It probably depends on the program. I, for example, got a 158Q, 163V, 5.5AW and I wish my Q was a little higher (especially because I love stats... just not random math like laws of triangles). That being said, I have been offered interviews at 7 of 10 programs I applied to this cycle as an undergrad (some of which are extremely competitive). This GRE score, while it wasn't my "best," was enough to probabaly get me in the door at which point my strong SOP, LORs, and pubs/presentations speak for themselves. My mentor, who is the DCT at my university, refuses to take on undergrads below a 3.5 GPR and similarly highly discourages any faculty member to take a grad student who has a worse GRE than the previous year's average. There is a lot of evidence about the GRE correlating to success in graduate work, so that's his logic. I wouldn't say count yourself out with a truly average score, but I would seriously consider retaking the test if you think you can study harder and improve your score.

Fall 2017 Clinical Psychology Applicants

Maybe it's just my interpretation, but some of the feedback people are providing appears to be passive agressive in nature. (I could be totally wrong, as I've been wrong before in interpreting voice over the internet.) It would have been one thing if people said "well, maybe you didn't have a good fit there" or something like that. But getty what appears to be snarky really doesn't accomplish anything, except perhaps to give an outlet to the snarky folks. And I never said that being stressed affords you the right to talk down a school... however, it probably explains why they phrased thigns that way. I, personally, can at least understand and be a little gracious towards them and their response when I think about things in this framework even though I don't think ClinicalPSY's phrasing was gracious at all. Yet, while some of the responses where indeed in the same vain of the comment about Minoa and UC Berkley (which was a graceless comment), stooping to the same level is pointless. Anyways, I didn't come on here to argue with anonymous internet folks. I hope everyone has a good Super Bowl Sunday, and best of luck with the interview/admissions process. -

Okay, so I didn't like ClinicalPSY's phrasing either, but can we all stop bashing him/her now? This is a stressful process for everyone, so I think we can exhibit a little more grace. -

If they are taking only 1 student, then they will work their way down the list starting at the person they offered admission and going down the wait list. You could inquire about your position as an alternate if you want. Best of luck. -

Clinical Psych PhD GROUP Interview?

Odds are it's just a conversation between the group and the interviewer... At least that was my experience at a program I interviewed at last week.- 9 replies

BU interview day is Feb 10, so I would presume all interviews are out. My POI (not your person) contacted me last Thursday. -

Preparing for Clinical PhD Interview
Clinapp2017 replied to nervous_nellie's topic in Psychology Forum
I've been on two (about to go on my 3rd of 8) and I would just say to read over your materials, read over the faculty profiles you are interested in doing work with at the program, etc. You should be proud because you are in the top group of applicants. There will be a few other people interviewing for the same spot, but you shoudn't be worried about being tripped up or something.- 48 replies

If anyone is waiting out on Boston University, I wouldn't lose all hope until at least tomorrow. I was discouraged on Wednesday when I saw a big batch of BU posts go out, and was shocked/super excited to get an interview offer via email from my POI this afternoon. My POI is huge in our field, so this is an incredible honor. ? -

Rejection Thread (Fall 2017 applicants)
Clinapp2017 replied to deeeeeletedpeacetgc's topic in Psychology Forum
Bahahaha basically same for my psych gre. I'm a strong applicant for the field I want to go into, and frankly I don't give any sh*ts about social psych at all because it has little to do with medicine/neuropsych. But heck, I guess people are moving that you have to be "well rounded" before you "specialize."- 89 replies

Rejection Thread (Fall 2017 applicants)
Clinapp2017 replied to deeeeeletedpeacetgc's topic in Psychology Forum
School: SDSU/UCSD Joint Doctoral Program, U of Houston (presumed), WashU/WUSTL in St. Louis (Presumed), Area/Degree: Clinical Psychology, PhDRationalization: SDSU/UCSD was a reach because my psych gre scores were average. I have a background in the medical/neuroscientific perspectives of psych and virtually no training in developmental/social psych, so naturally I will do poorly on a test that is ~75% social/developmental. For U of H, my research interests didn't really match well with my POI (I'd be shifting concentrations within a sub-speciality and that's not something I really want to do anyways). WashU hurts the most because my POI was very receptive to my emails before I applied and basically indicated that I should be getting an interview based on my qualifications. Coping tactics: Prepping for all my other interviews (and internally screaming at my shrinking bank account), hoping for an acceptance from the school I interviewed at a week ago, working on a first-author pub I have that's in revision with a high impact factor journal, and finishing out my undergrad strong.- 89 replies

When I talked to my POI on interview day, they said it could take several weeks (if not more) to extend acceptances because they send the full offer package (letter and stipend details) when they notify people. They also told me you'd be notified if you are a top choice or rejected, but said they think that if you are in the wait-list they may not contact you at all. I'm not worrying about it for a while because I have other interviews/classes to focus on for now. Best of luck to you! -
My poster at a well known speciality conference won a student award (1 of 5 awarded amongst hundreds of posters). I'm also an undergrad, so that's a pretty big accomplishment. The conference was conveniently before my apps were due, so when I emailed POIs about turning in my app, I also mentioned the poster/award and how that really reflects upon my lab and mentor (trying to be humble because honestly my mentor could have crushed my soul if he wanted to). I've received 6 interview offers so, anecdotally, I would say it doesn't hurt.

Not super anxious personally (low on the totum pole because of the poor funding), but I'm in that boat with you. I'm fortunate, though, to have several other interviews lined up so I'm just sitting on my hands with UTSW right now. -

Psa: if anyone is waiting on UCSD/SDSU invites for the neuropsych track, I received an email saying invites for this program and track will go out late next week. It's my understanding that the behavioral track people may have been invited this week (?) and posted unclearly here, causing a panic or something. (Glad I didn't call them and pester... haha). -

I'm not exactly sure. The experimental profs and I are going to grab a beer after the welcome dinner from the grad students the Thursday night of interviews because they are both out of town the following day for a conference. The profs both work in the same "center" that my clinical POI works in, so I imagine there's a lot of collaboration in general. I appreciate them reaching out, and definitely having more allies in the admissions process won't hurt me one bit. Yeah I think it's hard for profs to say how many students they can take based on advisee load. I know lots of universities (and topics that get little funding) have contigent professors who are willing to accept if funding comes through but if not they really can't. It's kinda a giant crap-shoot is my understanding, but it sounds like you are a strong and sought after applicant so that's good!!! -

It is also my first round applying too, but I would saying getting an invite from a professor who is accepting students (and does research relating to your interests) is a good thing. From what I've heard from grad students in my lab, profs will often "compete" for top students between one another, or where appropriate co-mentorship is possible. For example, for one program I am interviewing at for clinical psych (don't want to publish name for anonymity), my POI reached out to me to invite me to interview back in December. However, there's also a lot of experimental profs who do similar research as my interests, so I've also been randomly contacted by two experimental profs who want to meet and talk with me. I think someone talking to you is a good thing, especially if your interests match! You may or may not meet the other profs (they may or may not be taking students). I'd ask the grad coordinator or other professors directly about their taking status since you now have an interview. Say something along the lines of "Dear Prof X, I see prof Y has invited me to interview at university and I am honored. Since our interests match, I am wondering if I can also meet with you in addition to prof y on grad student day." Hope this helps and congrats on the interview! -

I applied to their clinical health progam and got a super annoying email last week saying they are processing my app and I should fill out my fafsa hahaha. I'll take that as hopefully good news for now. -
If I were you, I'd contact the program coordinator or specialist directly and ask if they are going to send out the schedule. They may not sent out full schedules until your arrival at the interview itself. Best of luck!
