This should really be why you want to attend and how it will help you rather than the personal narrative that may be more the style of a SOP. Be all glowy about the program and why you want to attend. You may also want to emphasize why you are a great fit and what you would contribute, however it is a letter of why you are motivated to attend this specific institute and how it relates to your goals. It's not that different from a SOP, but you won't for example mention projects you have run in great detail. Rather emphasize why this program is your dream program. So the focus is more on the program than on you as an applicant

honestly, business casual is a broad spectrum (and because of that tricky), so there's quite some room on what you can actually wear. Business casual for women is for example not necessarily a blazer. Just look presentable and definitely don't go in your big oversized sweater with the sports leggings you wear to class.

In line with previous comments; I think one advice I would give to people (as a current PhD student) is to cultivate a social network OUTSIDE of academics. My partner and most of my friends work in business-related areas and already have offered to introduce me/refer me internally if I decide I want to go on that job market (and knowing from my short stint in consultancy, they DO take being referred seriously). It also helps to see things in perspective/against the isolation-like feelings for me. I feel everyone within the PhD is so set on the academic job market that it can be sometimes hard to see all the good things about the non-academic job market from time to time.

Ask the international office. As far as I know yo don't need to change the sticker in your passport but make sure to save all your I-20s. The sticker only allows you permission to enter the US really; the I20 and the like determine whether you're legally allowed to be present in the US.

Decided to go with the suit pants & white shirt and nice cardigan because of the two blazers I have here, one blazer screams 80s and the other one pajama fashion :') And my nice on is halfway across the world..

not sure but they're arranging which candidate is staying where so I assume not too long ago. They may follow through with Skype, but I think it is unlikely at this point.

This is why I always take pictures of the place both when I move in and move out to have 'proof' of what the place was like both when I entered and left (i.e., damages that were already there and not due to me, etc.). You won't be the first nor the last person this happens too.

YES! But totally outside our control. I don't think any department will hold this against their applicants ever.

Maybe ask a professor at a local institute if you can help them? Look for funding opportunities as well.

ahahahhaha. That's a specific 'breed' of people (i.e., certain subculture - predominantly considered white, upper class males from certain towns in the country). If you were in A'dam you also probably came across the colorful bell bottom pants for women (only in A'dam). When I was working in consulting, dark jeans were considered 'business enough' lolz.

Having gone out of academics to business and back - I dont think at this point I love academics as much as I expected nor hate business that much..
