  1. I know a few people who got their MA in counseling before pursing their PhD!
  2. May I ask why you feel you need to go do a MA in psych if you ultimately want to get a PhD in Clinical Psych? Is it due to lack of research or low GPA? This was my first application cycle for counseling and clinical PhD programs in the US this season and received offers from both without a MA. If you want to PM and talk about your options, feel free to!
  3. I won't tell you my whole life story on a post but I went through something very similar with my ex-SO. If you need someone to chat with about personal experiences with long distance/PhD choosing/etc. feel free to message me!
  4. I'm not completely sure how big of a focus neuro is at U of Rhode Island but when I was interviewing for the clinical dept, there was quite a few clinical applicants applying to work with people who specialize in neuro research. Funding there is a little sketch, just a warning, but worth a look!
  5. NYU?! That's amazing!! I am in love with NY and will actually be visiting NYC soon! (Crazy to believe but I actually won a free trip through work!) And thank you!! Now just counting down the days till August. Am I right? haha
  6. I completely understand how you're feeling since that was me all Dec-Jan. It can be so hard to keep your chin up, especially when it feels like life keeps knocking you down. I hope you have good friends/family/or lab mates that you can lean on, that was really the only way I am where I am in my personal happiness today. And yes, there are days where the loneliness creeps back into my mind (especially those rainy days, ugh!) but over time the good days outweigh the bad ones. I keep telling myself that something better, relationship wise, must be coming my way right? I know good things will be coming your way too Keep the faith that it will and feel free to reach out if you ever need to!
  7. Snapchat. I seriously don't get its appeal other than the "pretty filter" which just makes me look more pale. sigh
  8. I have had a root canal done and I was good to go as soon as the procedure was over. Personally, my tooth and surrounding areas were super sore for about two weeks but they gave me a steroid pack and told me to take Advil whenever it started hurting. Oh, and you always won't be able to eat on whatever side of the mouth the do work on for a few days. They may require you to have someone drive and pick you up but they may just have been my case because I have to take Valium (thanks dental anxiety). Other than that, it's basically like getting a more in depth filling. Nothing crazy like wisdom teeth. Hope that helps
  9. My ex-SO decided to drop the ball on our relationship FOUR DAYS before my applications were due so I feel your pain It was hard to deal with knowing the past four years obviously meant more to me than him but now after a few months, I am feeling more like myself again. I know people always say it gets better and you want to punch those people right in the face (maybe being a tad bit dramatic) but trust me, it really does get better. If you need a vent buddy, I am all ears. Hope you hear good news from schools soon!
  10. I also decided to go the counseling route over clinical, nice to meet someone else who did the same And congrats on making a decision!
  11. I'll PM you what I'm pretty sure the POI initials are!
  12. This is Missouri Kansas City correct? If so, my friend interviewed, received an offer immediately after that weekend and accepted it. Hope that info helps at all!
  13. I can only speak from personal experience on this so others may have a different opinions but the clinical psych lab I have been apart of the past 2 years (children abnormal sexual behavior based) wasn't necessarily my desired population of interest (juveniles/adults in correctional/forensic psych). For my area, it's just really hard to get forensic experience if you don't have at least an MA so most people I interviewed with totally understood why my research experience wasn't completely aligned with my interests. I just made sure in my SOP to explain how/why I believed that experiences from my time in the lab would contribute to my success in my desired area if I were to be admitted to the program. Hope that helps at all!
  14. YES! I was lucky enough to have an amazing support system while I applied to grad school so I did the bare minimum work-wise to focus on my apps (went from 40hr+ weeks at a hospital to part time at a retail store) and will continue to work retail until I leave for school in August...AND I. AM. SO. BORED. I will get to take a summer class since I need to finish a prereq but it's only two days a week at my undergrad, not my future school. I have no idea how to not get stir crazy waiting all summer so I feel your pain! Of course, I'm sure will miss all this free time at times once we're busy grad students but oh well
  15. That one off Robinson though...I dream about their cheeseburgers and chocolate milkshakes
  16. I'm just sad I won't be able to get Pie Junkie/Empire Pizza/Cafe Cacao/Braums whenever I please once I leave OK
  17. Oh dang, I figured that was probably likely. Thanks for letting me know!
  18. Long shot but if any other applicant's who accepted at Central Arkansas Counseling Psych program want to connect before the summer, feel free to PM me! I know there's five of us total coming in and would love to get to know everyone
  19. I second this 100%! When I saw that the website listed which POI's were taking students, I made sure to email to introduce myself and to confirm that they were actually taking a student as indicated on the website. Everyone I applied to were happy to confirm
  20. Right?! I am totally thankful for my assistantship but the cut of money I'm use to will be a challenge. Regardless of it all, I am excited for this opportunity and new chapter! Good luck at OU! I'm from Norman so it's awesome to find other Okies on this forum
  21. I reached out at the end of September/early October and all POI's I contacted got back to me pretty quickly. They usually have a good idea of funding opportunities by then
  22. Thanks for bumping this! I'd really like to hear about current students experiences with this! Little about me. Technically a not a first generation college student (both parents are college drop outs) but I am the first person in my family to get my BA/BS and without a doubt the first person in my entire family line to go get a MA/PhD. I also am doing this without any type of financial support from my family. I was SO lucky that I had a great aunt who apparently saw my ambition and left me a sum of money for me to use for college (of course, this was all used to pay for my undergrad tuition for 5 years) but I am coming in blind on what to expect financially for my PhD (I will have a GA throughout my time in school, thank god!). I have had friends who are what I would call your standard "poor college student" who have gone on to get PhD's and struggled immensely with getting through it without stressing about money while the other in their cohorts (all whose parents have PhD's/oodles of money) live without worrying about the cost of living. I would love advice on how others in my situation balance their budgets but still get to do things with other students in their cohort! Also anyone who shares the same experiences, feel free to connect with me! I have to say I am pretty nervous but I am excited about this new adventure!
  23. Did the programs tell around when they will be making decisions? Every program I interviewed at gave us a ballpark idea of when we would hear back and they were pretty consistent. It took over a month to hear back on one due to the dept trying to figuring out funding so always remember that that could be an issue at hand. I wouldn't give up hope, some things just take time
  24. Does anyone have any good guides/tips they use to watch their finances? I was lucky enough to not pay for undergrad myself and I had a great job after graduating so I feel like the low income is going to be an adjustment for me
