Biopsychosocialyzing Posted January 22, 2021 Posted January 22, 2021 BTW TC Columbia Counseling PhD called me and let me know that all interviews have been extended and no more interviews will be send out. Honestly not too crazy sad about it as I was fully expecting this but still a bummer. Also don’t appreciate that they were one of the only schools that didn’t waive the GRE.. oh well. JoePianist 1

This is my first time going through the process and as I see people on their second, third, and fourth tries become more discouraged I can't help but feel saddened and slightly angry. This entire process needs to be completely scrapped and reevaluated. People with years and years of experience are rejected because there are only 3-10 spots per school? We can either be in $200k+ debt for the rest of our lives or apply once every year until hopefully we get a shot? The world needs more psychologists, and everyone here has the knowledge, passion, and drive to be one. This process effectively discourages applicants from diverse backgrounds, promotes hyper-competitiveness, and drives away perfectly qualified (and over-qualified) candidates. I hope someone who has any influence has been watching these forums this cycle. I'm out of things to say, and these programs are out of excuses. 100000% completely agree. I’m nervous to apply next year because I feel like there are people applying with 5+ pubs, 10+poster presentations, 4.0 GPA, etc etc. Do programs not know that not everyone has a pipeline to do research equally at their universities? And that finding a CRC/RA job is almost impossible without the right connections? It absolutely disadvantages diverse applicants. For a field that praises itself to be inclusive, programs have a long way to go in terms of actual inclusiveness. It’s insane how competitive it is. People shouldn’t have to apply 3+ times to get into a program. It also really sucks to know that the people most passionate about being psychologists or doing research in a specific area get denied spots in labs. Aggggh sorry rant over. expensiveswimmer Posted January 22, 2021 Posted January 22, 2021 It’s so hard to not be discouraged. I keep telling myself that this year was different than all other years, but everyone I know who has had my current position has at least gotten in somewhere. It just feels bad!! We’ve all worked extremely hard (and through a pandemic no less) and to be met with these results feels like a slap in the face. CoffeeErryday, decafplease, ResilientQueen and 8 others 8 3

I agree about not waiving the GRE, and in an info session they basically said they’d hardly be looking at it since it’s a weird year, so idk why they even required it? But I wish they would just send out rejection emails so we would know! Sad knowing the results but grateful for your post so i’m not stuck hoping in the dark.

I think it's a new era for this process in general; I can't foresee it getting *less* competitive given the economy, GRE situation, etc. I would say networking and collaborating on projects is going to be even more important than ever, as well as SOP's that are incredibly compelling and hopefully hold more weight. I'm a first gen non trad student (in a lot of ways) and most of the schools I got an invite to had diversity statements. ALL programs should include a diversity statement in addition to SOP in my opinion. Take the extra 5 minutes reading time to really get to know these students and tell a compelling story. Micsmith1814 Posted January 22, 2021 Posted January 22, 2021 I saw a post on the results page that Fordham counseling has sent out the general rejection email but I haven't heard anything. Does anyone have more information on this?
decafplease Posted January 22, 2021 Posted January 22, 2021 Just wanted to hop on here and say that I really appreciate this forum. Most people seem really supportive (and aren't trolls). I know this year is especially difficult. I actually applied about 5 years ago, received 2 interviews, but no offers. I am once again applying because I've had some time to explore and realize this is likely my path, but this year has been absolutely insane - so kudos to us for trying, even if it doesn't work out. There's a great deal of luck involved it seems, so we might as well throw all the anxiety to the curb (easier said than done) and let the chips fall where they may. I hope you find peace and relaxation this weekend. rainbow56, happycola23, PsychApplicant2 and 6 others 9

Copingwithcarbs Posted January 22, 2021 Posted January 22, 2021 Hi! Just wanted to let everyone know who applied to University of North Dakota that interview day will most likely be February 12th and that invites will therefore most likely go out by January 29th. This is all tentative information that I received from a grad student there that I've been in contact with. Good luck!! MyAmygdalaDoesn'tLikeThis and txpsychology 2

I had a professor promise to right my letter, to then legit ghost me at the last minute. I had to find a reference on such short notice (and during finals which is why I gather I didn't hear back from other professors) and only one got back to me but they weren't academic either, although related to the field. I'm hoping things like this are factored, but with everything being super competitive, it's hard to say. There are many possible scenarios. Honestly I was more concerned about my PI being okay than anything. I've been severely sick before and the last thing I could spend my limited energy on was a letter. My last min letter writer ended up working out and can say lots of things and say it well, given my research and clinical experience with them. Of course there is always that uncertainty we can't help but feel when it is a nonacademic writer. Wishing you the best of luck. I am sorry you're dealing with a similar circumstance. YONO Posted January 23, 2021 Posted January 23, 2021 Ugh I just updated most of my schools to rejected / presumed rejected because 1) I'm being a pessimistic lil biotch, and 2) they probably are rejections at this point! I applied 2 years ago and got interviews at 2 top-30 programs and now I can't get any interviews and my CV is way better??? I guess I will just never be a psychologist and will have to start a commune somewhere in the caribbean where we subside off the land just get drunk on the beach every day. Let me know if you want to join! I'm sorry, I know how you feel. I'm waiting on rejections as well. But keep in mind that the acceptance rate is about 1%, and that was in 2019. So many more people applied this year, and there are fewer spots because of less funding. I bet it'll be easier next year! And who knows, maybe you'll find a job with a nice in to one of your ideal schools! My point is, while it's fine to be disappointed and pessimistic (goodness knows I am), let's remember that rejections are not personal, and they don't dictate who we are or what we're capable of. It just means that there are 4 spots for 800 applicants. PsychBear92 1
