That’s so odd, I’m not sure how I would react since it’s really not too hard to at least reply with something like “it was nice to meet you.” I’m assuming it’s been a while since you emailed them. Hopefully it didn’t damper your confidence.

Oh not at all, according to my PIs (who helped me draft the thank you emails) it was totally normal for them not to respond. One of the ones who didn’t respond offered me an acceptance ? so I didn’t take it too personal!

So my interview weekend went great I thought. I emailed my POI to say thanks the next day and she hasn’t responded, and now I’m second guessing everything. Ugh, lol.

4/5 I’ve emailed never answered. I left it very vague at the end though, so I wasn’t expecting a response...... still awkwardly stings though LOL. Like uhhhh I thought we had a connection!?!? ? ?

Good morning, another potential acceptance/rejection/waitlist day....

    ???

    This.

One of the faculty for a top program I interviewed with told me I should expect to “hear from them soon....” immediately after interview day....... it’s been radio silence, going on 3 business days. LOL. I’m counting the hours. How soon is soon! What am I waiting for exactly?!?!?!!!!!!!

Stop playing with my emotions frfr ?

So my PI that I RA for is basically the head professor of our psych department and told me to ask both the faculty and grad students. So obviously the faculty stated what I said in the first post. The grad students corroborated that they hadn't had any issues whatsoever with funding but you have to actively seek it out and it's very competitive. The only thing is that it's hard because even though that's the case now, you never know what it will be like in the future since you will be actively working within the program for multiple years to come and you never know when funding will suddenly disappear. So it's nice when you actually have a guarantee of funding rather than a nonchalant "well so far we've been fine" if that makes sense lol.

Eh... If it was my only offer, I'd still go for it. If there are other programs with guaranteed funding through writing, then I may pick them instead. You have to list your pros/cons for each school and make the best decision for you.

What is your opinion on schools that don't necessarily guarantee funding but state that every student thus far has been funded every year?

What did the grad students say about this? This would’ve been a good question to gather diff perspectives on from interviews. I interviewed at one particular program who said this, but all grad students corroborated that it was true and they have all been fully funded to date without any issues (across cohorts!).

I relate to this so much! I seriously pulled out my phone and made LinkedIn connections right there with a lot of the people I met so I could follow their career and, who knows, possibly collaborate with them in the future :) Always a pleasure to meet so many talented individuals with similar interests!!!! Thanks to all the fellow applicants that made my interviews that much more enjoyable!

I wish I would've thought of this!!! Definitely going to do this for my remaining interviews

I have a nose ring and a lip piercing. I plan on taking out the lip piercing and keeping in the nose ring, as I feel like those are more common. I don't want to completely surprise them with two piercings suddenly appearing if I do get accepted! For first impression's sake, however, I want to tone down just a bit.

I met students (and applicants!) with nose (dots and more bull-ring like), lip, and tongue rings, at multiple interviews last week. They looked awesome and the faculty didn’t care. I’d say do you!

Yusss those are the best!! I had something similar over Skype--the POI was basically trying to sell me the program/get me to work for them. Received an unofficial offer of acceptance two days later haha I hope that's the same for you :)

    That’s so AWESOME!!!! ? Congratulations!

It’s funny because when debriefing with other applicants, their interview experiences were completely different.

Btw- I literally just had one of the PIs e-mail me (we interviewed just yesterday) so I definitely feel like good/memorable impressions were made!!!! Cheers to us, I am literally rewarding myself at every little milestone of this brutal process ??❤️❤️

I know TONS of clinical programs have their interviews this weekend. That said, I want to send all the best vibes to everyone for their interviews!!! You've worked really hard to get to this point, and this is your chance to really blow them away! BUT don't forget to breathe and enjoy meeting the people who will most likely be your colleagues or collaborators in the future. Also, remember to assess how well the program fits YOU. Good luck everyone!!

❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ I can’t like this, reached my limit for the morning apparently LOL

How did everyone’s big weekend go? It feels like SO many incredible programs had interviews this weekend. I went to 2 back to back and honestly LOVED both programs and their students ?????

  10. I think there’s a Bioengineering thread on here, I would recommend for you to use the search tool and see what comes up. There’s probably similar applicants in your field on here writing about their their invites through this process.

I would love to give you specific advise, but I do think the social sciences are different ? Congratulations on your invite!!!! Stanford is BEAUTIFUL!

...If the students don't seem welcoming during your visit and instead seem exhausted and unhappy, then perhaps whatever is happening behind the scenes isn't great.  If questions about certain aspects of the program are ignored or responded to with the same cookie cutter sounds good response then perhaps there is another side of the story that would significantly impact your decision.

