And don't be afraid to google people lol. You'd be surprised what you may dig up that you wish you'd had none beforehand. People don't seem to be that good at making their facebook profiles private

Which social science PhD is easiest to get into? Best job market?
PokePsych replied to neurosoc's topic in Psychology Forum
Organizational Psych seems to be doing quite well on the job market. Social psych will also depend for a big part on what your line of research is on. -
i think megabus has occasionally 1 dollar tickets if you book far in advance.

I'm pro roommate, but it's also because I'm bad at living alone. Although I do extensive 'interviews' on similar lifestyles or at least similar values and have been pretty OK on finding people similar to me. I do live with other PhDs though, preferably other incoming people in a cohort can be a good option/and or people already in the department/ or maybe through someone you know like that. DO get an individual lease if possible though and do make some sort of agreements/rules in general.

F1 VISA funding documents for PhD students
PokePsych replied to Paramita's topic in IHOG: International House of Grads
Will ur funding be for each year? I brought the letter I received to prove, the guy checked it and was convinced (although mine was completely funded + some extra). -
NYU vs Teachers College, Columbia: MA in Psychology
PokePsych replied to gradstudentMACP95's topic in Psychology Forum
I"m an incoming student in the PhD program at Columbia (social psych focus) - so I won't be any source of info on the actual program but feel free to hit me up with any questions otherwise.- 10 replies

Commuting (~95mins, highway) Philosophy PhD Program
PokePsych replied to OccasionalOccasionalist's topic in Officially Grads
Another option would be to 'try' to do either option for one semester or a year and see how that works. I would not 'expect' to not having to be on campus or be able to get work done in traffic. I disagree with this. I think its totally fine to have emotional support for whatever reason - not just for the decision but also after. doing long distance now and I certainly miss the distraction or 'break from academics' that comes so natural with my SO + just miss being around my SO (and it's not like we can see on the weekend or even during short breaks given that my SO is literally on the other side of the world). It's super important to be around and with those who support us- 20 replies

PokePsych replied to OccasionalOccasionalist's topic in Officially Grads
I don't think socializing with your peers should be the reason to 'not-commute'. Rather commuting in itself is pretty taxing (tiring, annoying, wasted time....). At least it was for me when I did it for a year in grad school. I could def use the extra hour of sleep, and I wasn't the best to my SO after a long day at 'work' and another 1.5 hrs in transport. Would it be an option to go home on the weekends?- 20 replies

I would advise against such a long commute. As others have said - you're more or less expect to be around every day (or at least pretty often) - although this varies a bit per major. However, most things will be happening at campus and you'd be expected to be over quite often. I did such a commute in my first year of grad school - it was incredibly taxing and half the time also a waste of time (note that I took trains, so I could read...). It left me exhausted...- 20 replies

Let's just say I'm incredibly grateful to have a very supportive partner in every possible way and we're certainly on equal footing and respect a lot of things in each other and do not look down, despite him being better at some things than me. I'm proud to be with my partner and proud of the person he is. I also think our careers, dreams, and goals are equally valuable. Although I'm probably 'ahead', I do everything in my power to support him to make his dreams come true. I wouldn't want it any other way. People love each other in different ways, but I think it is important to me as a person to feel loved and (unconditionally) supported by my partner - regardless of how he/she expresses it. I'm certainly not saying that you should break up or anything. However, I think it is important to also make sure both sides needs are met (of course not everything is always possible).

I have a lot of thoughts, but I would recommend maybe talking to a counselor. Most schools have places where you can get a few sessions for free.

I honestly keep a working 'lit' review on a number of topics. But it's also because I get most of my ideas while I'm writing/organizing info in text. I know this is different for everyone. I also organize them in my reference manager undre different tabs/folders and tags

i think you also may want to consider what your research interests are - you'll probably be working with faculty and it could be helpful for your network + to learn relevant techniques to one of the two that closer aligns in that regard.- 10 replies
