mmh96 Posted March 5, 2020 Posted March 5, 2020 hey everyone, it's my first post on here. I've been lurking for quite a long time. I just want to say thanks to this forum, I checked my ACORN account last night and saw I was invited. Just got my official acceptance from the Munk school about an hour ago with a $5,000 scholarship. I'm completely shocked! I'm from a small town in the southern US. I never thought I would get into a school like UofT, lol. Congratulations to everyone else! I hope to meet some fellow Munk students on here later this year. coffeeandeducation, Hawkmoon, Endzone98 and 2 others 5

From what I've read of Munk, $5k is about the most they ever give out, so that's a pretty damn high bar you've hit. mmh96 1

Now I begin the search for a big loan, haha. Does anyone know about UofT's collaborative master's specializations? I applied for the Contemporary East/Southeast Asian Studies specialization, but not sure when/if I'll hear anything back about that. Edited March 5, 2020 by mmh96

Between TAship, RAship, and entrance scholarships, I'm getting about $19.5k this year. EDIT - like I said yesterday: Edited March 6, 2020 by theGoodGhosts Hawkmoon 1

Boudibou123 Posted March 6, 2020 Author Posted March 6, 2020 NPSIAs applicants: i just got my funding info, says I have around 5.5K in teaching assistant! question for you all, I also got 6.5K as a ' research scholarship' and 3.5K as a 'departmental scholarship 2'. So from what I understand, I got 10K in scholarship as well as 5.5K as a Taship for a total of about 15K, but I got no RaShip. Am I correct? Is research scholarship the same as RaShip? trying to understand to difference between these ! Hawkmoon 1

Is research scholarship the same as RaShip? trying to understand to difference between these ! The "Research Scholarship" is sort of like an RAship. Kailey Wright explained it to me yesterday: "It is a scholarship associated with work with a faculty for one semester @ 10 hours a week or two @ 5 hours a week. You will be contacted by your assigned faculty member directly to determine how you would like to allocate this. It is different from an RA position because you are not necessarily paid on a fixed hourly rate, it is a lump sum scholarship that is disseminated to you in installments. For example, if you choose to work 10 hours for one semester, you would receive four installments over the semester (Sept., Oct., Nov., Dec.) to the total amount of your scholarship, or eight installments for the full year." dag17 Posted March 6, 2020 Posted March 6, 2020 Hi! Congrats! I got my acceptance today too. Haven’t heard anything about the collaborative specialization yet, although I’m a little stressed because I didn’t submit any supplemental documents or letters in my application because I wasn’t sure we were supposed to. Well, I hope not haha. Good luck!

In my statement of interest, I just mentioned that I wanted to apply for the specialization and mentioned my research interests in East Asia. so I don't think you had to submit additional forms! Also congratulations! Edited March 6, 2020 by mmh96 dag17 1
Gradaffairs Posted March 6, 2020 Posted March 6, 2020 Hi all! Lurker over here :) accepted you NPSIA and Munk. Question, do any of you knows what are the deferral policies of both program? Is it possible to defer admission for a year (i.e. 2021) in either of them? where can I find that info? thanks!

I would recommend reaching out to the admin of both schools, because it may be decided on the case-by-case basis.
HN19 Posted March 7, 2020 Posted March 7, 2020 Hello guys, It is a glorious coincidence that I got the rejection letter from Munk and acceptance letter from UBC on the same day. Anyone here who has applied for MPPGA? I am not sure about the funding opportunities there (I am a domestic student) and would like to get some more information.

Munk typically allows for deferrals. I don't believe npsia does generally but I hope if someone had a good reason they'd consider it.
