Rejection woes.....

Can I just mention how getting rejected after an interview completely sucks??? Yes, bring me to see how wonderful the program is then tell me I can't have it. :( Bummin today.

It sucks so bad! Especially when it's your dream school and you foolishly let yourself get your heart set on it when you know the post-interview acceptance rate is only 50%. And then, after you get the decision, you follow up with a PI you had a great conversation with and he says he was looking forward to having you rotate in his lab in the fall. So you know you were this close, but your best just wasn't enough... I'm so grateful that I have other great offers that I can get myself excited about, otherwise I'd be so devastated right now. Life goes on, and I'd like to think it just wasn't meant to be, but, yeah, this is definitely the low point of this whole process. :/

Definitely how I things went with me and Dartmouth :/ I'm just trying to count my blessings that I even have offers. I'm also lucky to be passionate about a field that will pay my way through school, which is huge.

It also seems like there are more post interview rejections this year or is it just me?

Well, I can't say I've really looked at years past, but I'd be surprised if the numbers were really that different. I will say that I don't see many people talking about rejections over on the biology forum, but I think most people probably use forums like this to do that.

I've been rejected by 3 out of my 5 schools. There comes a point where you seriously just stop thinking about the possibility of getting accepted at all and just move on. Granted it was fine...until school #3 (who is ranked lower than schools 4 and 5) rejected me. Guess not this year.

I finally got my first notice and since I'm posting in this forum, you can probably guess what it was. I'm super bummed and feel like I won't make it this app season. I know it's not the end of the world if I receive no acceptances this season, but it still sucks. I have 3 schools left and 2 of them have already told me I'm in their maybe pile and should be hearing back soon. I loved all the schools I applied to, so I'm really hoping for just one. Just one little yes....

One more rejection. Applied to seven schools and so far two rejections and not a single good news. I am literally getting seriously worried now cx I have made the mistake of applying to good schools only.. no safe schools .. Big Mistake .. !!

I was rejected after an interview at my top choice last year (and accepted to the same this year!)

When I was bummin last interview season, this flowchart made me feel better somehow...

8 out of 11 rejections! WOO! It's a party!

LOL I laughed way too much at that. I'm sorry man! Keep your head up -- a lot of MFA programs (especially the ones you're applying to) are tough to get into.

I just got my first rejection a couple of days ago from a school I considered a safety. Merp. :/

My safety school rejected me then told me that if I applied under a different professor I would have gotten in for sure (which I had known before I applied), and I just found out recently that I could then switch into something I actually wanted to do after being accepted. It's so weird... The professor who would have accepted me knew I wanted to do AI, but thought I should cheat the system like this anyway!

It's OK. That school was my absolute last choice anyway. :P

This process sucks. Am just praying one program sees my potential. So far in this lovely month of March the rejections have been coming in! So thats why they took so long- only to tell us NO! I only wish as they send out interview they could let those who aren't making it know :s So far University of Chicago is a NO, Johns Hopkins is a NO but yes to Masters, Depaul is a NO, I am guessing Loyola is a no as their response when I asked was we sent out an email. Alas

My rejections have been actually been pretty okay.

  • I got rejected from Rockefeller first, which was unsurprising but I got a very nice letter.
  • Then I got rejected from U Penn, which sucked because it was my number one choice, but not surprising since everything that could go wrong my application did. The only thing that sucked was that I got rejected while in the middle of an interview at another school, which I guess is the best case scenario?
  • I just laughed when I got rejected from Boston. It sucked since I thought I was definitely going to get in at least to the Masters program, but it wasn't all that surprising. I would keep forgetting that I applied there and when I did remember I couldn't recall if I applied to Boston College or Boston University. I'm pretty sure that not remembering which school I applied to is a good reason to get rejected, so no hard feelings.

Now the waiting is killing me. I keep getting good news indirectly, but I haven't heard from my remaining schools yet. AHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey! You applied to Kent and Aberystwyth, too?   I've been accepted to both for Creative Writing...do you know if Kent will notify us of funding? I'm American, so I'm used to our system, which I think is different from over there..

Hello PdH, yes! They will notify you of funding and all scholarship opportunities. I am American too and every school that I applied to forward me funding and scholarships to apply to! They were extremely nice about it :)

Got my second rejection today. This one hurts a little more.

I applied to some far-reach schools that I'm not expecting to get into (Stanford, UCLA, UCSD), but UC Davis was within my reach (I had the exact stats they were looking for!). UC Davis has a great program, in a great little town. I knew I wasn't a traditional student, but was hoping they could see my passion and other great qualities. Unfortunately I received my rejection earlier this morning :( I'm feeling really bummed about it... more so than if/when I'm rejected from my far-reach schools. I want to feel happy for the admits, but I'll need to shake off this "woe is me" feeling first...

Yep, like the other person said, they should let you know if there is anything available. I had to interview with a panel for funding, and then I didn't get it, so I'm likely not going there! :)

I know exactly how you feel! My first rejection was a highly ranked institution, in a field that I've never studied, so it was a long shot. This last one was not highly ranked and I was pretty sure I'd get in, but they decided that my topic didn't fit well enough with their supervisors. It hurts more when you feel like you should have been accepted!

Laughter is a great response for this. I appreciate your kind words too.

I'm up to 10/11. Indiana is my last hope for this go around. I'm not discouraged though -- I knew what I was in for the whole time. A writer who doesn't like rejections will go as far as a skater who doesn't like falling on his ass.

They can't stop me and I'm keeping count :-)
