Rejection woes.....

I feel your pain(s)! I applied to 12 programs, and so far I've only gotten four rejections. The first one stung the most, but after it I feel like I've gotten more desensitized to the others. Also, it is kind of dirty when they send the rejection letters TWICE, like you didn't see it the first time. I got a duplicate rejection letter of one I received last week. Blah.

Let me guess, that was Texas A&M that sent two rejection letters?

Seeingeyeduck said it well and comprehensively.

None of my schools are fall back options, so I've got my fingers crossed for 1/11! So, far three rejections. As an aspiring writer I have actually mentally trained myself to like rejections -- it just adds fuel to the fire.

There is plenty of applicable fortune cookie wisdom:

"Failure is not the falling down, but the staying down"

"Fishing: if it were easy, they'd call it catching"

"Diligence is the mother of good fortune"

This would all be true if you didn't have to pay +-100 every time you apply

Starting to wonder why I am putting myself through this torture.  Worst case scenario...I'll get no acceptances, start a new career, and stop being poor.  I can totally live with that.

That's a good way to look at it!

Also an advantage!

goood point, but it's like going to the casino -- gotta consider the money gone for the experience from the outset

Haha, good point. Too bad they don't incorporate some flashing lights and cool sounds throughout the admissions application. Maybe even a bonus spin on a waived app fee?!?

Just as I hoped I would one day contribute to the acceptance thread, I now am contributing my rejection woes to this thread.

Last Friday, I received my first notification, which was also an acceptance(USC). I was thrilled, but wanted to wait for notifications from other schools.

Saturday morning, I wake up at 9am to see that an email from UCLA arrived. I was surprised to see an email so early, as UCLA is notorious for sending notifications very late. Blah blah blah, we cannot offer you admission at this time, much competition, so sorry, etc.

Surprisingly, I was not that upset. UCLA and USC are rival schools, and very different from each other. While I was writing my SOP, I had a feeling my ideas would appeal to the ambiance of USC - but, seeing that UCLA was higher-ranked and less expensive, I figured I would take a shot and apply.

If there's one thing I learned from this, is that I would much much much rather receive an acceptance before any rejections. After reading my rejection letter, I shrugged and said, "Oh well, already have been accepted somewhere else!"

Got my first rejection today, the first decision to be exact. So I don't have any acceptance and it definitely is bothering me now. When the decisions start off with bad news they can really suck the hope out of you. Although I wasn't very hopeful with this school, but this rejection is making me skeptical about the other schools I was hopeful with.. lets see..

Another good tip is to email the departments and ask what was weak about your application, so that you can address those issues the next time you apply, if you end up needing to reapply next season.

Is this something you should do?  Email the department after being rejected to find out why the hell you weren't good enough? Just curious...

I don't know if this helps at all. I actually have not been rejected at all this time around (fully funded at 4 and waiting on the last one), but this isn't my first time around.

Last year, I applied to probably 10 programs and was rejected from all of them (well, I got waitlisted at one. Woo?). BUT. And this is the point. It was probably the best thing to ever happen to me (despite the large amount of money wasted).

I got a job which isn't ideal, but I think it gave me some real world experience that stood out on my resume. I also started working with a new prof doing research, and I was really able to discover what I wanted to do (get an idea at least. Does anyone ever know?). I also am getting the chance to travel, which I wouldn't have had before. I just feel much better prepared and have a better sense of purpose.

Of course, the application process is never fun, BUT there is hope :)

I have 2 rejections and 2 schools that just never contacted me. I only have a handful of programs left, with low, low acceptance rates. I've pretty much resigned myself to not getting in this year. T_T

University of Illinois said no today=(

I received two rejections yesterday within a couple of hours of each other--Iowa and Illinois! Illinois was a top choice :(.  I received my Iowa rejection 10 minutes before my interview for NIU and did not do well. They implied that they were interviewing me because my interests didn't fit theirs. I'm assuming I'm rejected at those 3 places and another school that did interviews and did not offer me one. PRAYING that at least one of my remaining 6 schools will accept me! It is heartening to see people here that have been rejected, even to most of their schools, and been accepted. It just takes one acceptance, right?

You just never know. I applied last year and was outright rejected at two programs that had higher acceptance rates and waitlisted at another school that only had 4-5 spots for out of province (I'm from Canada) applicants and assuming <10% chance. It just takes one acceptance. Good luck!

Can I just mention how getting rejected after an interview completely sucks??? Yes, bring me to see how wonderful the program is then tell me I can't have it. :( Bummin today.

Yes! I feel you on this one. So I technically haven't been rejected yet. I've been accepted three places and am a candidate for admission at another. I've interviewed for GA positions with three of the schools, and I haven't heard back yet. But I feel you on the "pay for a plane ticket out here... look at how wonderful our program is... now we might not let you come here. Sorry!"
