  1. Your Low GPA and low verbal score are going to be a significant obstacle. From my personal experience, recommendation letters from Indian universities tend to be valued less than from some of the other countries. Admissions committees have noticed over the years that students from India have been writing their own letters and started adjusting their weight accordingly. So, I would not count on the letters. Then, your excellent TOEFL score might make them ignore the low verbal score. So, a positive there. Overall, your profile does not stand out in any noticeable manner, so, just cross your fingers and hope for the best.
  2. Yeah, sorry to say this, but it will be hard with your profile to get into the Universities you mentioned. Even if you get a stellar GRE score (Q>165; V>160; AWA>4), they will still be skeptical because of your low GPA. It will be a long shot, add some safe universities to your list.
  3. You have an Ok profile. You might get into ASU, Irvine, Santa Barbara. I can not comment on any other university. Do not expect any fellowships or scholarships though.
  4. Yes, when the number of applications is too many, they usually use cutoff GPA and GRE scores to cut down the number to a manageable level. Not to worry, though, the cutoffs are usually very low, just to eliminate the applicants that should not even be there, like a GPA of 2.5 to 3.00 with bad GRE scores and nothing to show for research, things like that.
  5. Thank You very much, Andrew. I do have a lot of questions about Petroleum Engineering. I will definitely be in touch.
  6. Focus on why you are changing majors. Try to give them honest but convincing answers. Tell them why/how you lost interest in Physics/EE and why/how you realized that CS is your passion/interest. Do not be too dramatic about it; be professional, honest, and clear. No, your application will not be disregarded because of background in a different field. They do seriously consider all the applications that pass the first elimination process. So, if your GRE, GPA, and other aspects are good, you don't have to worry about being rejected because of the major change. Give it your best shot and hope for the best! Peace!
  7. Just stop thinking about it and take the test again. Look for a date right after the 21st day from today and register for the test. I am sure you will do well on the second one. you have already prepared well for this one, so, it will be Ok the second time. Do IT!!
  8. I would go with the second one. Or if you can afford it, send both. People think it is bad when you report more than one score, but it is not. At least in your case, it is not. They will see the improvement in the quant section. But, if you only want to send one, go with the second one. Peace!!
  9. Just an update, I do not really need to take TOEFL, but I took it anyway and scored 118 (Speaking 28, everything else 30).
  10. Your GRE and TOEFL are weak. I agree with Edotdl that nothing stands out about your profile for me. You have a fair chance of getting into UT Dallas, Arizona State, Oregon State, Ohio State, University of Washington. As for the rest of them, I wouldn't count on it. Sorry!!
  11. Yeah, but 305 is very low especially considering how much you scored on the practice tests. Are you going to retake the test? I would do it if I were you.
  12. Why take the TOEFL again? 110 is good for any university. TOEFL score is just to show the university that you can speak, write, read, and comprehend English lectures, conversations, and passages. Beyond that TOEFL score is useless. Do not take TOEFL again. Concentrate on the GRE and score in the 90th percentile on both sections of the test.
  13. 8.1/10 is about 3.0 - 3.3/4.0. This is a low GPA for Texas A&M and the University of Michigan. You might have a good shot at Ohio state and Georgia Tech.
  14. People really need the GRE scores to evaluate your profile.
  15. Hello, Satvik, UW? Wisconsin? Washington? Wyoming? Be clear. Then coming to your profile, your GPA is low; it is roughly equal to 2.0 - 2.4/4.0 which is very low. Most universities will not even look at an application with such GPA. Your GRE is not stellar, I am not saying it is bad, but it is about average for the universities you listed. That score would have been Ok if your GPA was good, but with that GPA, you need a 95th percentile score on both sections of the GRE to even be considered for admission. I am sorry to say this, but you do not have a chance at A&M. Penn state and Ohio state I am not sure but would not be easy with that GPA.
  16. Your GRE score is Good. GPA 8/10 would be roughly equal to 3.0 - 3.3/4.0 which is a bit on the lower side. Your publication might make up for the low GPA if it is an important paper. You have a good chance of getting into UCSD and UCSB, a fair chance for U Chicago, Purdue and a slim to fair chance for UCLA, UT Austin. Your low GPA might be a problem for UCLA and UT Austin. And finally, most of the members of the admission committee at U.S universities would not be familiar with IITs; the reputation is not global. So that will unfortunately not help you. I am sorry!
  17. Congratulations! I hear you. I had the same doubt when I came back from the test center. I was wondering if official scores are going to be exactly same. The answer is YES! 99% of the time the official scores are exactly equal to the scores you see at the end of the test. (I took my test on October 8th BTW and got the scores on the 19th of October)
  18. Hello, I am also applying for Grad schools for Fall 17 semester (Petroleum Engineering). Your profile is less than ideal for reputed petroleum engineering programs. 64% in India would be equivalent to about 2.5 CGPA on the 4.0 scale. That is very low, and Petroleum Engineering is one of the most competitive programs in the United States. Let's say your eight years experience in the Oil and Gas industry will make the admission committee overlook your very low GPA, that still leaves the low GRE score. 300 is nowhere near enough to get into a petroleum engineering program at any U.S university. So, what should you do now? Maybe retake the GRE general test. The score in the top 10% of the test takers if possible. If that is too hard for you at least try to score 163- 165 on the quantitative section and 152-156 on the verbal and no less than 3.5 on the writing. Then, write an incredibly persuasive Statement of Purpose. Explain in that why you have a low GPA and how your eight years experience in the field can compensate for that. Get good letters of recommendations from your employer. By "good" I mean great! Stellar letters of recommendation. Do all that, and they might consider letting you in. Getting into Petroleum Engineering Grad programs is very hard and you have to be willing to put in the effort.
  19. You really messed up on the test day or something? What happened here? I never saw such difference between Real scores and Power Prep scores.
  20. You have an excellent profile except for the low GRE score. I think they might let it pass if you have good letters of recommendation. Maybe try to explain why you have a low GRE score on your personal statement. I don't think those universities are too ambitious for your profile. Go for it!
  21. There guys; hope that helps. Let me know if you still have any problems.
