samiamslp reacted to Toya in Stuttering SLP2Be
Yes, I just attended a CEU with a fluency specialist and ~35 percent of her utterances was disfluent. We are not robots! I have disfluent moments or mispronounced words as well. When it happens I self-correct and tell my client ( I am an SLPA) or parent that we all make mistakes and the purpose of speech isn't to be"perfect". Parents love this and they tell me the words they cannot say, lol. It allows me to connect with parents more and limit the hierarchy.

samiamslp reacted to ambermarie in Accepted off the waitlist and feeling INADEQUATE - SLP
think of it this way: in a few years, when you're an slp, NO ONE will care whether or not you got in right away or off the waitlist. all that matters is you're in! they simply didn't have space before, and now that they do, they want YOU. you're gonna rock it!

samiamslp reacted to lasmith in Accepted off the waitlist and feeling INADEQUATE - SLP
You shouldn't feel inadequate at all. Usually there is more qualified applicants than there is space in a cohort. Being waitlisted means that they saw potential in you but there may have been people with higher stats. Also, you never know exactly what a admissions team is looking for. But my point is if they did not want you there, you would have gotten rejected. Hope this helps and best of luck!

I will never understand people who say they are "surprised" to get rejected...I wish I had that kind of confidence.

@clmogel not sure where you're living atm, but just wanted to say I lived in Rockville for a number of years (enough that I consider myself a Rockvillean at heart) and absolutely loved it! It's perfect. Vibrant, diverse, historic, cultural, safe, public transport as good as you'll find anywhere in the country, wonderful libraries, parts of it are very walkable, lovely parks, theatre, art, restaurants, close enough to DC to have an infinite variety of cultural and educational opportunities, but some pretty good chunks of it are suburban enough to not be too hectic (although unfortunately that's changing as developers are stuffing it full of overpriced high-rises), and (for now) it's still relatively affordable compared to, say, Bethesda. I was so happy there and would move back in a heartbeat if I could! I met so many interesting people from all walks of life and all of them were brilliant.
As far as finding jobs in the DC area, I can't really speak to that because I found my current job through someone-who-knew-someone-who-knew-someone etc etc, but I will say volunteering is a great way to get a foot in the door. I got my first job offer in the area that way.

If you are from a New England state you qualify for New England Regional Tuition with the SLP Master program. This reduces tuition to in-state cost. One of the reasons I will be completing my masters here

samiamslp reacted to SpeechGal1234 in BU vs. MGH IHP
Yes and no. It is really hard to predict whether you will be affected by that summer semester. I don't think it makes it more difficult for most people to find a CF, but it may limit your options. The last semester of the IHP is usually a very light load of classes. You may only be taking 4 credits of class. If you are done with classes early, you can easily start a job early (July or August) because you don't have your diploma, but you have finished all classes and you can get a letter from the institute stating that you have completed coursework and will receive your diploma in September. But it is possible that you cannot apply to some specific CF positions that may start July 1, as some "dedicated" CF positions will start early because most programs end in May. Also, there's no guarantee that you will be done with classes & outplacement by July, so you may have obligations well into August. If you want to move and work in a school system outside of New England, that could be a problem. In the end, everyone does find a CF, but that extra summer can limit your options.

samiamslp reacted to draySLP1 in Accepted offer bc I thought I was rejected from my top choice...but I wasn't. What should I do?
Decide which one you'd rather go to and go there! It's your career and your life and your decision. They will understand, and even if they don't, are you okay with making a choice about your education and your future in order to avoid a few awkward moments?

Also, please decline as soon as you know you are not interested in attending, so that schools can send out more acceptances before April 15th if possible! I am still waiting on hearing back from a program (Emerson), since they seem to be waiting to hear back from accepted students before accepting others or adding people to their waitlist.

Just saw this posted on the results page:
Emerson College Speech Language Pathology, Masters (F19) Other via Other on 19 Mar 2019 19 Mar 2019 report spam To anyone still waiting on Emerson responses I emailed them this morning and they said "We are still in the process of releasing decisions and will be doing so throughout the next week." So don't lose hope just yet -
samiamslp reacted to maimas4466 in Research vs. Clinic Opportunities
I am currently deciding on a graduate school to attend, and I am interested in pediatric dysphagia. I hope to eventually get a PhD in this topic, so I hope to get some relevant research under my belt during graduate school. One school I am considering has researchers on this topic, and the other does not. However, the school that does not indicated that I may be able to do research (likely not a full-blown thesis, however) on the topic, and has an externship, making a placement in the NICU much more attainable than in the school with pediatric dysphagia research. Does anyone have any insight as to what would be better for my future career? Likely NICU clinic with minimal research or possible NICU clinic with thesis research?
