Social Work vs. other fields for Ph.D research project
Adelaide9216 replied to Adelaide9216's topic in Social Workers Forum
Yeah sorry. My English is not the best (I am a francophone). I am currently at McGill but am applying to Ottawa for my Ph.D. My current advisor is someone I've worked with since my undergraduate studies and I have a great link with her. However, for Ph.D. programs and scholarships, mobility is important and that's why I am applying to Ottawa. The potential supervisor at Ottawa is a safe option for me in terms of my expectations and needs as a supervisee. I don't want to risk studying somewhere else because I trust this advisor at Ottawa. Is that clearer? -
Social Work vs. other fields for Ph.D research project
Adelaide9216 replied to Adelaide9216's topic in Social Workers Forum
It's not my advisor who's saying that I should go elsewhere. It's my friend who read through my proposal. -
Hello everyone, I am working on a scholarship application. One of my friends read through my research proposal and she did mention that my topic is very interesting but has difficulty seeing how it relates to social work. She says that it appears to her that it would be a better fit in sociology, political science or communications. Social work is quite interdisciplinary as a field, and the reason why I picked social work is because I did my undergrad and graduate studies in social work. I'm picking a different university for my Ph.D. and have a very good feeling about my advisor (with whom I have developed this proposal). I don't want to risk going elsewhere to an advisor I feel that I won't be able to work with. What are you thoughts on this? I'll probably stick to SW anyway, but just wanted to hear your two cents.

Ontario Grad. Scholarship versus Canadian Grad.Scholarship
Adelaide9216 replied to Lauren770's topic in The Bank
I believe you can't have both at the same time. But CGS-M is more prestigious. It also makes you more likely to win the Ontario Grad Scholarship in the following year. The more scholarships you get, even the small ones, the better it is for the most prestigious ones. PS : I'm also a MSW but in Quebec. I got CGS-M for 2017-2018 and am waiting for the Quebec Grad scholarship (FRQSC) for 2018-2019 (should know by the end of the month). -

what is the difference between a scholarship and a grant? -
LOL I am not applying for Vanier this year, but I'd be having a heart attack lol

Thanks everyone. I am asking this because I realize that I feel very lonely (although I am an independant person and loves spending time on my own). Grad school is a very lonely process I find.

The results will be out at the end of April. I'm still feeling anxious over the situation that happened last term due to a mistake in my grades....I am still admissible to the scholarship when I look at the portal, but am traumatized about what happened and fear that I will somehow become unadmissible lol

I am at McGill, got the award last year, but do not know what was my ranking. I was just told by a prof that was on the comittee that my ranking was very high. -
Hello, how do you guys self-care?

I totally understand the feeling, I was so surprised I got funded last year! It's a good thing to apply even when one's unsure of their chances. -

How do you know your ranking? Last year, when I got the offer, I never got to see my ranking. -
I've been told that it isn't that hard to get accepted into PhD programs in social work, at least in my Canada. Most social workers practice, rather that do research so I guess that partially explains it. I think it all depends also if your research interests fits with the interests of your potential supervisor and the expertise of the university you're applying to. You do sound like a strong applicant. I think you should apply, you've got nothing to lose.

Do you have an example of a study/article that's a study design that others could carry out?
