Nothing today. Hope for the best tomorrow.

By the end of next week I should know for sure if I have or haven't into two of my programs. One more week and I'll be filled with despair or relief. :)

I got rejected from 2 programs on the same day three weeks ago, and I haven't heard a single thing from my remaining 9 apps since. My anxiety is out of control and I just want to drink a bunch of whiskey and cry at this point tbh.

Tell me about it. I have a cold and read that there's more evidence that whiskey cocktails help symptoms more than there is for cough syrup. So I'm at least taking all the whiskey excuses I can. More whiskey, plz.

That's really good to know. We should all have a gallon of hot toddies apiece.

How's this for awkward:

I'm taking a course remotely, and at the beginning of the semester the professor scheduled phone conversations with every student to get to know us better, try to minimize hurdles that come with distance learning, etc. My scheduled time to meet with her via phone is tomorrow. She happens to be on the AdCom. The application deadline was Jan. 15th so the decisions are probably not made yet, but surely they have gone through one or two rounds by now.

It's going to be sooooo hard to not scream out "I don't want to talk about the class! Tell me if I'm on the shortlist or not! I'm dyin' here!!!!"

Getting to know you better? Haha. I can imagine:

Prof: So, what are your hobbies? Why did you pick this course?
You: Hobbies? You know, the usual, applying to PhD programs and waiting anxiously.

I'm sure you'll do fine though- good luck with the call. :)

Also, someone mentioned that tomorrow is Friday. Second Friday of Februgatory. I had forgotten. At least the house has whiskey for tomorrow night. :(

My entertainment this evening consisted of two coworkers arguing on our work Facebook page until the general manager shut it down. I'd like to thank them for making the time pass a little faster tonight.

Still no news on what could make or break my future though! ;)

Yay a bunch full of whiskey people!!! It is the drink that is single handedly getting me through my masters!

Also, to those who have been rejected/still waiting - keep your head up, your back up plans in mind and know that it's not over until it's over. I've recently been so ridiculously busy (I'm typing this on my phone as I head to the gym) that I haven't had a chance to check statuses or the results page here and it's minimised my stress 10-fold.

Day 3 (or 4 I'm not too sure) of not checking applications. I did have a weird admissions dream though.

Last Friday evening I got an email that my application was ready for review and I should expect a decision in 8-10 weeks. I also know that they do Skype interviews for 3/4 of the candidates. So I resigned myself to a wait. This morning (less than 5 working days later!) I received a horribly generic rejection letter. I thought I was a strong candidate for the program, definitely at least above the bottom 1/4! My ego wants to believe I hit some auto-rejection, but I honestly don't know what to make of it. It feels like a slap in the face.

Good luck everyone! Today might be a big notification day for acceptances--Valentine's Day present, getting things off the plate before Presidents Day weekend for schools who get it off, etc.

So one thing I'm doing while waiting (other than drinking and complaining) is working on a novel. As Februgatory pain intensifies, I've noticed my protagonist is getting increasingly more neurotic, going to dive bars, exhibiting nervous behavior, having nightmares and the like. I'm not sure this project is providing the artistic distraction I need.

What time do y'all conduct your daily admissions status check? I'm going to hold off until 1pm today to give the west coast some time to wake up, haha.

Hopefully today will be a big day! I have two schools who have sent out acceptances, rejections, and waitlists. In large numbers. And to me? nothing of course. Plus I just came down sick so I'm kind of stuck at home.

I usually do two: in the morning and in the afternoon.

Makes me feel slightly better but I doubt I'll find anything.

Aaah, another late Friday morning without any news from any of the 5 schools I applied to. Time to watch a bad horror movie on netflix and turn off the computer.

I have a bit of a dilemma. I found out that one of my schools does rolling admissions and has a 3-4 week turn around. I submitted in November for a December 1st priority deadline. The actual deadline is Feb 15th. The website says they start making decisions on Feb 1st. So is this bad news for me or do you think that it is rolling admissions starting on Feb 1st? I can't imagine why they would have a priority deadline of Dec 1st if they don't start making decisions until February. I'm confused and now I really want to email admissions and ask them what's up but I don't want to be annoying. I'm afraid this means rejection though.

I would email them. It's possible that something is putting your application on hold (missing information). Just send an email stating that you submitted for a Dec. 1st deadline and were inquiring about the status of your application.

Another acceptance just went up at the school I interviewed with yesterday. Is it odd they'd be interviewing people as they're accepting them?

Is it possible that they are in different subfields? Maybe the other subfields were chosen/accepted and the one you interviewed with hasn't made their recommendations?

For whatever it's worth, I don't think they'd interview you just to reject you. I assume they have an open slot that they imagine you in (especially since you already attend the school). They probably wanted to discuss it with you (especially if you didn't apply directly to that subfield) to gauge your interest long-term.

I'm kind of in a similar situation but not completely. my school has a deadline of jan. 1 but i talked to 2 people who submitted after the deadlines and both got interviews really early while i'm still waiting for an interview that's never going to come. lol. i don't think there's anything wrong with emailing admissions. but email the school in general where grad admission inquiries usually go and not someone specific or the department itself.

@nevermind thanks, yeah I think the acceptances were in a slightly different subfield but the POI mentioned the adcom wanted him to talk to me specifically because he's an expert in what I want to do, so they wanted more clarity. Before the interview he said they were looking at their top candidates to guage the fit. Plus he seemed interested to know it was my top choice. I just wonder when I'll hear!

Thanks @nevermind and @raaawr. I've emailed them. I felt I should ask because when I see emailing admissions brought up on here most people tell the person not to. But because my application has been in since late November I'm not just being ridiculously impatient. Hopefully I get some good news. Or at least something other than rejection.

I usually do my checks in the morning, and then again before bed. In between, I let myself go about my day to try and avoid any anxiety-inducing trains of thought. I had a rough go of that yesterday getting 2 rejection letters within 10 minutes of each other.

However, I am trying my best to keep my head up. I have 4 schools left, which are objectively better shots than the 3 schools I got rejection letters from already.

Though, it does suck to have to make a concrete back-up plan instead of just knowing there has to be one, in case things go south.

Also related: beer is good. my BFF is taking me out for beer and shots tonight to help take my mind off this.

In past years my top two schools have sent out decisions Valentine's weekend. I am trying so hard to not check my email every two minutes... but I'm still checking my email every two minutes.
