If you don't mind. Thank you! I started my phd Fall 2020 so this is my second application to the psychology committee under Motor Systems and Performance. Applied with one 1st author pub, two submitted, and ~5 conference presentations. I've been somewhat successful in past internal funding competitions, but this is my first major external scholarship. Happy to add anything else here, not sure what is helpful! ssethi25, MarleyBarley and GHbwoy 3
BioFish Posted April 27, 2021 Posted April 27, 2021 I was also notified by the university ahead of NSERC that I was successful, but I don't think that means if you haven't heard from your institution, you didn't get an award - especially at large universities. This was my second and last time to apply. My first application was ranked very low and this year, I was ranked very high (goes to show how dynamic the process is year to year). I just remember how discouraging everyone was because I didn't have any publications and wanted to let those in the same boat know that you don't have to have publications to get NSERC! Keep trying and good luck!!!!! user907438, acidred, ssethi25 and 3 others 6

I had an unusual start to my PhD and took longer than normal to start publishing so I'm interested in the profiles of successful applicants who had low/no publications. Could you comment on how you demonstrated research potential with that area 'lacking'?
ssethi25 Posted April 27, 2021 Posted April 27, 2021 (edited) I was recently notified by my school that my application was successful. No word about rank or anything else though. Edited April 27, 2021 by ssethi25 MarleyBarley and Darshana Upadhyay 2
ParisMashouri Posted April 27, 2021 Posted April 27, 2021 I haven't heard back yet but I'm just wondering if anyone knows how PGSD differs from CGSD in terms of breakdown of payment? Our schools tops our stipend up with $5000 for PGSD, but I don't know what their approach is for CGSD?
fhjdsag Posted April 27, 2021 Posted April 27, 2021 (edited) I also got notice from my school that I got NSERC. What a mess to not have a centralized system. EDIT: I should also mention I got rejected for the provincial competition (Ontario Graduate Scholarship) which is supposedly less competitive. Just shows how subjective these awards are. Albd Posted April 27, 2021 Posted April 27, 2021 I tried to login to the extranet page and I was greeted with a new page where I had to accept a confidentiality agreement, then it went back to an error page. So I feel like we could be hearing sooner than the 30th, although its not based on anything other than this "new" page. acidred 1
abdelrahmanayad Posted April 27, 2021 Posted April 27, 2021 Anyone got NSERC and heard back from McGill?
MarleyBarley Posted April 27, 2021 Author Posted April 27, 2021 Universite Laval and I havent heard anything yet...
Darshana Upadhyay Posted April 27, 2021 Posted April 27, 2021 Anyone from Dalhousie University heard back from institute/department?

Our schools tops our stipend up with $5000 for PGSD, but I don't know what their approach is for CGSD? AFAIK from friends who have previously held NSERC the payments are across the 3 semesters (i.e. 21,000 /3 semesters = 7,000/semester - or $35,000/3 in the case of CGS-D). I think tops ups would be specific to the institution, but the $5,000 you mentioned seems to be close to what I have heard from others at different schools across the country. Disclaimer: this is all word of mouth so YMMV Edited April 27, 2021 by Crawn

Thanks for confirming that I didn't get it since I'm from uOttawa too and didn't received anything. It really sucks how all of this works.

According to my department's grad chair, it's the centralized graduate studies office that gets the list from NSERC and it was them who notified me about my successful application. If the individual departments want to know who got the awards, they would have to contact the centralized graduate office. This is for my school at least.

Yeah for us at Dal that is FGS(Faculty of Graduate Studies) and they have been fairly tight lipped with another award the Killiam, so I can't imagine them spilling the beans to us early.

I can't imagine a world where the grad secretary in my department would go out of their way to email us our results early. I would be surprised if SGS did that too. So I'm trying to remain hopeful!
