I am in the same boat. My top two schools are both counseling programs. One is pretty well known for counseling but both are no where near as prestigious at the clinical program I interviewed at. And honestly? I was not nearly as impressed with the clinical program as I was with the counseling. I just think "fit" is SO important. I didn't feel the fit with the clinical program like I did the other two, and if you're going to be there for 4-6y yrs I think it's better to choose where you think you'll thrive the most. Just my two cents though.

I'll be the first to say my GRE scores were AWFUL, like below average awful. To the point where I cried in front of my mentor and said applying was pointless. But I worked my butt off for the past two years (doing research in a psych lab, presenting multiple projects at national/regional/local conferences, working in a clinical setting) to off set the awfulness of my scores. This is my first cycle to apply w/o a masters and I received three interviews out of 9 PhD programs I applied to. Did it keep me from getting more? Probably. But did it keep me out of the running? Absolutely not. Not one of the schools I've interviewed at even mentioned my GRE scores. My advice is to aim for the highest you can, but don't get discouraged. Your hard work will be noticed by the right people and the right schools!

To add to this, a girl from my lab who waitlisted at all of her schools she interviewed at (4, if not more I believe) and ended up receiving offers from all of them! It's a slim chance but a chance none the less! -
Fall 2017 Counseling Psychology Applicants

I have interviewed at two counseling programs this cycle and I found that the counseling programs did not focus on my CV (research experience really) as much as I thought they would. They seemed to focus more on my professional goals and things I stated in my personal statement. I also found that many wanted to know why I chose to apply to counseling vs. clinical so it may be good to have an answer ready for that one! Also, you may know that most counseling programs have a large emphasis on diversity so I made it known that I chose to apply to programs who promoted diversity because of the population I want to work with. Just some things I noticed! As for group interviews, I felt like that was the easiest part of the whole interview. We all were given one question to answer (a random question) and then the floor was open to us to ask any questions we had. Of course, this could be different anywhere you go but I felt like everyone in my group had a very positive experience.- 204 replies

Fall 2017 Clinical Psychology Applicants

So I just received an email this morning from a school stating that the graduate college has reviewed my app and referred it to the psychology dept. Is it weird that it's just now going to the dept? I saw that this school had interviews for their clinical dept (so I assumed rejection) but I applied to their clinical "child" track so could this go through a separate process? Anyone's thoughts/personal experiences are appreciated! -

Thank you both! I am under the impression that 5 faculty will be listening in on the interview which I think is what made me nervous about how it would go. I will definitely be using your advice though! -

Anyone got any quick tips for a phone interview? I have one later today and they didn't really provide any information about how it will be going so I'm hoping I'm prepped correctly. Thanks! -

Same thing happened to me with Nebraska-Lincoln. Everyone was getting interviews or rejections and I was sitting in silence. Someone told me they probably had different tiers of how they reject and that mine was on the way..they were right, I got mine a week after everyone else. I'm sure that's not the news you wanted to hear but that is what happened to me personally. Hoping that you get better news than me!- 89 replies

I didn't even think about the 3oz rule when you fly carry on only..ugh!

EXACTLY! I hadn't even thought about it until a girl in my lab mentioned how someone told her if you tend to touch your hair like bangs, or move it from side to side then maybe think about wearing it up but wearing mine up always gives me a headache. Decisions, decisions.

Names AND emails?! That sounds like way too much personal information for my liking. I was shocked when one of my schools sent out a schedule with just our first and last names on it. The stalking has more than likely commenced. -
Oh just thought of something I am growing concerned about. My ladies (and dudes!) with long hair, what did you do with yours for interview? I want to wear it down and curly but am worried that I may be messing with it too much throughout the day. Do you guys think wearing it up is more professional? Thoughts?

I'm also concerned about this. I have a leather binder I planned to keep extra CV's/my interview questions/etc. in but I am strongly considering carrying a small cross-body purse to keep keys/phone/chapstick/granola bar/wallet in. I'm sure they won't necessarily care all that much as long as you aren't fidgeting with it during the actual interviews but who knows

Rejection Thread (Fall 2017 applicants)

School Name: Sam Houston StateArea/Degree: Clinical PsychologyRationalization: Assuming my terrible GRE scores or that maybe not all my materials were received via the Postal Service.Comment: Presumed. Interview weekend is next week. Coping Tactics: Prepping for interviews, listening to my uber supportive friends tell me how awful living in Huntsville TX would be, haha (whatever helps right?) School Name: University of Missouri-ColumbiaArea/Degree: Clinical PsychologyRationalization: Again, GRE scores probably had something to do with it. Comment: Presumed. Interviews are in a couple days and I haven't heard anything. Pretty bummed about this school. Coping Tactics: Prepping for interviews, doing my new workout regimen in hopes it will relieve the stress...so far not working- 89 replies

I heard back from Rhode Island earlier today. The invite came from two graduate coordinators and didn't mention anything specific about my specific POI's but I can PM if you'd like! -

Rejection Thread (Fall 2017 applicants)
ellieotter replied to deeeeeletedpeacetgc's topic in Psychology Forum
School: Nebraska-Lincoln Area/Degree: Clinical Rationalization: Not greatest GRE scores, plus there was a ton of applicants. Comment: Not too upset about it, my POI wasn't very friendly when we interacted with each other. Coping tactics: Knew it was coming since I saw offers had already been sent out. Chalked it up to if they don't want me, then I don't want to be there either! Going to focus on the interviews I have!- 89 replies

Can anyone direct me to the thread about multiple interviews on the same day and how to proceed with asking if there's anyway to reschedule and/or Skype instead? Thank you! I just couldn't find it while scrolling.
