I'm glad they sent word about funding - some of the previous places have sent out acceptances and then funding much later. For example, what kind of questions will they ask (mostly research interest questions? Questions about my honors thesis or other academic achievements? Etc.)? How familiar should I be with the interviewer's work if they aren't in my field? What kind of questions about the program do they generally expect? (Do people mostly inquire about funding or is there other insightful questions into the program that I should consider?) Will they ask about other programs to which I've applied? How do you handle any questions hinting at how your rank their program to others? Any other advice is gratefully received! This is my first graduate school interview, so the more insight you all have the better. Thank you! Disclaimer: this is what I did for my only interview thus far (OSU), so your mileage may vary. First, do you know who you're interviewing with? And was there any guidance provided when they initially contacted you? My interview was with my POI who was very casual about the whole thing. In their outreach email they mentioned wanting to chat about my background and about the program in general. I know that other OSU interviews were more intense than this and covered applicants' research interests and background in much more detail than mine did. This is the process that I followed to prepare: -Re-read my SOP and made a note of the things that I wanted to highlight over the phone that may not have been covered in enough detail in my application. -Researched (ahem, internet stalked) my interviewer. I read their 3 most recent publications and took a few notes on each. I skimmed 2 of their older pubs to get a sense of how their interests have changed over time. -Practiced an "elevator pitch" for why I would be a good fit with the department (what drew me to the department in the first place, what my value-add would be in terms of my prior work/educational experience, how my research interests meshed with department etc.). I already had a clear idea of my research question(s) and potential methodologies so I didn't prep those, but it certainly couldn't hurt to do so. -Prepared a few questions about timeline, departmental procedures, atmosphere at the university, etc. My interviewer talked about funding in a lot more detail than I expected, so I asked a lot of followup questions. The main other thing that I asked was for them to talk about what they thought were grad students' most favorite and least favorite aspects of the program. These are very similar to the types of questions I ask potential employers during a job interview. -Got a good night of sleep the night before the interview (mine was quite early since they were out of the country at the time). My interviewer didn't ask me where else I'd applied, but did ask in a roundabout way whether I could picture myself in Columbus rather than a larger city (if you get a variant of this question, you should probably say yes and sound like you mean it, haha ). I have family in Columbus and I already know/like the city so that was a non-issue for me. Remember, as much as they are interviewing you, in many ways you are also interviewing them. lonestarflag Posted February 3, 2014 Share Posted February 3, 2014 The purpose of interviews can vary significantly. I'm pretty sure one of mine this cycle was done entirely to ensure I'm sane. That being said, My POI just called me up out of the blue and chatted for half an hour. That being said, I think I prefer this method. (At least I did with her, when the phone rang, I said, "Hello" and she says, "Hi, this is *Name of Prof* at *Name of University* and my first thought was, "Oh. Crap." and I used a lot of her work in my senior thesis. On the other hand, my scheduled interviews have included, "Are you sure you want to go here?" Which was rather uncomfortable. They might ask something trying to figure out if you think they're competitive compared to the other schools you've applied to. Further, I got the, "How strong do you consider your methods?" questions as well. Just be prepared for the generic, "Why'd you apply here?" as well as how to repeat your SOP in 3-5 sentences. Last year, there was at least one acceptance mid-February. The year before, they had two full rounds seemingly, although in each round, all acceptances went out the same day.
