Anthropology Waiting/Results 2012

If you are looking for something more specific try googling - when i was looking for a paleoanth field school i googled just that and found lots of info. Field schools can be expensive but if you stay in the US then it shouldn't be more then $1-2000, I went to the Caribbean for 5 weeks for $5000, but that was a beach vacay/ arky field school in one. Both of the field schools that i have been on accepted students from other schools and i think that is fairly typical. As for entry level positions - i am from Alberta, Canada and huge international companies like Golder hire recent grads to do CRM field work all the time. See if they have anything in your area?

I am right now working in CRM in the US. Another good website is archaeologyfieldwork.com, which is where I've found most of my jobs. Some of the bigger companies were hit hard in the recession, but smaller companies have weathered the storm and are doing well. Send them your resume even if they say 3+ years of experience. It's just their way of saying that they want you to have a degree.

Yah they offered a 5 years, Enhanced Chancellor's Fellowship and a Mellon; the Mellon is an internal nomination and won't be announced until this week or next. Keep in mind though, this entails teaching 2 classes per semester years 2-5.

Hi Pinkie,

You and I should be friends :-) I spent last year in Italy for my MA, and contemplated studying Italian immigration, but I realized that the topic would be better studied on this side of the Atlantic.

Sorry to be MIA, I took a week or so off from these boards – last week was rough, with three rejections in as many days. I am going to write UT Austin today (the only school that has not officially turned me down yet) to see if they will at least shut the door on this year so that I can go on with my life.

I am a little discouraged, but not deterred. I have been in touch with my mentor from my MA, and he emphasized that every school in the US is under one sort of financial strain or another – the private unis are still trying to recover from the hits to their endowments taken during the financial crisis, and the publics have to deal with an adverse state funding environment. He saw my statement of purpose, transcripts, etc., and wrote a very strong letter of rec, and he says he "doesn't know how to interpret this outcome" and encourages me to reapply, because the outcome may be very different in a year or two.

I'm making plans to raise my profile and make myself a stronger candidate for next year: retake the GREs, try to get a paper published, take an anthro course or two at my alma amter during the summer or fall. I will also apply to some of the Spanish and Italian departments that allow you to focus on linguistics. My MA school is very well regarded in foreign language and lit departments, but might not be well-known outside those circles, so maybe it didn't help me for anthro. I'm determined that this time next year, I will be celebrating at least one admit, whether it's to an anthro department or a Romance Linguistics program.

I was thinking that if I didn't get into PhD programs this time around (I'm still waiting on that one school...) maybe I would go to Italy and get a masters. My BA is in Italian and I've lived with a host family for 2 years but I'm a bit hesitant mainly because I haven't spoken in 4 years (tutors here and there but nothing stable)! I guess I'll try and see what happens, can I ask where you got your MA? Any thoughts for an American thinking about doing a master's abroad?

American U update: It appears that American has extended the first round of funded PhD offers. I'm in purgatory. Um, yeah, I mean on the waitlist. Best of luck to everyone as the season winds down!

At this point, though, I almost certainly won't hear anything until after April 15th. Grr. Still, out of the five that I applied to, it was tied for my top choice, so I will wait it out.

Oh, and to whoever said that UT Austin was almost certainly going to accept only people who brought in outside funding, here's what the admissions coordinator just told me, verbatim:

One of the issues that we've encountered this year is not that we are unable to admit students without funding but that our funding mechanism has changed somewhat and this has delayed our responses. Many apologies for that predicament.

Suffice it to say, UT Austin is now notifying admits (and presumably their outright rejects), and there is a waiting list, which some tortured souls (such as yours truly) have to sit on until after the April 15th acceptance deadline. While it doesn't feel good to be second banana, this is my last chance, and sitting around doing odd jobs and biding my time for another 18 months would be a much blacker prospect.

Pinkie, I'll write you a private message with the rest of the info, as it's not really pertinent to this thread, and I don't want to clutter it up for people who are looking for information on this application season for anthropology programs.

I'm Cultural (studying body modification, systems of privilege/power and the racial/gendered readings of modified bodies in contemporary US society); how about you? My field site is actually D.C., so AU was a great fit for me in a number of ways, lol.

I'm really hoping that they wouldn't offer me an admit to their MA program - better to outright reject me than offer me a degree I already have. I guess I'll be checking my email compulsively for the next few days, but at this point, I'll just be happy for some sort of closure. I'm thankful that I won't have to go through this again, at least; I hope that one of your wait list spots opens up! Good luck!

I'm also sociocultural; my area is food access/public policy/discourses of health, race & poverty. I can see why you'd be into American. I know a student there who's doing fieldwork in DC, too. FYI, the NSF won't fund your living costs if your field site is in the same city as your university. She filled her budget with other costs, but how bizarre, huh?

And for what it's worth, my field site is NYC, and I was rejected from CUNY! What a convoluted process. Best of luck wherever you end up!

I received an email today from my POI from UT San Antonio (Ecological Anthropology) about being accepted. TA-ship and Scholarship, but it still wont cover tuition...Still, excited!

I think that Stanford sent letters to both their admits and their waitlists a few weeks ago. I got rejected by Sonoma State University - MA CRM - Was my dream school.

I got into Northern Arizona University, Flagstaff - MA Anthropology (Archaeology) - Second choice

I am very lucky; these are the only two schools I applied with and my first year applying. Sooo luckly.

Congrats on the other offer! I'm just waiting for the letter from them to put this process to rest for a few months and then prepare to apply next year. I can't finish my master's with all this uncertainty hanging overhead.

Actually, I haven't heard from CU, but I know people who were accepted, and that was two weeks ago, so don't think there's much chance at this point.

aelizabeth and anzaria and anyone else still waiting on U of Az, they really still have not sent out letters, at least on the archaeology side of things. My POI is apparently getting annoyed about it, but funding is totally up in the air. I guess they aren't sending letters until they figure that out? There were 97 archaeology applicants, but I don't know how many they accept. It seems like a pretty big department overall (but I'm a Classicist, so I don't know how it compares to other anthropology departments), so there's still hope.
