Had such a strange interview yesterday. It truly defined the concept of “best fit” for me. I left there feeling ok with that rejection. Starting to get nervous as I have 2 interviews left  and the program I felt I was the best fit for waitlisted me after interviewing.

This process has been so exhausting, it’s my second application round and now I’m battling the flu. I don’t know if I can do this a third time. How do people stay motivated?

I feel your pain. I guess how I stayed motivated was I saw incremental progress through each cycle

    1st: no interviews 5 programs

    2nd: 3 interviews 10 programs

    3rd 9 interviews 4 acceptances 20 programs

also it’s important to maybe apply to programs that’s aren’t as ideal as fully funded to raise your chances of getting in

Hi everyone! For those who have had to reject an offer, how did you word that email? If I'm lucky enough to get multiple offers, I'm worried about how to reject (especially since the field I'm going to be in is super small and collaboration with POIs is very likely)

This is strange to think about when you don’t have multiple offers but for me it depends.

if the POI called or emailed me, I focused on a compassionate email.

if the head of the program sent out a cookie cutter email, I was more straight to the point “thank you so much” “ I thought about this very hard” “while this program was one of my top choice, I actually was lucky enough to obtain an offer from my top choice”

stuff like that. I feel like the phone call is the hardest. If a POI Calls you don’t reject the offer at that moment. Even if you made your decision, take a day or two to triple check your decision is the right one for you. Give the POI respect

  3. One thing (academic wise) I want to do Now that I’m in the in between period is create a framework of the studies done in my research field (masculinity). I want to try to get access to some articles I always wanted to have during my thesis that can really paint the picture of the field. In addition, my new Mentor has a secondary research interest that I’m not too well versed in. I obtain 5 articles revolving around that area and I’ll prob read them through the next couple months. I know vacation and mental relaxation sounds great but my brain needs to work too lol

  4. Ahhhh this is truly brutal. Waitlist suck and it seems like programs are adding more people into the waitlist so it’s not like if your on the waitlist, your the next up. rather now they allow 2-3 waitlist people for one POI. I wish you guys the best!

  5. Option 1 is my choice personally. Especially if you aren’t determined to make it in academia I think the hands off mentoring style is fine because you won’t need that much guidance week to week. And then you mentioned location and stipend are better. That’s your outside life right there.

overall, I see option 1 is the clear choice

I'm currently waiting on funding information as well and I don't know why but it is making me anxious all over again. I had a nightmare I wouldn't receive any funding at all and I was somehow required to pay for the tuition myself. Needless to say, I need to do something fun that will get my mind off of all of this. I feel relieved and ecstatic that I was admitted into one of my top 3 choices, however, I still feel the slightest bit of anxiety. I hope you're all doing better than me :)

We aren’t lmao I held three offers and the POIs that chose me all knew each other. I kept feeling the longer I wait, they might make the decision for me or worse, all might pull their offers and tell me to F*ck off hahaha. Clearly my anxiety got the best of me.

But honestly I am kind of jealous of you being able to hold out till you got the funding information. I made my decision based on fit and knowing the programs history of full funding all its prior students. But you never know how the next year will go. I guess I am putting a lot of trust in the program ??‍♂️

Has anyone heard from the University of New Mexico or from Northwestern at Evanston? I know they both have March interview dates and was curious if anyone had gotten an interview. Thanks!

I might be wrong but I thought university of New Mexico was this week. I met an applicant during my interviews who said they are traveling to New Mexico this week for interviews. I’ll contact him to validate my thought

Also in the attending-but-haven't-formally-accepted-any-offers boat. I'm winding down things at my current position and making sure things are documented so they don't fall apart when I leave my lab manager post.

Somehow I didn't get the relax memo though and I'm working on a manuscript haha. (I don't want a big gap on my CV and I enjoy the work--hence applying for PhD).

Are you waiting for funding info as well?

'Good' is where you have the best fit and will find support for the work you want to do. Everything else is noise.

Exactly! It’s more like tiers than rankings:

    R1 fully funded programs

    R2 fully funded programs

    Private school partial funded programs

    small university partial funded programs

    Unfunded programs

    for profit programs.

I haven't decided what school yet but I do know I will be attending a Ph.D. program this fall!

I've been traveling as much as my full-time job allows. working on some passion projects (YouTube and blogging), and reading books for fun (I'm a sucker for YA fiction). As well, I just preordered the Animal Crossing Nintendo Switch, so I intend on wasting as much time as possible playing that and Stardew Valley.

Basically, I'm going to do very little to prepare myself for grad school besides my duties in my research lab that I volunteer/work in part-time. I just want to enjoy my time off and live as much as possible.

Love that answer! This has been the oddest feeling for me. PhD has been my goal for so long and it is what I think about 90% of the time... now my brain is confused on what to do everyday if I’m not doing research or applying for programs lol

I think my goal until I leave to my program will be giving my wife everything she wants. She has been such a trooper through all the pain of applying and traveling for schools. Her support has been everything to me and I don’t want that to go unnoticed. I got us tickets to a concert and hopefully I can take her on a little vacation lol

  11. Hi Everyone,

I have been an active member of this forum for a while now. It has helped me through the application process This cycle and has tormented me with each interview results coming in that I didn’t get lol.

Regardless, I made it this application cycle and after 21 applications, 4 interviews (I had 9 but went to 4) and 4 offers, I’ve made my decision!!!!

Well that was two weeks ago and now I’m just sitting here waiting. Now what do I do?

To my fellow admitted people, what are you doing to pass the time lol?

