CAgirl13 got a reaction from katie_rose in Speech Pathology Grad Programs GRE
Hi! I had the same GPA as you and my scores were only a couple points higher (155 on verbal, 154 on math and 5.5 on writing), along with good letters of rec and a year of work experience and I got into NYU and BU if that helps! I really don't think your scores will hurt you, they're actually pretty good! It also sounds like you have a lot going for you in terms of your whole application so I think you'll be just fine! Most schools have a holistic approach so I doubt they wouldn't look at you just because of your GRE (which isnt bad at all)! Good luck, hope this helped to ease your mind a little bit!

Hey all! I just graduated from the undergraduate program at Boulder, if you have any questions about anything considering the area or anything, maybe I can answer any questions!

I don’t know much about the schools you’re applying for but I’ll tell you about my experience. I applied to 14 schools and got accepted into half of them. I have a 3.5 GPA and lower than 150 GREs. I will suggest the same thing, do your research on the ASHA website. Take the GREs at least 2 times (unless you get 150s or higher). I wouldn’t say apply to 14 schools, but around 8 is a good number (depends on your financial status). Take the GREs early in advance so you have the time (if you need to retake them). Magoosh is very helpful for the GREs. Your gpa seems fine to me, just make sure your GREs are good and your personal statement stands out!  I’m sure you’ll be fine.

I don't think there's any magic number. There's people on here that apply to 1 school and then there's people who apply to 15. I think you need to be aware of your financial situation (you'll easily be spending over $500 on the GRE and applications), where it is realistically possible for you to move, etc.
I would just take some time look through ASHA edFind and finding schools that accept people around your GPA/GRE scores!

Have you thought of volunteering in the field?  I volunteer at an aphasia center and feel like that greatly helped my applications.  When you reach out to speech therapy practices, it may be beneficial if you word it as you're looking for a "volunteer" experience versus internship.  I feel like places are more receptive to that since internships are usually school based and have paperwork that come with them.

Raise your GRE! Pay for Magoosh and study your butt off!!! Magoosh helped me raise my score almost 20 points (no they didn't pay me to promote it). Take a ton of FULL and TIMED practice exams in a realistic setting... this will raise your score and get you comfortable with the timing.

Second, contact the schools you're rejected from and ask them how you can improve for next time. Take their advice above and beyond.

Work or volunteer in a related field so you have a lot of new experiences to write about in a personal statement and resume. MAKE THIS TIME OFF WORK FOR YOU.

It's not gonna be easy but if you really want to get into grad school you will need to work super hard to offset the GPA. Also, make sure you apply strategically next time to either smaller schools or schools that are less competitive (ASHA edfind is your bff).

I just got ACCEPTED to one of my top 2 schools after being waitlisted there back in March! I honestly am in so much shock and so happy!! I hope this provides some hope to others because I seriously thought "oh that won't happen to me I would never get off of a waitlist" and I did! Sending so many thoughts and good vibes to everyone still waiting and wishing for the best for all of you in this position!

So I’m sure this is may be a stupid/silly question and may not matter at all but when a program says the deadline to accept is April 15th is that right before midnight on April 15th their time or would it be by 5pm or by midnight on April 15th wherever you currently are? Thanks in advance!

It's definitely on the early side, but I figured I might as well start the 2018 version of this thread! (I was just procrastinating studying for finals searching for a Facebook group for my chosen program, and I found last year's version of this post.) Definitely more efficient than scanning the Results page, etc.
If you create a group, please post a link here! When others commit to a school, they can find the groups here. Congrats to everyone, and best of luck to all those still waiting and/or deciding!

Hi! I go to Penn State currently for undergrad! I loved my 4 years here and I wouldn't change a thing! I love the big campus feel, everyone is super friendly and campus is easily accessible by walking (everything is roughly 15 minutes walk from each other). Many graduate students live off campus in an area called Toft Trees, which is about 10 minute drive off campus and is right by the airport and a few restaurants. Most students take a bus from there to campus, due to restricted parking spots for students (the parking spots are mainly for faculty). Penn State has FABULOUS research! I have been involved in two research labs here on campus and have loved every minute of it. If you want to have a good background in research, I recommend our program. The grad program here is small, but it's great for one-on-one time with teachers and faculty. Our clinic is on campus and is located on the first floor of the CSD building. The only downside is that we don't live near many hospitals for the medical rotation, so you may have to travel for that rotation. In addition, the downtown feel of State College is amazing, it makes the college seem a lot bigger and more lively than it already is. PS you can get tickets for our football games! If you are able to bring your car, I recommend it. I park a few blocks from my apartment and I love being able to get off campus for a little bit. Sometimes I do feel trapped being on campus all the time, so having a car gives me a little break. Best of luck in graduate school!