    This. SO important.

  12. Congratulations on your acceptance.

Since the option was offered, I don’t think it will hurt your chances whatsoever. Have you visited the campus before? If not, then I would really try to make a way to attend.

If you have already visited, simply write a polite, thank you e-mail, but express that due to other commitments, you won’t be able to make it in-person (but you’re delighted to chat over phone or Skype). Good luck!

Also older and unconventional (this is a.... third career for me.....) I actually use my variety of jobs as one of my biggest "strengths" when asked in interviews because it means I've worked with folks from such very diverse backgrounds. Plus, I always have great stories to share when I need to make small talk :)

I've also found that being more experienced/older means that I am not nervous AT ALL on interview days. It's easy to pick out the inexperienced folks because they look so uncomfortable in their suits and aren't quite sure how to conduct themselves.

    +1 on this.

Just completed 2 back to back interviews, on my way to the next- Had such a wonderful time!!!!!

Confidence was over the roof and the interviews didn't even feel like interviews at all. No questions about my experience whatsoever. Honestly felt like the faculty were trying to sell me the program/area, they did the majority of the talking! ?

Also, to the folks saying that you shouldn't pursue a PhD or even a PsyD if you're interested in a practice-oriented career, you are seriously misguided. 50% of graduates from clinical PhD programs go on to do full-time clinical work. We need good clinicians with good scientific training, and many of those folks come from PhD programs.

I don’t know where you are getting your information from (Can you provide a citation on this figure?), but you’d be setting someone up for failure by telling them to pursue a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology if they simply want to do pp/“full time clinical work.” Even in AMCs or integrated healthcare settings (VA, state hospitals, private hospitals, etc.), most individuals with such credentials are assigned administrative roles, teaching roles, etc., which would not allow them to engage in “full time clinical work.”

The majority of reputable, competitive Ph.D. programs in clinical psychology would outright reject applicants who would even communicate such an interest at interviews or even their SOPs, as clinical psychologists are not simply psychotherapists. For those who are interested in a practice-oriented career, there are plenty of rigorous LMSW/MSW/MHC counseling programs that provide scientific training at least in EBP (UT Austin, UPenn, etc.).

Please be careful about disseminating incorrect information on here- numerous doctoral-level forums across the Internet have addressed this topic in depth. This isn’t the first time someone has posted a similar question on the Internet re: graduate studies in clinical psychology ;)

Well.. Going to my first interview on Friday and am suddenly feeling freaked out despite feeling totally calm all week. All of a sudden questioning if I have read enough of my POIs papers, worried I wont have anything original to add to what they are working on, etc.

Going on 3 over the next week and I may just........ pass out from exhaustion lol. This process is so brutal and demandinggggggggggggg, let me in already damn it!!!!!!

  16. Every time I read some of these "What are my chances..." posts on here, my recommendation is almost always the same: Step 1- Begin reading this guide.
If you still believe a Ph.D. or Psy.D. is the best degree for you (vs. a practice-oriented, LMSW/MHC route, which in my opinion would be the most appropriate for your interests and career goals, based on what you disclosed), move on to: Step 2- Purchasing the following book. Both give you a solid foundation to start with.

I don’t really know what I’m asking for but I am freaking out a bit over my upcoming interview at my DREAM school. I’m fangirling over my POI and the more I prep, the more giddy I get. I know to be excited and flattered about my interview- and I am! It’s a huge compliment! But I’m also nervous and know odds still aren’t in my favor. I have a somewhat unconventional background, and that worries me. I mean, my POI knows that, but still. I’m older than a lot of applicants, and this is my second cycle, and I just don’t know that I’d apply again. I mean, maybe. But either way- I feel like it’s all I think about! And the interview has gotten my hopes up.

Ah. I just want to interview tomorrow and be like tell me on the spot!!!

Older, unconventional background applicants unite!!!!! WOHOOO! We have sooooo much, real life experience to talk about (vs. younger applicants, straight out of undergrad)- use it to your favor! Tie in stories, experiences with patients + any other unique, life experiences that sparked your curiosity, and make the faculty (and ultimately PI) REMEMBER your stories!

This is what one of my advisors told me, and I’m honestly sooooo pumped! ? You are going to do amazing, they picked you to interview for a reason- stop over thinking it!!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Has anyone heard back from Kentucky post-interview?? My anxiety is so high right now waiting to hear anything

Usually schools notify within 1 1/2 weeks post-interview. At least all of mine do (Which is extremely anxiety producing!). According to the PIs I work with, faculty meet almost immediately after interview(s) to select their candidates and send out offers
