  1. I think if you can sum up your experiences and sell yourself well on the SOP you should be good!
  2. I believe that as long as your SOP is super solid (like no grammar, spelling errors etc especially since you are a non-native english speaker) and your LoR writers can vouch for your writing abilities in English, you should not have a problem. Focus on these things you can control for now
  3. I personally used magoosh and brought my verbal and quant scores up by like 6points? unfortunately all 3 attempts, my awa stayed the same. I cant write well without having time to get drunk, writing drunk ? damn ets and their no alcoholic drinks policy
  4. if you dig deep enough there's a link somewhere that a data science guy did up on all the schools, when they sent out interviews etc. last yr I helped start out what became a spreadsheet on which schools were done with invites by when as well. but you might to go further than anyone else has been in a while hahah
  5. my interests are in emotions and how regulation of emotions relates to things! though im applying to affective science/social side
  6. not an expert by far, but strangely, being gay might be easier to work in than your candidacy for ministry. you might wanna work in how you might have faced adversity from being gay and/or how it helps give you a different perspective? Also totally curious as to how the church leadership dealt with your sexuality (being someone who used to serve in ministry a lifetime ago) hahaha. you don't have to respond to that at all and I apologize if that was inappropriate

    Low AW Score

I personally think you should focus on the other areas of your application. Try to make the rest airtight and supplement your awa scores with a strong SOP and/or maybe a writing sample
  8. I don't think you need worry too much about your gres. Your quant is on the slightly lower end. but your verbal and written (especially) should make up for it.
  9. So I just realized that some schools are asking for resume instead of CV. Does it matter that I reformat my CV to fit the resume format, or is it ok to just send in my CV? I feel like my CV captures my academic stuff way better than the resume does though
  10. Im more or less done. just tweaking them for the different schools. also have I mentioned how much I hate it when they tell me I have a 700word limit? But i digress. I'll be happy to look at yours if you'd like
  11. Theres literally a subforum under applications for statements of purpose, personal statement etc
  12. @ChrisChen0820 yeah im applying as well! Applying to psych. I have one saving grace cos my ungrad was from an american university hahah. Have you started on your wes stuff?
  13. So for one school, the prompt was : " a concise statement of previous research experience and of research interests". Another school's prompt was: " Faculty select students who are highly qualified on all admission criteria and who have expressed an interest in research that is congruent with their research programs. Your personal statement should emphasize your research interests and research experience." My POI from this schools mentions "To make your application stand out, please consider spending most of the space in the research statement about the types of questions and experiments you would like to pursue in your graduate training" in her lab website. This makes me think I should just give an expounded CV minus all the backstory on why and how I wanna do what I wanna do? Thanks in advance for any input guys!
  14. Being an international student is tough. Being a chinese international student is some next level shizzle. I've heard that one of the biggest fears faculty/grad comm have about chinese international students is that they're real good at taking tests (some think there's cheating involved) but when the students come down for interviews, the can't speak well, and some cant write well either. Unfortunately for you (and to a lesser extent, me, also an international student) your AWA scores kinda reflect that. So i'd recommend that you get your SOP checked and vet by someone from america (having brought up in a british system, we spell everything 'wrong' ?). Make sure it's a killer SOP and get your recommenders to cover your AWA score. To reflect that you can speak and write well, maybe just not under pressure; but you can definitely articulate your ideas in speech and writing. Hope this helps! (P.S. I assumed you're chinese from the chen in your handle. If i'm wrong, you can disregard the chinese part but the rest prob apply hahahaha)
  15. I'm not in speech pathology but glad to help if you'd like! could always do with another pair of eyes
  16. All the UCs require a SOP and personal history. I get the sense it is meant to be a diversity statement. The prompt I got from the psych dept was "Describe how your background, accomplishments, and life experiences led to your decision to pursue the graduate degree for which you are applying. Include any educational, personal, cultural, economic, or social experiences, challenges or opportunities relevant to your academic journey. In addition, please describe any aspects of your personal background, accomplishments, or achievements that will allow the department to evaluate your contributions to the University's diversity mission. Contributions to diversity and equal opportunity can take a variety of forms, such as efforts to advance equitable access to education, public service that addresses the need of a diverse population, or research that explores inequalities." Hope this helps. I struggled to suss out which belongs in which statement as well. Also if you'd like we can swap statements when you're done anyone else applying to any of the UCs?
  17. Then these faculty do not want to continue the conversation till they get your application materials. Faculty members get so many emails that often they just reply out of courtesy. Yes it helps if a faculty member notices you, but more often than not, you got to get through the grad comm's cut. I've heard applicants get cut even before the faculty interested in working with them gets to review application materials. TL;DR stop panicking. these things are beyond your control. What you can control are things like your SOP, your CV, your writing sample and test scores. Work on those as meticulously as you can, and submit your application in advance. MANY applications get tossed for being incomplete.
  18. Congratulations on applying to this prestigious fraternity of international applicants. We would like to extend our warmest welcome to you! My interests are in emotions and psychopathology. Most of the progs I'm applying to fall under social psych though some progs have affective science as a research area. I see you're applying to cancer biology? How were your GREs? Did you need take the subject test? And how is your SOP comin along? I'll be happy to give your materials a look if you'd like
  19. If you read other threads, you'll realize that when someone asks people to do the work for them, hardly anyone replies. You'll be better off doing some research yourself and asking opinion from those here what they think about your choices compared to asking them to search out schools for you. that said, you have a pretty solid background. So i'd say aim relatively high. all the best
  20. I think if you have specific questions about their work you can go ahead and ask them. Otherwise, I think the only thing you can do is thank them. Most of my replies were more or less that as well. hahahah Don't read too much into it. If you have any more POIs you are going to email, I'd suggest asking them questions about their work and if you could set up a skype call to chat about your research interests. Might help to send you CV as well. But that's if you are starting conversations with POIs you haven't emailed. Hope this helps
  21. I am an international applicant and my awa score was 4.0 as well. It is something to be concerned about as an international student. But hopefully they'll notice your toefl scores. Another thing a POI mentioned during my skype call with her was to make sure your SOP is written really well and free of errors (best to get someone from america to help you read through it. We tend to use words or phrases that are grammatically correct but not commonly used in america that can be a bit weird for them). apart from that, maybe send in a written sample that proves that you can write well. All the best! fingers crossed for you (especially since you an international applicant like me ;))
  22. a number of schools only take the latest whereas others look at both scores (not averaged perse) really depends. usually the prog website states their policy. All the best!
  23. I have come to realize that people in this forum are very friendly and helpful people, but frown upon spoon feeding. You'd realize that seemingly asking to be spoon fed answers generally go unanswered. You'd be better off reading the other threads and asking for help tweaking your email instead of asking what should go into your email
  24. cool cool cool cool cool cool cool cool cool no doubt ?
