granted, people might not be reporting their areas on the results page, but I'm curious to know if anyone else has noticed that.

i'm a Romanticist/Victorianist hybrid depending on the programme i applied to but i agree there doesn't seem to be too many of us around this year, at least as far as the forum goes! maybe everyone is too busy channeling the internal shadow & seclusion of the era?!

I am and Iā€™ve noticed the same thing!

I desperately want to hear back from my last few schools so I can start making decisions already. I feel like there's just a huge number of impending life choicesĀ waiting to crash down on my shoulders. Anxiety does not sleep and, apparently, neither do I.

Hope everyone's doing okay and managing the stress! We'll get through this one way or another. Fingers and toes crossed for each and every one of you!

Ugh i feel you. Imagine not having a singleĀ acceptance yet.Ā

Hey guys, I just saw a rejection pop up for Columbia. Did everyone else (who did not get accepted) get a rejection? I don't have anything in my email or portal yet.Ā

Nothing yet. This is the 3rd or 4th place that has allegedly sent out some rejections and I havenā€™t received anything so I donā€™t know what to think anymore. There is no reason why rejections would not be sent en-masse.Ā

Does Columbia not also do as Chicago does and refer some of their applicants to their MA program? Perhaps that's why rejections are staggered.

Edit: In which case, it's also time for this meme to return--

Ugh totally true! I did, though, ask them not to consider me for the MA, if I remember correctly.Ā

I asked them to consider me and actually sent in a separate application for Columbiaā€™s MA program. Iā€™m wondering if theyā€™ll offer me a spot in that if I donā€™t make it off the PhD waitlist.Ā

Anyone 20-21st Century American and British?

i feel like this is a competitive concentration to choose. Idk if schools have been taking people with this researchĀ focus or not this year, anyone else know?

i think my parents r in disbelief that I havenā€™t gotten in anywhere yet, but Iā€™m totally believing it lmao itā€™s just sad

I'm 20th century American Lit. I'd imagine it being a more competitive concentration but I'm not sure either way. Might just be my own bias for it ha

Just got a call from a Utah number.... I didn't apply anywhere there (are there even schools there? ?Ā ) And yet here I am freaking out over the fact that the call cut out before they said why they called...Ā

Let's get these last few schools in please so I can move on.

C20/21 women's life-writing here. It does seem like a rather crowded concentration, though I suppose that's partly due to the diversity of everyone's areas of interest -- not to mention the overlaps that occurĀ more frequently between this period and other cognate disciplines (film/cinema studies, visual culture, theory/philosophy etc), which means that there'll likely be a larger applicant pool for our concentration.
(Of course, this bodes well for neither of us, so I'm preparing to be shut-out this cycle...)Ā

I jump every time my phone rings, beeps, dings, or vibrates. I sleep with my phone under the pillow. Even my computerā€™s sleep mode is turned off.

Met a friend for lunch yesterday. He said I look ā€œweathered.ā€Ā

ā€œWeatheredā€ ????

I cried on the phone the other day with an anthem blue cross rep because the companyĀ kept calling me with some health insurance offer, every single day, from various area codes, including ones in Pennsylvania and Texas. It was torturous.

I've answered all these wrong number phone calls lately because I don't know if a POI might be calling from their personal cell! Alas, no phone calls for me.Ā

Me! Also, I feel thatĀ last lineĀ so much... So far my only acceptance is a fairly localĀ acceptance, and it is by no means a bad program, but it definitely wasnā€™t my top choice either.Ā

I can't stand the health insurance calls...Calling from all the states in which I applied to programs!

Not going to lie,Ā one of the benefits of being an international applicant for me is never having to go through that, because as expensive as it is to travel to United States, I would die ifĀ every phone callĀ could potentially be from a universityĀ I applied to.Ā ?

a Philadelphia area code called me today and i nearly fell off the elliptical because i thought it might be penn somehow. answered huffing and puffing and it was a job i applied to saying they wanted someone sooner than may. either way it was embarrassing.

20th and 21st century Americanist on my end, specializing in poetry and queer theory. Not sure about the competitiveness surrounding poetry but I imagine queer theory being very packed. Doing ok for myself though so far, 1 acceptance and 1 waitlist.

Hoping you get in somewhere on your end, fingers (and every possible appendage) crossed

Ngl I'm wishing this cycle would come to a close. My heart's basically set on matriculating to my one acceptance (and I'm already life planning just to distract myself from my e-mail lol. I haven't even gotten any link to register yet and I'm already looking at graduate housing options and beginning to figure out what I can and can't do with my fellowship). I just want to be free from this limbo state so life can move forward and I don't have to obsess over e-mail and my phone (and to finally get some real sleep).
