I applied Western Washington, Central Washington, Montana State, University Northern Colorado, Portland State, and Adams State. Adams accepted me, but they accept literally everyone and then interview the second year for some reason (it's my back up). Interviewed already at UNC and MSU, haven't heard back yet. I have upcoming interviews at WWU and CWU, and I rejected the interview at PSU because interviews are expensive!! and it wasn't among my top choices

Two Stupid Mistakes (Am I Screwed?)
meep95 replied to Musick's topic in Statement of Purpose, Personal History, Diversity
I accidentally wrote "suck as" instead of "such as" in my first SOP, that was due Dec. 1st. somehow I, my advisor, and my parents did not catch it. I was convinced I would be rejected. I still got an interview though, and should hear back if I got in next week. Its not ideal but still definitely possible -
Schools that only have a MA program and not a PhD program sometimes do. I'm applying to a few schools with really research oriented programs that help set you up more for a PhD (although they are terminal programs, obviously). They only have 6-8 people per cohort so its not as competitive for the assistantships and they apparently TA research lab , stat's or intro to (subject) classes. There are also opportunities to be research assistantship for professors. Its harder to find that set up if there is a PhD program above it, since typically the PhD students are favored and get more opportunities than the masters.

I agree, I think research is very important for PhD. My biggest problem is most MA programs I applied to turn out to emphasize research way less than they let on from their website. I've only found this out in interviews. One school only requires one stats class, and it apparently doesn't even involve SPSS or a similar program. The only opportunities at these schools seem to be a RA, if you are lucky. Luckily I still have two interviews left, both of which I am are more competitive and do involve a lot more research. Hopefully I get into one of those schools!

No idea why, but I read "baking" as "barking". I was very confused about your coping strategies for a moment haha- 89 replies

Oh gosh that is horrible! I found out that one of my recommenders the year prior did not send the letter of rec. for 3 schools for a student. So she basically wasted $300 and a lot of effort on schools that she could have gotten in to. I luckily found out that she did this a month before my first school deadline, so I was able to remind her a few times to send them in time.

I am about to start my MA in order to become licensed. However, I am certain that I want to continue on in order to get my PhD. How different is that application process? I am thinking I will go into a Counseling Psychology program, but it could change. Either way, it will be psych based. I know research and the GRE (subject specifically) are more weighted usually. I want to know now any tips or tricks so that I can get what I need to done as a masters student in order to be the best possible PhD candidate. As a bachelor's student, I talked to MA students to compile the best way to get into MA programs. This is what I did, or would recommend, if anyone is curious: good GPA (duh) take the GRE in advance, so you can take it again if needed (I did not do this, and ended up with a subpar quantitative score unfortunately) work experience in your area, or an internship (i have both, and am fortunate to go to an undergrad program that has a practicum experience that was very helpful) get research experience, and present if possible (I co-authored with a professor and did an independent one) get volunteer experience, potentially in a few areas (I volunteered at a domestic violence shelter and taught suicide intervention classes in my community) get leadership experience, as manager at work or club officer (I was an officer in my school's psychology club) form relationships with professors and supervisors early on in college so they know you when you need letters of rec. if you have an opportunity for certifications in your field, take them If I think of anything else I'll update it. I appreciate any answers! And feel free to ask any questions about what I listed. Or if you did anything different that worked for you I would love to hear about that too!

A school I applied to that is by no means my first choice is pressuring me to accept within the week. I still have two more interviews to go on before after they want to know by! I checked, and they did sign that declaration about April 15th. I'm not sure what to do. If I don't get into the two schools I still have to interview at (my first 2 choices), I might want to go to this school. But I don't want to commit and back out later. What is the best way to handle this? Have any of you been in this situation before?
