It was just a piece of advice but the way you responded to this kind of proves my point of immaturity. Best of luck in this process!

Thanks for this! I almost always say that I "really enjoy" or "am passionate about" in an interview setting. However, I say "love" a lot in day to day life which is why I typed it, lol

I would be wary of using the word “love” to describe your emotions to interviewers. It can come off as immature during my experience of interviewing potential new students for our program.

hopefulgrad2019 reacted to Psychtime in Has anyone got any stories of being accepted into a Phd Clinical Psychology program with a below 3.0 undergraduate gpa?
These comments are the truth. Clinical psych does not admit people with that GPA. They just do not. Maybe somehow you will find an outlier, but it's very rare. We are being honest and realistic and not selling false hope just to make the OP feel good. It's a waste of money and time for them to apply with that.

No, in short with so many applicants with much higher GPAs who don't get in, you have no shot. That is the brutal truth. If you smash the GREs, they will think you goofed off in school. Your best hope is to go to a master's and kill it. People saying it's holistic etc are dreaming if they think a sub 3.0 GPA will get a serious consideration. It won't. Dead on arrival. Are they even familiar with clinical psych?  . Unless it is an unfunded for profit school, but those are terrible, so don't go there. Don't waste your money applying at this point. The reality is people with 4.0 GPAs and great GRE get rejected all the time. someone with a 2.8 or something is not getting one of those few spots. This is the truth. No sugar coating, I know it sucks to hear, but it's the reality.

I can see what you're saying, but I have to disagree. It is equally as rude to go to an interview knowing full well you're most likely going to accept an offer elsewhere. Not to mention, it's a lot of money out the window. Schools have applicants on hold for this very reason, and by her giving away her spot for the interview, she's most likely allowing a more eager applicant to take her place. I would say it's more considerate than anything.

My funding was in my formal offer letter and it did tell me the amount. Don’t accept any offer without the funding details clearly laid out.

(There’s no “ranking” of clinical psych programs because a top choice for me who’s interested in neuropsych isnt going to be a top choice for someone with other interests so I wouldn’t take this advice with much weight at all).

I do agree that applications are reviewed holistically. I’m a clinical psych grad student at a R1 and my quant score was below the 50th percentile with my other scores being 85 percentile verbal & 99 percentile writing. But my mentor did have to advocate for me to be invited to interview because they were concerned with my low quant score. It does matter but matters less if your research match is stellar and you have great letters and research experience, etc.

Unfortunately, you are wrong about the GRE not mattering. In Psych, it is often used to screen people out to the sheer number of applicants and small amount of spots. Social Work is a completely different field. To be blunt, your GRE scores would not get you interviews in a clinical psych program. Your advice is well-intentioned, but misguided here. Many schools won't even look at scores below the 50th percentile and rarely accept people even that low. Look at the stats of accepted people in clinical. It's eye opening.

Hey guys! I know this is an old(ish) thread, but I just wanted to update and say... I got my first acceptance today! I got into the MS in Psychology at Villanova University! I won't hear about Graduate Assistantships or financial aid until mid-March, but I think this is a good sign for me. I just wanted to let you all know that I'm not doomed. ?

Last year alone, 60,000 people died from the flu in the US. Statically speaking, you are much more likely to get infected with the flu, and subsequently die from the flu. But we've all been out here living our best lives anyways haha! So try not to stress about it despite the media coverage.

With the *I is stressed* venting thread being fairly active (which I appreciate greatly), I thought I'd start the antithesis of it: an "I feel capable and ready to go into my interview and I would like to share my positive thoughts to others" or "Things aren't working out exactly the way I want but it'll all be okay" or "I'm getting a ton of interviews and I just want to say I'm happy" thread.
Me personally, I'm feeling pretty excited about my interview. Obviously the nerves are still intact, but I'm in a good mood and very aware of how lucky I am to be in this position and to have had such wonderful opportunities in my life. Whatever happens this year, I know I should be happy with the work I put in--I think we all should!
If you're feeling positive, post some encouraging words here for others who may need a boost. The one rule is that I think we should refrain from bragging or trying to covertly one-up each other with our achievements. Post things you're proud of, obviously, but make sure it isn't to prove some sort of academic superiority.

This happened to me last year with Florida except they said I could complete a Skype interview and then never scheduled one or replied to my emails about setting it up (I emailed 3 times then let it go)... it obviously wasn’t my top choice because I chose to go to a different schools interview weekend (where I’m now a grad student) but definitely left a bad taste in my mouth!
