Anyone else's campus seemingly taken over by Pokemon Go?

I took a walk a few nights ago and stumbled across bundles of hundreds of people... crazy...

Long time no talk, y'all! I hope everyone's having a great summer as we gear up to start school in the fall.

Yesterday I got a call from the field education director at the social work school, and it sounds like I've already been placed with an organization! They had to confirm that I would be available for early orientation in August. The organization sounds right up my alley in terms of its mission statements and services.

I'm not on campus yet, but I love walking around the city trying to guess if other people on their phone are also trying to catch Pokemon near me. I haven't checked out one of those "official" meet-ups yet.

@Neist all I'm hearing about is Pokemon Go, and it sounds really good! But I'm deliberately not getting involved because I need another time suck like I need a hole in the head. It hasn't really kicked off too much in the UK yet (at least where I am) but I've been hearing a lot. At the minute campus is overrun by graduation. It wouldn't normally bother me except they're graduating and congregating right outside my office and I've had to stop the urge to yell at them "enjoy unemployment" multiple times today.

@RCtheSS YAY! Congrats :) That sounds pretty exciting!

Thanks @hippyscientist! I've been counting down the weeks until I can 1) move out of DC, 2) get settled in Chicago and 3) really start preparing for my program. I was so excited when I got the call yesterday and learned more about the work I could be doing.

How are things on your end? When are you moving stateside?

Also... on an unrelated note... I think my partner is going to propose to me soon. I'm kind of anxious and worried and upset lol.

Oh really?!  How exciting!  Why do you think this?  I mean besides the fact that you 2 have been together awhile and all.  You'll say yes right??  Ooooh you should go get your nails done now so they look great in your ring porn.  Actually you should probably just go for the works.....new outfit, hair done, nails, new shoes.....that way you 2 can take pics immediately after and you'll just happen to look amazing.

Yes lol.  They just look so ridiculously walking around, faces glued to their phones, and clueless about their surroundings.  One of these days someone is going to fall in a manhole.

Well I just sent my project (18,700 words) in to the printers! It should be ready to hand in either tomorrow or Friday :D Then I can move back to mums house for a couple weeks before I fly out on the 6th. Finally, some time to breathe!

@sjoh197 I completely missed your panic - sorry :( Have you had the conversation with your partner about marriage/readiness/life plan etc? I assume so but you never do know!

happy wednesday everyone! hope you all are doing well. :)

gahhh, only about three and a half weeks until i'm moved down to nashville! my dad and i are driving from new york, and i'm a little nervous about how that car ride will be. we both have similar quiet personalities, so i foresee awkward silence happening..but maybe it won't.

moving has made me realize how little clothes i have...i thought i had a ton but i'm seeing that's not the case. and most of my wardrobe is black, too. i think i need to change that...

also, i'm curious! what are you all's stances on mac vs pc? i've used both but i'm thinking of selling my macbook air for a pc in a couple weeks.

@hippyscientist Hahaha... my nails are always done. White tip and meticulously manicured. We have talked about it for some time now... but over the 4th of July weekend it was all the "talk" at our family get together about why he hadn't asked yet... and it kind of sent him into panic mode. He's been asking me about settings and ring sizes, and wants to take me to a jeweler. blah blah blah.

It's our "dating anniversary" next weekend, and we just received a suspicious sign-for delivery downstairs that I am NOT ALLOWED to pick up. It makes me a little concerned

When he tells people I don't even want a diamond, they lose their shit.

WHAT?!!?  But they're so classic and elegant.  Are you going with a different type of gemstone instead?  Any thoughts on cut?  I never tire of square or emerald cuts, but I've seen some lovely princesses and ovals.  And what about the wedding band?  Are you going to match or complement?  This is so much more interesting then my housemates in their underwear.

I had told him I didnt really need a ring, but he insisted i do. I only want princess cut, we agreed that a moissanite is a great alternative (although my second choice was aquamarine) and I don't really want a wedding band. I think we'll each just have 1 ring instead.

