J0_0 Posted March 15, 2013 Posted March 15, 2013 From your post it looks like you have preference for U of T. I will say hold on for a couple of days till you hear from U of T. Although it’s good to let the admission committee know as soon as you make up your mind, you don’t have to stampede yourself into making any decision and later regret. The admission committee knows that people apply to multiple schools and making a decision to accept/reject an offer can take a couple of days. Thanks for the advice
student2668 Posted March 15, 2013 Posted March 15, 2013 Anyone hear from university of calgary??? I was just accepted into the MSW 2 year program at the University of Calgary. I have until March 28th to decide, however I accepted the offer today. AccioMSW 1
nugget Posted March 15, 2013 Posted March 15, 2013 Congrats to you, Student2668! Must to be great feeling to get accepted into your first choice. I must admit, one thing I like about this forum is that I can wait to hear when others get their responses then check out my own account status when the 2 years start to hear back. Somehow it keeps me less anxious by not logging into my accounts every few days just to find out if something has been changed. If I happen to get an early response (which I doubt would happen), they would mail it out by snail mail anyway so there is no risk of missing out on important news. I was just accepted into the MSW 2 year program at the University of Calgary. I have until March 28th to decide, however I accepted the offer today.
Must_Love_Dogs_88 Posted March 15, 2013 Posted March 15, 2013 Don't be discouraged!! Each school looks for something different. Just because you are waitlisted at one school doesn't mean you will be at another! Thanks DreamingMSW I guess that is true! Can I just say that this forum is SO refreshing, everyone is so positive and encouraging. I applied to med school the past couple of years, and let me tell you.... those forums are AWFUL! people are so competitive and cut-throat!! Just so nice to see everyone supporting each other, makes me realize why I chose this field
k.jo Posted March 15, 2013 Posted March 15, 2013 Congrats! I was also accepted into the 2 year at Calgary last night. I am extremely excited, but also unsure how to proceed because the deadline for responding is so soon! How can I make this decision without knowing the verdict of other schools like UofT and Laurier? Do you suggest accepting and then perhaps declining later? Should I call the other schools? I was just accepted into the MSW 2 year program at the University of Calgary. I have until March 28th to decide, however I accepted the offer today. MSW13 1
cmarie_ Posted March 15, 2013 Posted March 15, 2013 For everyone waiting on York, I was accepted into the Advanced Standing MSW today, so decisions have started coming out. I logged into MyFile (like I do every day, sometimes up to 10 times lol), and under Decision it says Admitted. I've accepted the offer since this is the only school I applied to. I just wanted to let those know who applied to York to check MyFile! Best of luck! MSW13 1

I enjoy their program, the professors I have had are challenging but fair. Congrats! I was also accepted into the 2 year at Calgary last night. You all make this so real! Edited March 15, 2013 by Kae Kae
happy888 Posted March 15, 2013 Posted March 15, 2013 Congratulations to everyone that has been accepted thus far! I called York's office this morning and was advised that offers for the 2-year MSW will start going out at the end of this month. I was surprised since it sounds like York was unorganized the previous years, but I guess they fixed the issues! Good luck to everyone who is still waiting. MidnightRose 1
scotto123 Posted March 15, 2013 Posted March 15, 2013 Well "my file" hasn't changed so I'm assuming I got rejected. Congrats on those who got accepted!!
MSW13 Posted March 15, 2013 Posted March 15, 2013 Kae Kae, since you have already taken masters level social work classes, perhaps you can help me. I'm trying to get an idea of how much writing is involved in a typical course. I've read a lot about how much reading you have to do but not so much about the written work. How long is a typical essay and how many do you have to complete in a typical class? I'm used to writing papers most often anywhere between 5-8pgs with the occassional 10-12 pager. I'm not sure of what to expect! I understand that the workload will be different, I'm just trying to wrap my head around 'how different'! Any help you or anyone else can offer would be much appreciated!
