I don't know much about those schools, but I do know it is more than possible to get in with your GPA. In addition, all your outside activities and research experience will really help you in the application process. While others may not agree with me, I've found that a lot of schools accept people with scores/grades that don't always reach their standards because they really want a student based on essay/outside experience. Many thought my list of top schools was crazy (I applied to 8, 7 of which are in the top 30 schools) but I will begin my first day at Northeastern tomorrow. This will sound cheesy but if you really want a school, then go for it. It never hurts to add safeties but you have a lot of experience outside of school that schools want. Good luck!

Do prerequisite courses carry more weight?
laura120 replied to futurespeechpath1's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I wouldn't say that they necessarily count more but you should aim to do well in all. I know that probably wasn't what you wanted to hear but many schools require different prerequisite so it's hard to know which ones you'll need to demonstrate higher grades in. The best thing to do is try to get your major classes higher than your general ed requirements and check to make sure you meet the grade requirement the school needs from you for that class. Hope this helped! -
How many times did you take the GRE?
laura120 replied to mckennahslp's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I took it twice with the intention of improving my score the second time but I did worse. It's a general test so for the most part, it's difficult to improve your score by that much. Also, it's true that it is a small thing that factors into your acceptances/rejections if you have outside experiences to help boost you. -
Applying to grad schools this upcoming semester!!
laura120 replied to lily_slp's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
For interviews, most questions are directed towards why you chose this profession and where you want to take it. This includes knowing your research about the schools you're applying to and knowing what you can bring to the program. My GRE's were below average because I didn't study as much as I should have but my interview was the deciding factor for my admission for the school I'm attending this fall. Best advice is to look up sample questions and research the programs so you're ready to answer questions. Good luck!- 9 replies

@speechieontherun I’m not asking that you sugarcoat it. I’m asking that you don’t comment at all if you are unable to support other students. There is a difference between being realistic and being cruel. Please get off grad cafe.
-
@speechieontherun the way you commented on posts is not supportive of other students. If you don’t mind me asking, have you received admission to a graduate program this fall? Because whether you have or have not, this is not an environment of disencouragement.

So I started the FB page but then no one joined so I deleted it. But if anyone else wants to make one and try, that'd be great!

Hi, I will be attending Northeastern in the fall and I am also interested in literacy. If literacy is what you want to do, I know Northeastern has required courses in literacy for the entire first year of the masters and there is a literacy lab. I don't know much about BU but I will say that if you are looking to work with children on literacy, Northeastern has great classes and resources for that. Hope that helps!

Fear of not getting in anywhere
laura120 replied to SLP_2019's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I am in the same boat. I applied to eight (most of which are competitive) and have been rejected by one as well. It's very easy to become overwhelmed with anticipation and concern. The important thing to remember is that even if you didn't get into a school you believed was a safety, it might not be because you weren't a good candidate. It may be because they feel that their program just isn't the right fit for you. I'm not the kind of person who believes in fate but this process has really forced me to believe in having faith. The right school for you will choose you in return. And if you don't get in this year, you'll grow from that experience and have a better understanding of applying the following year. The waiting period is tough and I know this sounds cheesy but the best thing you can do is believe in yourself and your ability to be successful in this field. Good luck! -
