I got into a clinical phd with an undergrad gap of 3.2 and a masters gpa of 3.0 (neither of these in psychology). I did take some undergrad classes from 2016 and 2018 in psychology to show that I can do coursework

Accepted PhD Position But Now Want to Decline
presentfancies replied to psyche132's topic in Psychology Forum
From my understanding, it really doesn't matter if your school is "top-ranked" as long as you are in a school and lab where you will be able to be productive and make good connections. I don't think ranking is the whole story. If you are in a lab with a fantastic mentor at a lesser ranked school, and you are able to consistently publish and present and apply for grants/fellowships successfully, I would be extremely surprised if the ranking of the school would hold you back from getting TT jobs. Anyone else can chime in here if they know more about this than me. -
For those who are attending a Clin Psych prog this fall...
presentfancies replied to Psyche007's topic in Psychology Forum
So I do work as a research coordinator but I work for a major hospital and will be moving across the country to start my PhD at an entirely different program, so potentially very different circumstances than it sounds like what you have going on. I absolutely agree and understand that you don't want to continue to be engaged in coordinator level activities once you start, I feel the same way. By wrapping up I mean that I am finishing up a lot of stuff like data entry that needs to be done before I leave and creating manuals for how to do things, like creating guidelines for data entry, recruitment, etc. so the person who they hire to fill my role (fingers crossed!) won't have to reach out to me too much for questions about how to do any aspects of my job. Otherwise, I am working on finishing up other projects, like the manuscript with my colleagues, so I'm not focusing energy on anything outside of my lab's research once I get going with school. -

I'm super excited as well to start! I haven't had a ton of contact with my advisor yet, which makes sense because she is on sabbatical. I've been focusing on wrapping up projects at my current position and getting everything in a good place for the person who will take over my job. I am also trying to finish up writing a manuscript for my first first-author publication. I hope to have that in submission before I leave for school so my co-authors don't have to track me down via email every time we need to discuss something. In terms of getting ready for school, I don't really plan to do very much other than find a place to live and figure out moving. I want to take a vacation before I start, which I am thinking either a yoga retreat somewhere gorgeous like Utah or Arizona or maybe going to Mexico and enjoying the beach. I have been doing some data analysis for the manuscript which has been a nice refresher on statistical work. Otherwise, I read a lot of the papers published in my field so I feel like I will continue doing that, but only because I find it enjoyable. My major focus is relaxing and resting so I am in a really good mental place when I start school -
My partner is finishing up his PhD in neuroscience and he did not have a publication when he got accepted.

I just caved and asked my Clark POI if they have any information about an anticipated time frame for hearing back about admissions results. I have a gut feeling I was waitlisted or rejected and that they are waiting to tell me until later on, but I need to know at this point so I can emotionally move on and gear up for either another cycle or a career switch out of research and academia- 158 replies

What are people's experiences being waitlisted?
presentfancies replied to Waitlistedbuthopeful's topic in Psychology Forum
I'm really sorry to hear this- I am sure that you are a very strong applicant so don't lose hope. This process is honestly a crapshoot and I think comes down to a lot of random variables that have no bearing on you as a person. I was at UNL's weekend and thought every applicant I met was very nice, intelligent, and successful so I'm sure that you will succeed no matter where your path takes you. My mom always tells me that everything happens for a reason and the place you end up, wherever that may be, is the place that is meant for you to be. I am also waiting to hear back about an acceptance from UNL and I understand how stressful and anxiety provoking it is. I think it shows that you are a very strong applicant that you are first alternate for not one but 3 schools. It is very likely that at one of those places, someone will decline admission. -

Interviewed at Nebraska this past weekend and am seeing acceptances trickle in (somehow a literal day after the interview???), which is causing me to anxiously re-live every moment of the interview weekend. I'm really introverted so I don't excel at group/casual settings but I think I interview well so IDK what to think. I just want this to be over.- 158 replies

Also, if it's helpful to anyone- I got a navy suit from Banana Republic that came down to $170 (40% off). It's gorgeous and really high quality for the price. They might still have the sale going on!

Fall 2019 Clinical Psych Interview Invites
presentfancies replied to clinicalpsych20192020's topic in Psychology Forum
For my invite to UNL I had brief email correspondence with my POI where I asked her about ongoing and expected research projects that she expected upcoming students to get involved in and gave an introduction about my research interests with my CV attached. I did hear back from her and she provided a lot of information, which was very nice of her (it made writing the SOP so much easier!). A day after I submitted my application, I followed up with her to thank her again for taking time to send me the information and that I had applied to work with her lab. She responded good luck and that they would begin reviewing applications in January. I did have a phone call with her over this past weekend which was much more informal than I expected where she primed me for the weather in Nebraska, what the city was like, to answer any of my questions about the logistics of the interview weekend, and re-assured me that there will be limited correspondence between us until the interview weekend and not to become discouraged if I don't hear from her until the interview-- which I thought was very nice of her. -