To anyone in a clinical or counseling psychology Ph.D program, do you have any advice on what I should do to prepare myself for the doctoral grind. General or detailed answers are welcomed.

    thanks you guys!

...What was that downvote for Justice4All being accepted though? Maybe they saw through your such side which seems to go against the important qualities in counseling profession.

Let’s not make little remarks. This individual most likely just found out that he/she was not given an offer and this was his/her only doctoral  application. It’s okay to be mad and sometimes that leads to lashing out. If she/he ever needs support or tips on the next application cycle let me know. I can help

  13. All are good schools but no ranking system is around to properly rate them. Clinical psych programs also don’t have concrete rankings because these programs are so small and unique overall.

for personal rankings, I would suggest looking at:

    1.research  fit of the POI

    2. research production or prac opportunities (depending on your path)

    3. Funding

    4. internship placement stats

    5. Overall feel from the program (through the interview process)

For example, all of those schools, I would personally rank outside of my top 10 based on fit and production of research in my field. When applying, it is important to do the proper due diligence and make sure you are applying to numerous programs that you feel you are a great fit and you would be competitive in. The worst thing an applicant can do is look at this as “easy to get into” and apply only to one program.

Created just an account just to post this: I had an interview this weekend for my top school and there were SEVEN people being interviewed to work with my desired PI, including myself. This isn't taking into consideration that they had a second interview day, so there were likely more potential students that were interviewed the day I didn't attend. I have faith in my abilities and how I presented myself, but it also sucked knowing that I still had so many people to compete against. It's my first year applying, and I'm not too familiar with how the process works, but from scouring these forums I'm led to believe that this situation isn't typical.

Idk why everyone is saying this isn’t typical lol. This is exactly how my experience is. You prob did not catch potential Skype interviews in your number as well. On average, based on my experience, POI’s look at 6-7 people and sometimes go back into the applicant pool. That’s life tho. They have one spot every year typically and they are trying to make the right choice and see if you are a fit. In my experience, I can’t tell you how many times  people interview poorly or socially and essentially take themselves out of the running. So more times then not, you need to make an impact, you need to be unique and you need to match well. The other applicants don’t matter and that’s why you shouldn’t treat it like competition, even if they are going for your POI.

Yes! And my spouse can only transfer to a handful of locations in the Midwest only. It made it very difficult to find programs to apply to that were also a good fit. I am still waiting for financial info, so am not celebrating quite yet, but I was accepted to the program that out of those I applied to is actually (I feel) the best fit for research/client focus for me and is in the heart of his company's territory (as in the corporate office is just two hours away and there are a dozen locations to within an hour of the university- so the chances of him being able to transfer laterally are good). It's sucked a bit, because it meant I couldn't apply to some programs I would have loved to (for example: the professor who literally wrote the book on the integrated therapy style I use invited me to apply to their program as their mentee.... but it's several states away from the nearest location my spouse could transfer to).

It is a ton of pressure to try and make it work out, but it's important to us that we do. You are not alone in this!

It really is! My situation last year was picking big population metropolitan area so my wife can have a vast amount of opportunities. We learned the hard way that it was a bad idea and I didn’t get in anywhere. Almost broke my confidence but thankfully this year proved that I can succeed in this field and I was accepted to numerous places so we had a choice.

This is not my first go at this and I am super grateful to have been accepted to the 4 programs that I interviewed for. I’m still waiting for funding information so I haven’t made a decision yet, but I am surprised at how stressful this is! I thought I would feel relieved at this point. Anyone else married or in a committed relationship during this process? I feel so much more pressure because we need to choose a place that works for the both of us. I can’t wait until we know for sure!

I’m on the same boat as you, got accepted at all locations I interviewed and haven’t received funding information. I made the choice with my wife that we will take my top choice based on fit and location. The funding is there so whether one place gives +100 or w/e on the stipend, I still want to choose my top choice. Now, I don’t mind accepting prior funding info because this is a top R1 program and guarantees full funding so i guess I’m in a unique position

    Hi friends-

So I am trying to prepare for a clinical psych PhD interview, but I am having trouble knowing how to prepare for the research aspect of it. My POI just transferred from one university to another this past year and said he is moving his current research to this university, but his lab website doesn't have any updates on current projects and such. I have read his lab's major publications from the past 2-3 years, but I don't know what questions to ask given that I don't know his current projects, only his previous ones from the other university. Should I build research questions off of his previous work? Am I overthinking?

You need to figure out the research interests and go from there. It is totally fine to ask during the interview what your POI currently has planned or what’s the 5 year plan for his or her research.

also, I’m if you have time with anyone in the lab you can totally get all the research details from them and be prepared for the interview

  18. This might be the best topic but screw it:

what happens after your acceptance?!?!? I’m so bored now and all I want is to talk to people in the program and hear back from my new advisor.

PS to everyone venting about the challenges of getting in. This is my 3rd run. Every year I’ve improved myself and you can too!!!!

    2017-5 applied, 0 interviews

    2018-9 applied, 3 interviews

    2019- 21 applied, 9 interviews, 4 acceptances, 1 waitlist.

if anyone needs advises, let me know. I can look over your stuff if you need insight for next year

When those of you who have gotten a phone call from your POI with an informal offer, do you just get a cold call and then it's this very exciting news you didn't expect, or have they emailed you first to set up an arranged phone call?

I got cold called in the morning. Told me he was waiting for 3 hours to call during an appropriate time lmao. It be clear. At the end of the interview, he made it clear he was calling “everyone” about his decision on that Monday and he did that
