I was accepted to my top choice a few days before my final interview and chose not to attend the interview. I feel as though it came across as unprofessional so close to the interview day and I regret giving the program that impression of me. However, it made more sense financially (and frankly travel stress-wise) not to attend. My POI at the school I was interviewing at had also reached out to tell me they were leaving the program a few weeks beforehand, so I did not feel as though the interview was going to lead to an acceptance (or at least be a good fit) at that point anyway.
My advisor (who accepts clinical doctoral students) said people drop out of interviews all the time and it's no big deal, so it likely wouldn't come off as inconsiderate (but I know different POIs can have different perspectives on this).

Just got accepted to my top choice this morning, and I have removed myself from all the other schools. Hope that helps other people on the waitlist and waiting for interview slots!

hermm reacted to CherryDarlingg in Has anyone got any stories of being accepted into a Phd Clinical Psychology program with a below 3.0 undergraduate gpa?
    Hey OP!
I am currently in a funded PhD program in Clinical Psychology and my undergraduate GPA was just under 3.0.
I had a very difficult freshman year for personal reasons, and those resulted in significant academic struggles. As some previous posters have mentioned, my last two years were both over 3.5 and the marks I received in my psychology courses were consistently high - not high enough to get my GPA over the 3.0 mark though.
Knowing the likelihood of getting into any program with this GPA, I worked in a research position for 2 years before getting my MA where I got a 4.0. I also worked part-time and in 2 labs and made sure to study my ass off for the Psych GRE. After graduating from my masters program I worked in a clinical position for another 2 years. I applied to PhD programs after only a year of working (no offers, 2 interviews and waitlisted at both schools). Last year I applied to 7 schools, interviewed at 2 again and was accepted at both when offers first went out.
I remember being in your position and thinking I had completely f****ed up my chances of having the career I wanted. Anything is possible if you're willing to put in the time and work - and it was a lot of work. Your journey to a PhD might not look like everyone else's, but if you have enough drive and passion to be here you'll figure out a way - either by stacking your CV with experiences and a masters and/or getting published and throwing yourself into research. You will not get into the schools that automatically weed out undergrad GPAs under a certain number and all of the previous posters are right that it decreases your overall chances. Thankfully there are others that look at the whole picture and there are ways to stand out. Happy to give you more info in a DM!

I received a text from a POI i applied to on 12/23 to have an informal phone interview and we scheduled for 12/26. Then he cancelled it and said he would reach out after Christmas to find a new date. I didn't hear anything from him and then reached out on 1/9 and said I was available next week, and he said he would reach out then. Now it's 2 more weeks later and I just sent another text asking when we might be able to connect. Is this normal? Am i handling this correctly? Insight?

28 year old here! Turning 29 this year. If i have to reapply, that means I might be 30 when I start a PhD program. That gave me a lot of anxiety at first, but I'm going to age anyways. I would rather age doing something fulfilling and meaningful. It does suck to feel like I'm getting a late start on my career, but timing doesn't matter as much as just doing the thing!
Can I ask why you would spend time getting another master's degree?

I've been finding a lot of my stress is coming from comparing myself to other candidates, especially on this site (even though I just found it yesterday morning - oops).
One thing I'm trying to work on is reminding myself that we are all from different backgrounds and lives and it isn't even possible to accurately compare any of us.
I'm also applying straight out of undergrad and I am quickly realizing that most people don't seem to take that route and I need to be easier on myself overall.
