Official Interview Thread 2017
panda1991 replied to joyannna's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I was also selected to interview at SF State. I am both extremely excited and anxious because it's my top choice and alma mater. My interview is scheduled for next Monday.- 200 replies

I did not apply to CSUSM, but a friend of mine applied two years ago and she said she was tested on anatomy, language development, and basic definitions during her phone interview.

Yes, I agree. Hopefully I will be able to figure out arrangements with work, but I'm local so I won't need to fly out if I am offered an interview.- 200 replies

Last year San Francisco State sent out interview notifications March 1st, so I'm guessing it will probably be similar this year. I also applied there.- 200 replies

How many grad schools did you apply to?
panda1991 replied to SpeechLaedy's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I decided to apply for 10 programs. I live in CA where it's super competitive, so I decided to branch out and also apply to out-of-state programs this round. Last year I only applied for 3 in-state programs. I'm feeling relieved since it seems like many others applied to similar numbers on this thread. It was exhausting to keep up with 10 programs, their deadlines, and requirements. -

@amsullivan Thanks! That's helpful to know. @lacuna Thank you, I hope so too. I just attended the information webinar yesterday, and I really like how the program is set up. -
NYU Steinhardt online distance program

Same here with my GRE scores. I'm pretty nervous, but I'm trying to stay hopeful about a decision. It's reassuring to be able to vent out some of my anxiety on this forum. I'll cross my fingers for the both of us. -

I decided to apply for Fall admission and my application was finalized on 1/9. Is anyone else currently waiting on a decision? -
For the neuroanatomy requirement, I believe it depends on the program. Some might allow you to take it as a graduate student, but others may require you to take it before enrolling. It's best to email the programs directly and ask. I'm not too familiar with many of the programs you listed, but ASHA edfind is a pretty good resource to see how your stats match up to different schools' requirements. Some schools also list this information on their department website as well.

Hello! I will be applying to Idaho State's program, and I was wondering if anyone has any information about the differences between Idaho State's Meridian and Pocatello campuses. The information about their clinics used to be on their website, but now it leads me to a broken link. I would really appreciate any knowledge you guys might have about their campuses.

Ranking doesn't matter when choosing an SLP master's program, my understanding is that rankings have to do with the school's research. One important consideration to make when selecting programs would be to look at the program's praxis pass rates, but that may be more helpful when initially selecting programs. Also, for me, when deciding where to apply, it was also important to consider cost of living in the location of the program, and what populations/opportunities that the school's clinic has to offer. Most programs have a link to their clinic on their website. I think for most people cost and location are the most important considerations, but that really depends on your income and amount of funding that the school may offer.

Thank you! I've seen your posts around as well. Well, I found out from someone who's a grad student now, that some of the programs in California get so many applicants (pretty sure this is true for SDSU) that they just rank them by GPA and GRE and auto decline based on an arbitrary cut-off point. Since my GPA and GRE score are a little more "average", I decided that I'm only going to apply to places that are close by that have specialties I'm interested in (mainly autism), and if I don't get into those, then I'd rather move somewhere out of state with a lower cost of living. Just my personal preference. I'm applying to a couple programs that have WICHE agreements (University of Northern Colorado and possibly Idaho State), and then a few in the midwest. I'm interested in the lower cost of living, and my husband has family in the midwest. Also on a side note, I noticed you go to SF state. I graduated from there, and their program is my top choice. They reserve half their spots for SFSU students/alumni.

Studied for 5 months, performed poorly on exam
panda1991 replied to SundayMatinee's topic in GRE/GMAT/etc
I suggest emailing the Magoosh support and asking them to extend your membership. I was able to extend mine for free for a month and I had originally bought mine back in 2014 (when I took the GRE and decided not to apply). I just retook the GRE today and I got higher scores today even though I studied for a lesser amount of time. Last time I studied for 3 months only watching the Magoosh videos, doing the practice exams for each section, and practicing the same problems right after I learned them. This time I studied for a month off and on, and I did a few things differently. I did far more practice exams (including ETS's 2 free exams, Magoosh's custom practice, and 1 of Manhattan GRE's that come with the books). I looked at my areas of weakness, according to the problems I frequently missed (from Magoosh), and practiced on those areas separately and also did mixed practice (with all math or all reading), and watched videos with Magoosh for the ones I missed/guessed. I also went through a few of Manhattan GRE Prep's math books, and studied vocabulary with Magoosh's vocab application. I rewatched a handful of Magoosh's videos, especially for my weakness which was reading comprehension. I realized that it's more important to review concepts and practice them as often as you can. I avoided the math ones this time because I did not enjoy the instructor as much, and decided to use the books I had instead. To answer your question, continue using magoosh's vocab app and ETS's practice exams. Since you already have the official guide I highly recommend doing many practice problems from there, mixed custom practice problems from Magoosh, as well as going through the Manhattan math GRE books. I didn't have time to go through them all, but I did still see a difference in my score. I did not use the 5 lb prep book, but I have heard good things about it. Also, Magoosh has lots of free resources including an ebook with vocab, and a 1 month study guide. Do as many practice problems as you can, and work on getting your time down and understand why you made mistakes. I realized I was rushing through reading the questions on verbal, leading me to get a question wrong that I would have otherwise gotten right. I hope that was helpful! -
I am also applying with similar stats. My overall GPA is 3.4 and my CSD is 3.6. I just retook the GRE today and was able to score slightly higher than last time in both sections, but I'm waiting on my writing score. Since this is my second round after applying to 3 programs last year, I will be applying to about 8 schools, with 3 in California. Most programs I'm applying for look at the last 60 units, which for me is a 3.7. I do have some anxiety about my applications, but I've gotten some good feedback about my revised personal statement, so that's what's keeping me sane.
-
I'm also stressing out over applications. I had a dream last night I got an interview notification for my top choice lol. @plume I'm trying to keep my list of schools around 8 because I don't have the money to apply for more. Also, it's my understanding that many programs for speech pathology heavily weigh your CSD GPA. and many may only look at your last 60 units. @CLCD I agree with what Florida Speechie said. If you don't want to retake the GRE, then I suggest working on your letter of intent and/or resume, I think that's probably the most important aspect that you can change. I'm a second-year applicant, but I have made major edits to my resume and statement this time. I had about eight people, including SLP's and graduate students, read my statement that I will be submitting.

I've been lurking around the forums, and I've seen your posts before. I was hoping you would get into a program soon and I'm excited you finally did. Congratulations! This is my second year applying and I hope to hear good news after revamping my entire application. However, I'll be applying to in-person programs that are out of state as well this cycle. -

Official Fall 2016 Interview Thread
panda1991 replied to OverCaffeinated's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Does anyone know how long you should wait to contact the school if you haven't heard back by the time that they said they would have decisions made? -
No, it wasn't on CSDCAS. Applications closed last month for the Fall semester, by the way. If you're interested in their program, you should check out their program website. I feel that they have a more holistic approach than most California schools. http://www.calbaptist.edu/academics/schools-colleges/college-health-science/public-health-sciences/master-of-science-speech-language-pathology/