But we also wont have a bridal party, get married in a church, say traditional vows or have an actual wedding cake either. I've already planned out 80% of our wedding on Pinterest over the last 4 years. Lol.

I've always gone with PC/Windows, mainly because I'm a video gamer. My parents have since converted to Apple products, but we grew up with every iteration of Windows OS so it's what I'm most comfortable with.

Your man is right, a ring is a must.  An absolute must!  I see no reason why you can't have moissanite with aquamarine, it'll look very oceany.  I think omitting a lot of the traditional stuff....church, vows, etc makes sense if it isn't really representative of the 2 of you.  It's your special day and it should be memorable not stressful or exhausting.  I barely remember what women did before Pinterest showed you all sorts of options for weddings and any other type of event.

I'm currently doing all of my school work on a PC and have my old mac laptop at home. For what I'm doing there isn't much difference. UNless you're using a pc/mac specific program it shouldnt matter.

i think i prefer macs a little better though bc they feel less cluttered.

Penn State is a Pokemon hotbed! 'm playing a little bit but it's mostly when i walk my dog-- the longer ones on the weekend.

My project has officially started. We just ordered some supplies to test out and I'm typing up my participant info packet. I'm trying to be super organized and I think it's helping. But if anyone has any tips, let me know!

I'm so glad I got to bring my dog. He smells like cornchips though.

Yes! When me and the ex were planning the wedding I was instant that he not get me diamond. I know exactly what I want and it sounds quite similar to you actually. I don't get why people get so incredulous when you go against the grain though, as long as everyone's happy and not hurting anyone else I don't see the problem!

@Effloresce I have my macbook for home life, writing stuff on word, it has my mendeley desktop on and I also use it for video processing, and I have a PC on campus that will have the majority of my work stuff on. I like both so I use both!

Good to hear that other campuses are just as bad. :D

Don't get me wrong. The game is fun, but it's crazy how popular it is. I guess that at this point a lot of college students have been exposed to Pokemon their entire lives. Makes me feel old.

It hasn't even been released in Canada and already the Canadian police are warning us not to play it. I wanted to check it out next week in the US but I probably don't need something else to distract me (but I'll still do it anyway I'm sure.)

I really, really wanna play it but it's not supported on the 4s and my update is in October. :(

Why is a diamond or even a ring a must for marriage? Diamonds are *astronomically* marked up and its industry is atrocious. They are my birthstone, but I could never support it. I already feel shitty when I buy sweatshop products. If my partner bought me a diamond, I would be really upset as it doesn't align with my ethics & values at all (and they should know this if they're proposing to me lol). I'd rather put the money towards the honeymoon or to charity. My art teacher made a dagger for his wife and she loved it. My classmates were freaked out but I thought that was the most badass proposal ever.

And today I learned someone in my lab dropped out of the program.  I don't mean took a temporary leave of absence, but actually quit and will not be getting their PhD.  I think they at least finished the Master's enroute and I don't know the circumstances behind the decision, but wow.  To make matters worse they were the only person in the lab I really jived with so now I'm left with the others who are nice enough, but that's kind of it.  I'm really starting to wonder how I ended up here.

oh dear, i'm sorry to hear that. :(

maybe once you and the others get to know each other more, you'll find someone else that you jive with! also, are there opportunities to meet others outside of your cohort?

Overall I'll get along fine with my remaining labmates (these aren't my cohortmates, who I also don't jive with) in terms of getting work done, but we're just very different people socially.  Some are doing the family thing, another is kind of a band geek which might explain why they're behind schedule, and the rest just have way too much anxiety for my tastes.

And on top of it all I do have to go to physical therapy to deal with post car accident pain and guess how great University health insurance is?  Not at all.  Waiting til the lawyers settle everything isn't an option either.

Good grief men are gross.  There are even more guests here and they're all couples.  I'm drowning in couples and there are underwear clad men and shirtless men everywhere.  I never thought I'd be sick of the sight of not properly clothed men but oh how I am.
