Holy crap you guys, I just got my schedule for my interview weekend this weekend and I have 8 interviews! Is this normal? I’m meeting with 4 grad students and 3 professors separately for 30 minutes each and my POI for an hour. All in one day!

    And did I mention I’m sick? ?

This sounds insane. LOL I only interviewed with my PI last week, and some other faculty.

I hope you’ve been taking lots of vitamins, drinking orange juice, DayQuil, NyQuil, and all in between. Being in and out of interviews all day is extremely exhausting, I can’t imagine doing that while sick ?

I am still worried not having research experience could be a major drawback in my profile. How do I address this topic in case it comes up in my interview?

This is my first interview as a potential PhD candidate. PI's letter sounded encouraging but I am very nervous about my lack of relevant research experience.

PS: How essential is having research experience or publications to securing an admission for a doctoral program?

Which program is this? Is this a fully or partially funded APA accredited program?

I’ve never heard of a candidate receiving an invite and not having any research experience or at least some degree of research-related skills.

To answer your specific question: For reputable,  fully or partially funded programs that are APA accredited, research experience is essential, not only for admissions, but in order for students to progress through the program successfully. It’s a research-based degree, therefore the experience and foundational knowledge of research is crucial.

Anyone who tells you otherwise is clearly lying and/or severely uninformed re: the amount of rigor, time, and effort necessary to obtain a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology.

  3. So I've officially entered Phase II in this process (Waiting to hear regarding Acceptances/Waitlists/Rejections post-interview). According to most of the schools I applied to, within 1-1 1/2 weeks MAX from interviews is the appropriate time frame to hear from schools, at least with acceptances

ALL THE PRESSURE! ALL THE ANXIETY! HOORAY! IT NEVER ENDS!

Hey! Thanks so much for the reply. That was my understanding too- but I came across that post and was curious!

We'll hopefully see each other at Open House, both tracks attend this! 4 weeks to go! Also, civilian applicants only have one day of interviews, which should be less anxiety producing lol ;)

Hello! I have a question for people who are familiar with USUHS. If you applied for the civilian track, but would consider the military track if not accepted to civilian, should you inform them/ is that even possible? I read on some other forum about someone getting rejected from USUHS civilian but being offered a spot on the military side. Any input/ insight is greatly appreciated!! Thank you!!

I'm very familiar with the program and faculty, and I have never heard of this being the case. Different committees, departments, and agencies within the university work together for the recruitment of civilian vs. military. There are also separate processes involved before the interview specifically for military applicants. The civilian track is very competitive, I've heard about 175+ applications for 1-2 spots every year, at the most. Usually they interview about 12-15 applicants for these 1-2 specific spots. Let me know if you have other questions.

In one of the programs I'm interviewing at, my POI has a strong record of accepting students from inside the lab. I found out one of their current lab members will be interviewing for a graduate student spot at this POIs lab. I really wish this information would have not reached me because now it's really freaking me out. I know this is a situation completely out of my control, and I shouldn't let it affect my mindset entering the interview. However, I cannot help but to feel somewhat discouraged and hopeless. This program is my top pick.

Any advice on how to counteract the negative mindset before going into the interview?

This sucks so much ?. And there’s not much you can do about it. Try not to let these thoughts get to you. Go through the interview day(s) giving it your best effort and gracefully interact with all students/applicants as planned.

This happened to me last time I applied-the PI literally chose the RA already working in her lab. Probably just went through the “motions of the interviews” but wanted her own lab’s RA the whole time... In hindsight, it all felt like a waste of time for everyone involved honestly. Blah.

I’m interviewing with that exact program again this year- Btw. It’s strange and uncomfortable, but the nature of the game.

I'd say yes - but be cautious since academia can be petty, and they'd likely turn you down if you apply again. I would entirely blame it on the cost of travel and tight finances, maybe saying something like, "Thank you so much for reaching out to me. While I would love to interview with your program, after looking more deeply at my current finances, I cannot afford the cost of travel at this time. I am grateful for your time and consideration, and I sincerely apologize for any difficulties this may have caused."

I love this template response. Will definitely be using this for several programs!

  8. PSA: Please do not be that applicant that is overly aggressive during social events.

I met an applicant today who was SO aggressive/controlling of every conversation between applicants and graduate students of the program, she was so exhausting. I’m sure she was doing this to be nice/talkative and not come off as uninterested, but it clearly rubbed me the wrong way. These interviews aren’t supposed to be cut-throat or competitions between applicants, folks.

I would NOT want to this person as a classmate or colleague- I hope I never see her again lol ?