MSW13 Posted March 15, 2013 Posted March 15, 2013 Scotto, why dont you give them a call and find out? I would not assume rejection just yet--maybe you are on yet another waitlist?? Well "my file" hasn't changed so I'm assuming I got rejected. Congrats on those who got accepted!!
Thumper86 Posted March 15, 2013 Posted March 15, 2013 MSW13 I'm currently completing my MSW at Laurier and I've taken 6 courses thus far. The average number of essays is two per course (8-10 pages for a midterm paper and 15-20 pgs excluding references for a final paper). Many courses also have many smaller reflection papers (1-3 pages). The longest paper I've written so far was 63 pages (21 the actual essay and 42 transcription of therapy session and references). I find the reading and assignment load reasonable but I have only taken one course per term for the last 3 terms so I bet a full course load will be much more challenging. For the writing, there were only like 3 or 4 omponents that contributed to the entire grade so for one class it was 15%-participation, 30%-presentation (leading the 3 hour class),15%-small paper (6-8 pages) and 50%-final paper 15-20pages. It seems like there is always one major paper that is like 15-25 pages long. So I guess if you're taking a full course load you would have 4 long papers in a term. What the students told me was to mix the required courses with the electives becuase electives are less demanding. But I was asking for the 2 year program, I think in your 1 year program it may be differnt. I don't think they are concerned with doing a lot of assignment work. What I hate is the presentations, they have high expectations for those and they are long!!! For the long papers I have had to do a proposal first telling them what I was going to write about and they gave feedback, I found this very helpful. Two of the courses required reflextion jounals on the readings instead of the minor paper. I hate these, they are so time consuming but they are due in batches. If you keep up with them throughout the term, they are ok. Hope this helps!

Thumper86 Posted March 15, 2013 Posted March 15, 2013 The program is great! Is there anything in particular you'd like to know? I commute from Toronto. Hey Thumper86, how is the program at Laurier? Do you live in the city or communte?
MSW13 Posted March 15, 2013 Posted March 15, 2013 Thumper and Kae Kae, thank you so much for your awesome responses! This is exactly the type of information I was hoping for. In the 1yr program at U of T, you start your practicum right in september for 3days/wk. A full courseload is 4 course plus practicum. I'm not sure how I will manage that type of essay work and still be able to sleep most nights! Are these mostly research essays? Kae Kae, are presentations done individually or in groups? If it is on your own, yikes! I realize that this may not be the right forum for these questions but hopefully others are benefiting from your very helpful answers as well! Jax14 Posted March 15, 2013 Posted March 15, 2013 Still nothing for me from Ryerson, which is the last school I have left to hear from. Since acceptances were sent out, I'm guessing I didn't get accepted. Time to move on to Plan B!
MSW13 Posted March 15, 2013 Posted March 15, 2013 When did acceptances start going out? They send acceptances by mail, right? Last year I learned about my rejection from Ryerson but it was by email, not snail mail. I'm not sure if that is the way they always do it but if you haven't been formally rejected, dont throw in the towel just yet. Still nothing for me from Ryerson, which is the last school I have left to hear from. Since acceptances were sent out, I'm guessing I didn't get accepted. Time to move on to Plan B!
Thumper86 Posted March 15, 2013 Posted March 15, 2013 Yes, most of my papers had a large research component. None of mine were strictly research papers though, they all had an application section (e.g. research a psychological theory and a sociological theory and present them. Then apply these theories to a case and present a formulation based on these theories). Thumper and Kae Kae, thank you so much for your awesome responses! Thumper86 Posted March 16, 2013 Posted March 16, 2013 If you're coming from downtown Toronto it takes about an hour and a half to get to the Kitchener campus. Hey Thumper! Sorry if this question might have been asked already but I was wondering how long the commute is from Toronto to Laurier?
cmarie_ Posted March 16, 2013 Posted March 16, 2013 Well "my file" hasn't changed so I'm assuming I got rejected. Congrats on those who got accepted!! My last name starts with A, maybe it's an alphabetical thing? I also have a friend who applied to the 1 year at York and her MyFile hasn't changed either. Don't give up hope! Best of luck!
