  1. I think the dell xps 13 might be good?
  2. I might be wrong, but some programs state that they take the latest if you've had several attempts
  3. Though i think once you've confirmed your list of schools you'd wanna send your gre scores and transcript asap. That way if things dont line up you have enough time to resend. Towards the deadline the committee gets overwhelmed with e-mails wrt missing items so you might end up waiting a week or 2 for them to find everything which can be costly. About 4 of the schools I applied to previously didn't manage to compile all my materials before the grad comm convened so i'd recommend gres and transcripts (IF they need hardcopies) even if you haven't worked on the rest of the application materials. OH and give your LOR writers plenty of time. they tend to get busy and forget. One of my LOR came in super late cos his comp crashed. I'd recommend asking your LORs to be submitted like 1.5-2 weeks before deadline so you can still bug them and get it all in by deadline
  4. Jumping in on the bandwagon! Program of Interest: PhD in Social Psych [affective (neuro)science] Schools of Interest: Narrowed down to slightly over 25. Sending e-mails out to POIs and will further cull depending on interactions and feels. Research Interests: 1) perception, regulation and expression of emotions 2) how they impact clinical outcomes and psychopathology Educational Background: B.A. (Psychology) 3.62 gpa Things I'm Not Worried About: Nothing actually. LOL. im worried about everything... Things I'm Worried About: 1) I graduated from a R1 university but I'm an international student. worried about qouta on that 2) My AWA for GREs was 4.0 and having retaken it, it was exactly the same. Afraid that will hurt me (especially cos "i'm not a native english speaker") 3) My LORs come from people who haven't really carved a name for themselves in the field. 1 is an asst prof. another an adjunct prof in a community college. the only one who has solid publications in nature/science etc is a senior scientist who taught 2 modules that i took and cant say much about my research. 4) my UG gpa is 3.62. not. great. 5) lack of publications. I have 1 publication in a low tiered journal (2nd author). 1 poster presentation, 2 oral presentations. my publications were supposed to be the biggest change from last application, but a number of manuscripts got rejected due to them being null (they want us to do further testing, but being a small lab, we're out of funds). 6) my 3rd time applying. my profs say they don't understand why I haven't gotten in based on my research experience. i'm guessing publications are a real make-or-break factor these days.
  5. trololol! i got almost identical emails from a few professors even though i applied a year apart. went back to compare for kicks ????
  6. if you don't mind me hijacking this thread, i scored 162v160q but my awa was 4.0 and i'm worried that my awa is gonna affect my chances, especially since im an international student. I graduated from university at buffalo so I don't need take a toefl despite being an international student. Would taking it perhaps help with my shitty awa score? Does anyone have any insight with regard to that? Appreciate any advice!
  7. So I just emailed a professor and she replied "I am indeed planning on accepting one graduate student this cycle... I look forward to reviewing your application! Best," This isn't far from what i've gotten in the past, despite mentioning that I am keen in discussing her work and my research interests (and i'm worried the outcome will be the same aka rejection). How do you convince them to continue the conversation or is it a hit-and-miss kinda thing? Thanks in advance guys!
  8. what is the subject title you guys use to get the attention of the POIs? ?
  9. I'm wondering the same as well. I scored a 160 on quant but otherwise identical score. an acquaintance of mine who got into purdue mentioned that anything lower than 5.0 might significantly affect chances of getting in to a top tier school ?
  10. I took the gres twice before and got the exact score. Third time around I paced myself over 6months doing the prep with magoosh. I got a 6 point jump on my total putting me in the 90s and 80s percentile. It was difficult juggling both a research job and tryinna study (caffeine pills helped me survive), had to give up my social life. But I think it was worth it. Then again I've not received a single interview or invite so what do I know hahahah :"(
  11. I was thinking we could collate the results on which schools and areas are done with decisions (informal interviews/formal interviews/acceptances). you can copy paste and add on or edit the info! Informal interviews: Berkeley (all depts sent out invites in December) Formal Interview invites: Berkeley (date??) University of Michigan - Ann Arbor (areas? ccn, developmental?) University of Maryland-College Park (clinical?) UNC Chapel Hill (clinical. rest?) Arizona State Uni (clinical) U Penn (clinical?) John Jay (clinical) Fordham (clinical) Northern Illinois University (clinical) NYU (Social) Nebraska-Lincoln (clinical) Acceptances: University of Minnesota (I saw social psych. are the rest out?) Rejections: Berkeley (through website not portal) Carnegie-Mellon (E-mail) UNC (website not portal)
  12. I applied and didn't receive anything, but the results page shows some invitations sent. date seems to be 23rd feb
  13. I'm sorry to hear that. Hope you get something from one of your other choices
  14. oh right. I forget that this isn't the psychology side of the forum. I know both are done for psychology. I didn't get accepted to either
  15. I know Michigan has sent out a number of interview invitations. I assume they are done sending but I might be wrong. I applied to IU-Bloomington as well. Haven't seen any activity so far
  16. Schools done with notifying applicants: 1) Berkeley 2) Carnegie-Mellon
  17. Back-up plan A: Drive uber till I finish the manuscripts I have left with this lab (PI has run out of funds therefore the uber), then apply again next year Back-up plan B: screw it all and jump industry Back up-plan C: enter politics
  18. coming around
  19. And we were just talking about your status as an international applicant! Congratulations!
  20. SAME HERE. many i've spoken to say my profile looks pretty solid (gre, gpa, research exp etc). But i'm worried my international student status is ruining my chances. (apart from the possibility i messed up my SOP or that my recommenders are not well-known).
  21. I know many international students apply and the cohort is rather small. I'm wondering if anyone can chime in on what's the percentage of students who get in, and if you're an international student like me, if you got accepted or rejected and from which schools.
  22. I know what you guys mean. I'm just crossing 30 and i've given up other opportunities to pursue this. I hope it pays of for all of us
  23. Regardless of whether or not I hear from them, nail the interview! (on my behalf ;))
  24. @cyberwulf I'm guessing you probably get flooded with "what are my chances" queries so I hope this comes across as slightly different. I graduated from University at Buffalo with a GPA of 3.62. Seeing how it isn't anywhere near perfect, I am wondering if it is hurting my chances and if my GRE scores of 162V 160Q 4.0W do salvage it or if there is something else I should be doing to help my portfolio. Apart from that I do have research experience over 3 different institutions spanning about 4 years (as locum, RA and RA+Lab manager managing the other RAs), have had poster presentations, talks and (sadly only) one publication (though I have a few more currently under prep). Should I perhaps be looking to do my master's first to help my undergrad GPA? any advice is greatly appreciated!
