*I is stressed* venting thread for Fall 2020 Applicants

I work for the PI at my top choice school. I just had a meeting with him and another tomorrow. It is taking ALLLLLL my self control to not be like JUST TELL ME NOW! According to CUDCP the school will send out invitations this week. So I don't know why he doesn't just give me the inside scoop (I do actually know why, but I'm like come on, I wrote your NIH grant proposal). It is agony seeing him almost every day and just smiling and being like "Hi Dr. XYZ! Hope you're having a SUPER day!"

FML. I think I'll likely just crack and demand answer. Probably the surest way into the program. ?

Also, real talk, I'm not quite sure how I'll handle working here if I don't get an interview ?

Yeah... that can be so awkward for the first month or so. Just remember not to be salty towards the newcomer and keep your head up for the next cycle! That will demonstrate resilience and interpersonal skills.

Haha this made me lol.

And it's a good way to think about it. Hopefully I can find the resilience and interpersonal skills buried somewhere. All my skills are going towards acting calm.

I got an interview at the school I work at last year, but got waitlisted, and ultimately, never accepted. And for the most part it DOES suck. I was a little embarrassed, but everyone in my lab (PI and phd students) were sooo supportive and if anyones going to understand it's them.

That's really hard. I mean, I think I would find a way to deal (I love the lab and the work I'm doing), but my PI reached out to me and strongly encouraged me to apply for the job after I got rejected from the school last year. So I think it would just be super confusing as well. I was feeling relatively calm and confident, and then I remembered I had no guarantees and that I actually have no clue what is going to happen, so I have been kind of silently freaking out lately.

Hi, minor question here. I have an interview on Jan 23-24 and still haven't received information about housing, even though the initial invite (extended in December) said the faculty that invited me would make those arrangements. Is it too soon to contact the admissions office and ask about this? In the case that someone forgot to make my arrangements, I don't want to wait too much longer and make them scramble to make super last minute accommodations. Should I contact them now, or maybe wait until Wednesday so it's just a week until my visit?

I wouldn't stress too much either way. Ohio State didn't give me info regarding who I'd be staying with until the Monday before!! Four days!

 

I think you could totally reach out whenever and just politely inquire as to whether you need to make arrangements or not.

For one school I interviewed at, they sent me info on who I would be staying with on Tuesday when they knew I was flying in on Thursday. I would try to wait if you can.

I agree with people saying do not inquire yet. Maybe wait until next week.

Figured I'd post in here since I know I'm overreacting but still want to get this off my chest

I will be on crutches for one of my interviews  I am planning on attending the pre-interview social and the post-interview happy hour as well, and I'm worried about sticking out like a sore thumb or not being able to walk around/mingle due to this, and consequently making a bad impression. I am hoping and praying it doesn't hider me through the interview! I already know this sounds crazy, but I just needed to get it off my chest. This will probably be one of the only schools I get an interview at, so I'm really hoping to make the best impression possible!

1) If you’re taking a flight at the airport, I’d recommend calling the airline and requesting wheelchair escort service – having to walk through long corridors in crutches is going to be a rough time.

2) If you haven’t already, let your interview coordinator/contact person know that you’ll be in crutches so they can arrange accommodations for you. My guess is that you’ll be able to sit down during the social events, and current students will be the ones coming to you to chat.

Also, no need to stress about attending in crutches – if anything, I believe this can work in your favor by showing the interviewers and graduate committee that you were willing to attend and participate to the best of your ability despite healing from an injury or surgery. So, I really think this is will make you stand out *in a positive way* ?

Totally agree. As long as you make an effort (which I'm sure that you will since you seem worried about it) I'm sure that they will be understanding and it may even work in your favor because it shows how dedicated you are.

So...while I should continue to be optimistic about hearing back from schools, that is taking too much energy out of me so instead I'm researching plan B's, C's, and D's...all the way to Z. 

How's everyone else faring?

I'm already ready for applying again next year XD. I was lucky enough to find out why I was not invited to interviews from a few faculty members (which led me to believe I'm pretty screwed for all of the clinical science model programs I applied to), and I kinda know what can be fixed the next time around. I think it's a great idea to have two or three well-rounded back-up plans, because apparently even getting into a doctoral program does not mean everything will turn out as expected. Crap happens, and the distress will be almost intolerable if we do not see another way out. It never hurts to get some more options than putting all eggs in one basket.

LOL being prepared for next year actually isn't a bad idea, I personally should start studying for the GRE now

I'm hoping within the next couples of weeks I can email some of my top POI's and thank them for previous correspondences and let them know I plan on applying next year because that can't hurt right? 

I have been doing some post-bacc research just because it seems like a good time being able to leave my home town for a summer/semester, but I'm not too sure how beneficial that will be hahaha. I don't have a bad set up right now, one part time job for money and one part time paid research position for money and well research. @Schy AMEN... on so many levels.  I have also been thinking about how I am going to put way more time into studying for the GRE and kill that silly exam the next go-around (even though several of my programs haven't even begun to send out interview invites yet).  This application process is such a bizarre experience.  We all may have to do research on it when we finally get into our dream programs!

So I emailed a school that has already sent out interview invites for an upcoming interview to ask about my application status. They told me that there is a chance that more applicants could be interviewed depending on how the interview weekend goes in February. How often do they actually interview more people?? I'm kinda stressed? Like I almost would rather just know if it's a rejection already.
