Hey there! Thanks so much for your reply. I had the opportunity to speak to a faculty member so I did manage to get some information on the program!

Your should hear today or next week’s end. The person I spoke to mentioned that Dr. Perez would try her best to reach out before the April 15 decision deadline.

Aspire_to_Be reacted to bibliophile222 in Different jobs for grad students
I've had a couple really laid-back, flexible work-study jobs. Last semester I was a TA for an intro course. Most weeks all I did was monitor the class email and either answer questions or forward them to the professor. There were five 1-2 page papers due throughout the semester, so on those weeks I had to grade 62 papers, which was kind of yucky, but the majority of the time I got paid 4 hours a week to do ~20 minutes of work. I didn't have to go to the class or teach, and I could grade whenever it was convenient.
This semester I'm doing RA work with a professor I'm planning on doing a research project with next year. I'm transcribing speech samples (again, I make my own schedule, typically 3-5 hours a week) of toddlers with Williams Syndrome, which is tough but interesting, and it's really training my ear and my IPA abilities! I'm planning on continuing it over the summer too.
Next year I'll be a tutor in the graduate writing center, which is cool because I can get certification as an academic writing tutor, which may look good on future job apps depending on the setting. That will be a bit more work and I can't work from home, but the pay is better and I think it will be interesting.
One of the main reasons I've been so happy with my jobs this year is that I worked for years in retail and food service and was so horribly sick of it, and now it's hit me that I'll never have to work jobs like that ever again! Hurrah!!!

Ah shoot that is quite awkward. I think the first thing you should ask yourself is were under a circumstance where you had no choice but to place a deposit down?
One of my choices basically forced me to decide much earlier than the common April 15 date so I might be in the same predicament as you soon.

I emailed schools I was fairly certain I would be receiving rejections from, because the stakes were low. They had already sent out acceptances and I wasn't invited to interview - just wanted closure. However, for schools I knew I still had a shot at I didn't do it. Didn't want to risk it.

Ahh, California only. That’s super competitive. I actually applied to 3 California locations myself; rejected from CSULA, waitlisted at another and waiting for the last one.
At any rate, I would highly recommend applying to institutions out of state. There are several programs out of state that are exceptional and would even provide funding depending on your application credentials. Be sure to also check out ASHA’s edfind system to really align your credentials with schools’ credentials.

I will PM you as soon as I can @Rezzy S. and @Slpstudent2468 about the program and other information. I might not be able to until tonight or tomorrow depending on my schedule but will tell you both about the program in detail!

Truthfully, I don’t think it’ll affect anything at all. At most, yes, they might remember you and your interest in the program but they wouldn’t put you ahead of other students will excellent qualifications. Nothing to gain, nothing to lose. You should just go but if possible email them to ask if you may speak to someone about the program (that is assuming you don’t know everything about it)

    Hey all,
I will be visiting the UT - Austin campus this Wednesday and will be speaking to someone and discuss the program and possibly get a tour as well. I do have some questions in mind but if anyone wanted to ask anything at all (if not asked already), please let me know and I’ll ask them and post back here what they say ?

Aspire_to_Be got a reaction from bibliophile222 in Undergrad Progression
Well, I’d have to say that it is pretty critical to maintain a high GPA for this major. To the best of my knowledge, a majority of schools really want to see GPAs of 3 or above, especially competitive ones.
I don’t think that’s to say you can’t get in with something lower than a 3 (2.8 at worst) as you have other pieces of your application to speak for you.
Even so, it is quite difficult to be competitive with a low GPA, some professors may seem harsh but they do know what they’re talking about. I remember taking anatomy class and my professor basically said to drop out of the class if you failed the first exam (retake the class).
I have seen plenty of individuals get in with GPAs of 3.0-3.4 but as I said you also have to consider GRE scores, letters of recommendation, etc.
Finally, programs can set criterias of passing and progression grades. For my program, if you don’t get at least a B for some classes, you’re unable to take higher level classes, which honestly makes sense. Things only get more challenging as you progress, if you’re struggling with lower level classes, it’s an indicator that you need to step back for a second and gather some thoughts and decisions of what to work on or do next.

Aspire_to_Be got a reaction from bibliophile222 in Safeties?
Mm, well you should first know that metropolitan locations (CA, NY) will be more competitive. That said, I don’t believe there are necessarily any safety schools in either of these regions. I live in NY so I’m very familiar with the procedures here. Safety schools are largely located in more rural areas such as NC (to my knowledge).
Your overall stats are quite attractive, just be sure to do well in your post-Bach program and you’ll be fine there. Aside from that, you have to put your best foot forward with the GRE exam, it’s a major factor for considering students. Recommendation letters help significantly as well so be sure your professors really know you well and continue that professional relationship with them. Finally, I strongly feel that your statement of purpose defines your application, it’s the part of your app where you demonstrate your personality, ability to write on a graduate level and let the admissions committee know why YOU are a grand fit.
At any rate, google ASHA EdFind. You will be able to search up ASHA-accredited schools (make sure they’re accredited) and find some best statistics on them (admitted students’ average GRE scores, average GPAs, number of admitted students per year, what schools offer in terms of research, programs, etc., and other things). Compare your stats with these, it’s a good indicator of how you’d fare when applying.
Ah and one last thing; don’t be afraid to put yourself out there. There are schools I’ve been accepted to I had 0 hope of getting into and somehow I made it in so don’t underestimate your abilities and always apply for reach schools as well.

Got an acceptance here myself! Although it seems the schools allows only 14 days for a student to decide to enroll or not. Isn’t it universal that all SLP programs give time until April 15? (According to the CAA)
