Just dropping in to say all of my applications are now 100% complete! I intended to apply to 9 or 10 but ended up applying to 14 because I had the time to write a few more personal statements. I'll be staying off of TGC for the next couple of months – I want to practice thinking about things other than "will I/won't I get in" – but I'll check in come February. My fingers are crossed for all of you!!!

Good luck! I know you've worked hard. I also applied to 14. Fingers remain crossed, as you said!

If I'm reapplying to a place where I was waitlisted last year, is it a good idea to mention the waitlist situation in my SOP?

@Warelin

I'm not sure if it would be beneficial to mention waitlists from previous years. I think the admissions committee changes each year and each one will look for different things to fill in a cohort. I also think there are far more valuable things you can talk about in such a small word count.

I have three applications with early January deadlines, and 1 of my letter writers still has to submit to these schools. I am hoping for the best with this one. I sort of wish it was done already before the holiday season.

Applied to my 12th school last night and right before uploading the same CV I’ve been using for the previous 11 apps, I realised that for one of my languages I wrote: ‘Advanced reading proficiency, intermediate reading/writing proficiency’ when I had meant ‘speaking/writing’... ?

I had one letter writer who didn’t submit letters until nearly a week after several deadlines and it didn’t end up making a difference. I contacted the schools and they explained that professors being a bit late is not unusual and they don’t hold it against the applicant (within reason). Try not to stress about it too much!

Absolutely nothing to worry about. I've learned that professors procrastinate even more than we do, and adcomms, being professors themselves, don't hold that against their colleagues. One subtle way to remind them (if the deadline is coming too close for comfort) is just to write to them about anything. They'll get the hint.

Yup - I noticed a fairly serious typo (as in, it significantly changed the content of the sentence) in my PS three schools in and had to email them corrected versions. If you think it's serious enough to warrant that, go for it - there's usually an email on the department website for this kind of stuff, if not an "document update" option in the portal itself. But again I've seen worse typos on well-established scholars' CVs so I doubt people will hold it against you, however confused they may be.

I noticed a missed call from an unknown number and hastened to look up the area code, because the irrational side of my brain told me that it might, just might, have been a grad program.

And so it begins...

I was wavering on whether to apply to a Jan 1 school and I'm sure part of me is doing it to delay the anxiety that comes with the waiting phase

Same... I keep wanting to get it over with but at the same time, as long as I keep working on apps, I don’t feel like I’m in the waiting phase yet..

For what it's worth, Washington University in St. Louis has a January deadline but has traditionally been on the first schools to accept students. In some cases, applying to different places might mean less waiting as long as you're interested in all schools you're applying to.

WashU, Emory, Notre Dame and Duke have also traditionally paid for flights and accommodations for accepted and/or final round candidates.

I literally just came back on the forum to search for projected acceptance dates, haha. Thanks for feeding into my desire to lengthen the process on one hand, and shorten it on the other. I'll check out WashU!

On that note... is there a thread somewhere with a list of the notification dates from previous cycles? I swear I’ve seen one but I haven’t been able to search it up.

maybe there's a thread...? But if you know the specific school/program you're looking for, the result page (https://www.thegradcafe.com/survey/) has a search function.

Does anyone know whether you should apply to Boston U's PhD and MA programs if you aren't coming in with an MA?

If you want to attend the phD program, you only need to apply to the phD program. According to their website:

"Students who will have earned a BA by September 2019 and who wish to apply for the PhD program in English should check the Post-Bachelors PhD option on the application form. Students admitted under this option must complete all of the requirements for the MA before moving on to the PhD. Permission to continue in the PhD program is conditional on the timely completion of all MA requirements at a satisfactory scholarly level."

Also: "Please note that successful completion of requirements in the first year earns each Ph.D. student an M.A. degree as a matter of course."

I hope this helps!

Naive question: Do most English/humanities PhD programs conduct interviews after the application deadline(s)? I've been under the impression that the writing sample is in lieu of an in-person interview. Can someone help clarify? Thanks!

My friend, who is now at UC Davis, had a Skype interview with the Comp Lit dept at U Penn. I believe she had been waitlisted but didn't get a place there.

So this might be a bit of wishful thinking, but do we know if UChicago does interviews for everyone they admit? Or does it also have a history of accepting some without interview?

I'm fairly certain that everyone is interviewed. At least, everyone admitted last year was interviewed.

So the other night I had a dream that I was accepted to the PhD program at UC Davis, a school I did not even apply to in real life. But at least it was an acceptance! (Seriously, the next three months are just gonna be brutal...)

I'm glad I'm not the only one dreaming about them. Last week I dreamed that a school wanted to fly me up to talk about my application, then they sat me down and took turns roasting my app materials before sending me home. Good times haha

Does anyone feel like their research interests have shifted since beginning the application process? Or perhaps not shifted, but been refined/clarified a bit? I’m trying to finish up my last three applications for January and I’m realising that one of the schools is actually a pretty poor fit, even though according to my notes I initially had some POIs picked out.

Seriously debating if I should go ahead and apply anyway, since my profs have all sent in recommendations... but on the other hand, it’s $120...
