Thanks for the thoughtful response. Honestly, you sound a bit like possible future me. I'm definitely dead set on not accruing additional debt, but if I'm able to avoid that then it's probably still worth considering in the grand scheme of things. If I might ask, do you feel that your choice ended up being worth it? Do you feel at peace with the thought you might have been able to go to a higher-ranked/fully-funded program if you'd waited?

Yeah, I'm in the middle of my 3rd year, and I think I'm where I needed to be. I've had some amazing practicum experiences and research opportunities. My cohort is fantastic. And honestly, looking back with the knowledge I have now, I don't think I would have been as happy in my initial 1st choice as I am now. I'm also in an incredibly large metro area in the northeast and the opportunities I've had here just aren't possible in the more rural area my original top choice was in.

Thought I'd come on here and see if anybody could offer some thoughts/advice as to what my next steps could be: For a little background I'm a BIPOC male about to finish up undergrad this semester and so I applied to a mix of masters and PhD programs in clinical and counseling psychology. I haven't heard back from masters programs yet but I've gotten a few rejections from the PhD ones and while I'm not throwing in the towel I certainly know how competitive these programs are and apps went up everywhere this year so I'm not feeling great about my chances. I applied to a few masters programs so I could get my GPA up (3.2 so not terrible not amazing either) and get more research experience if I choose to apply again. However I have a significant amount of debt in student loans from undergrad and I really don't want to take on more debt and it's not even guaranteed that I would gain admission into a PhD program afterwards. I've been applying to paid research positions too but I know those are also just as competitive and I fear I may not be able to secure one of these positions either. Basically unsure as to what I should do next and if I should consider other research jobs that won't be in psychology but could allow me to support myself financially and begin paying off loans. Sorry to clog this forum with my situation but just wanted some ideas. Thank you in advance whoever reads this!! :)

Anyone have any thoughts about the importance of answering a phone call from a possible POI/school vs letting it go to voicemail and calling back? Do we think faculty mind us letting it go to voicemail or there would be a chance they won't leave one if we don't answer? Probably relatively unimportant in the grand scheme of things, but wanted to see what others think.

I guess I did great during my preliminary interview because my POI just invited me to an official one next week and told me she was preparing an email to introduce me to her lab if I was still interested AND OF COURSE I AM. I am so shocked. On Monday when we had the preliminary interview, she told me to expect to hear from her in a few weeks..............its been THREE DAYS. I am so happy.

This is encouraging, thanks for sharing. :) I hope things continue to go well for you!

Do PIs basically have to fight over taking students? Because it seems like there are way more faculty than the amount of students they let in at a lot of programs.

I actually had a great conversation with my professor over this last year because they interviewed students but ended up not being able to take one. From my understanding, the department does state how many students they can take each year but they also factor in who is taking a student. For example, if you have two professors wanting students but one professor is tenured and the other is not, the department will likely give the non-tenured professor first pick since their goal is to help professors build their labs and become tenured. In addition, most tenured professors have established labs and research. Remember, the overall goal is to help a program grow. Ultimately, this is not set in stone but may provide some insight into the complexities that go on even after interviews go out or even happen at all.

Maybe not "fight" but I think the persons response above nails it. I had a PI reach out to me and explain that when there are more faculty wanting a student than there are slots, certain faculty get priority depending on their status in the department (tenured, nontenured, etc).

from a USC fac on twitter: "We just had our faculty interview selection meeting yesterday. Core faculty are each inviting five & affiliated fac are inviting two applicants to interview. The dept funds 16 slots (across areas); if we admit more, indiv fac must cover"

THANK YOU! :) best of luck to all of us! Does this mean they likely haven’t extended all offers yet? Maybe a slow process?

Has anyone received an official invite to an interview at DU? I don't recall seeing any in the results section and it is my top choice, so want to remain hopeful!

From what I've heard faculty are making final decisions this week and potentially next week

So I also haven’t taken on a masters because the financial stress isn’t something I can feasibly do. I won’t say it’s been easy but it’s been doable. I already had a job throughout undergrad that was able to accommodate my schedule and when I got a volunteer position at a research lab my paying job continued to be flexible with me. While doing this won’t increase your GPA it will increase your experience and I think you can get into programs even with your GPA. I think the trick is to sell yourself in the right light. Sucky things happen!!! Sometimes it’s our GPA. sometimes it’s lack of a masters.

There are also a few funded masters programs that serve as pretty good pipelines to PhDs. Wake Forest is probably the biggest one, but I think Villanova and William and Mary also provide funding. If you search this forum, there have been people discussing them in past threads. Those are the 3 I remember off the top of my head.

For any other University of Florida (UF) counseling psychology applicants- I spoke with one of the admission peeps! Basically said they had over 600 applicants this term and they’ll probably be sending out the rest of the invites between the next two weeks! Keep your hopes up!

Thanks for the update! I’m too nervous to reach out to my contact for updates, I almost feel like bothering folks makes me feel like little Timmy. “Please sir, an update please”

Hey there! I actually got an official interview from Washington State and so did another member of my lab who applied to a different POI. The department has already met but it's possible that other faculty members are on different timelines.

I also just (like 10 mins ago) got a formal interview from Washington State, so they're not quite finished sending them out. Good luck to whoever else applied!

Shared this in the slack but wanted to post here just in case anyone else has had a similar experience. Was offered an interview (my first and only as of now), was pretty excited about it but yesterday got an email from my POI that they will no longer be accepting a student due to them accepting a position at another university. Huge bummer but more aggravating because I had a prelim with them back in Nov and it was never even mentioned as a possibility. I know things change but its just disheartening at this point especially when I'm seeing my other schools all over the results page.

I am so sorry that this happened to you. You did not deserve that, especially if the PI knew in advance that they were exploring other career opportunities

Unfortunately, this is just how things work for academic faculty; they tend to look after their own self-interests first. Unless they’ve already committed to accepting a new job position, they don’t want to scare away good mentees for their lab if they ultimately decide to stay; and so, faculty tend to not disclose their consideration of transferring out.

Congrats!!!! May I ask which university? Also, how what do you think made you stand out in your prelim? Any tips? Thanks:)