Just got my first rejection after interviewing at a program. I got a call from the director of the program and he explained that they could only accept 4 students from the 6 candidates that interviewed. It really sucks to know that I was one of the bottom 2 ?He also gave me some feedback and said that based on my research interests, they thought I was better suited for a school psychology (which I have applied to as well) or special education program. He also mentioned that if I had the opportunity to get additional research experience, I should. Which sucks because I have 5 summers and 3 years of research coordinator experience. I have two more interviews coming up and now I'm feeling a little nervous about those. Sorry for the Debbie Downer message. Didn't think this would get me so down.

Lots of good energies your way. I'm sorry this was the outcome, I read on here how excited you were about this program.

You have 2 more interviews to kick a$$ at and other programs who think your credentials are amazing. Brush it off, begin preparing for them, learn from your first interview, don't let this get to you!  ❤️

    Advice needed!

Do you guys have experience with updating new publication with the schools that you have applied to? Or is it a good idea at all?

I was noticed yesterday that a manuscript I co-authored with my boss (my letter writer) was accepted in a very good journal. Boss kindly suggested he would like to write emails (copy me) to the schools for an update.

This is something to talk about in your interviews. I think it would be inappropriate to e-mail schools simply about a publication update on your CV.

Is it realistically too late to hear back from schools for interviews at this point? Purdue, Northwestern, and Notre Dame haven't sent out many that I am aware of so far, but it seems too late for the others I applied to (MSU, Wayne, Case Western, Kent State)

All these schools have sent out invites. I've seen them on here and the Results thread.

I saw someone already got an email! Military track applicant. Getting discouraged. :(

    That was me.

I’m almost certain they sent out all their invites today, the department finished reviews last week. I know someone (from a different lab than mine) who received an invite today as well (he received an e-mail after me). Feel free to PM me if you have any other questions, good luck with the rest of your schools

Oh lordy. My partner is going into his last year of postbacc studies for med school (his undergrad was in a liberal arts area). So he'll be applying next fall. We have absolutely no idea how we're going to work out that geographical puzzle. He said he would try to apply to schools near where I get in, but med school is just as much of a crapshoot so I'm encouraging him to apply broadly even if it means long distance for several years. Ugh.

    17 minutes ago, chopper.wife said:

I feel both of you. Having a partner to factor in is so difficult and makes this process even more painful because you are altering another person's life with your decision. I have heard people say to not take into account your partner's preferences with locations, but COME ON... how can you not consider the other person when they are a huge part of your life and support system.

Yep. My partner has been with me through all my undergraduate and post-bac years (trials, tribulations, moves across the country, miseries, highs, lows, all in between)... This has been a wild journey, for the both of us. I will need this support and partnership, on steroids, all throughout grad school LOL

And long-distance sucks so f$%king much, btw, definitely not trying to do that again at all!

Totally overwhelming. It's part of applications/acceptances/rejections that I think often gets ignored/overlooked because of how hard everyone has worked to get to where they are. It can feel so trivial to be distressed about moving away or finding a new place to live within your means, but GOOD GRIEF am I ever emotionally drained thinking about it all.

Especially when you have a partner, who also has a career... and so you're juggling/considering a million things at once, because any decision directly impacts his/her career.

I TOO AM SO MF EMOTIONALLY DRAINED, let me wrap up these interviews lord I can't have anxieties in so many directions at once lmfao ?

Sorry for the slightly off-topic post, but I feel like all the different kinds of anticipation I have been carrying around with me and the stress about schools, moving, etc. has been a lot.

I guess I'm just uncomfortable with the state of not knowing where I'm going to be physically located and where I'll need to try to put roots down. It's like I'm in limbo and I hate being in a constant state of transition.

Same here. Some mornings I feel great, by the afternoon I feel like $h!t at the thought of not knowing. I'm looking forward to being somewhere for 4-5 years, but packing/moving somewhere new, with people I don't know, and having to develop trust and relationships with a whole new crew all over again is.... overwhelming.

How do you respond if you receive invites to more than one program and have to turn down your fake "first choice" school?

    9 hours ago, higaisha said:

Tell any choice they're your top choice at any opportunity possible. PCE

I'm letting every. single. program. know they are incredible/amazing/my top choice (without really explicitly using the word "top choice"). Periodt. I'll have already spent $300-$400, per interview, at the end of this whole damn process.

I’ve wondered about this too- I applied civilian. I know DOD isn’t affected at this point- but that’s stressful that your PI said that ?. Any more insight? Ugh. I wonder if it’s too late to switch tracks ????

All we can do is wait and see when the Russian agent will decide to re-open the government. I'm almost certain faculty will still process apps/interview civilian track, with hopes that by March all issues regarding funds are sorted out.
