CBG321 got a reaction from CaidanFire in When to give up? SLP Grad School
Here’s the deal keep trying, IF you are willing to put in the work and retake the GRE.  If you don’t plan on retaking the GRE you are sending the message you don’t really want this.  That’s how schools interpret the same scores most will intentionally look at the test and see you’ve had plenty of time to retake it in 4 years and have chosen not to.  Then they look at the GPA and see a 3.2 below average. (Sorry!!)
It is extremely unlikely anyone will look to see that it was due to science classes at this point.  If you raise your verbal GRE you are showing effort and they might say well this is weird her GRE is this...wonder why her GPA was so low?
The people on here telling you to focus on non gre schools fail to mention that most of those schools require amazing GPAs to compensate.  3.8+ and one school I’m aware of is 3.9 and 4.0s only unless you are from their program.  CSU San Marcos will not accept those scores.  I was interviewed there and they have a rigorous program that is academically demanding.
I worked in admissions at my school so know what the application process looks like.  My school was more hands on than the majority of programs and still had some basic #s they looked at before reviewing the entire application.
They have hundreds of applications, focus on your verbal GRE bc as others have said if you don’t meet certain #s nobody will be reading your essay or resume or looking at the transcripts.  Hoping I don’t get down voted for being honest about the reality of admissions.
I’m not trying to discourage you, I’m trying to help you get in!!  You are capable of boosting the verbal GRE so focus your energy on that and I hope you get in!!  Manhattan GRE prep books are good and their vocabulary flash cards are really helpful.
Good luck you CAN do this ?
P.S- being waitlisted is a sign to keep going.  That means they like the other parts of your application!!

CBG321 got a reaction from emilymstar in UT Dallas application- confused about my status
Hi I went there and worked at the school too.  It is an error message that is sent to every single applicant who does not have an official transcript on file.  They have asked the IT department to change it for years, but bc all other programs there require the official transcripts they haven’t been able to change it for the 1 program that takes unofficial transcripts.
The email is not sent from the department it is sent from the university system and has no impact on your application.
They have been on break so that’s why you are having trouble hearing back they have at least 3 weeks off between semesters.
Dr. Stillman typically personally emails accepted students to offer them admission to the program.  The process can take months bc a first round of people are accepted and the program has to wait for their decision before they can offer those spots to the next applicant.  They’re most likely in the process of making those first offers.
It is an amazing program good luck!!

CBG321 reacted to bibliophile222 in My program is toxic. I need to find a better school. Do you know of schools with NO/FEW or a very standard set of prerequisites?
Since you won't even give us a list of the prereqs you've already taken or any other information that can help us give helpful advice, all I can say is to make a list of schools you may be interested in, then go to their websites and one by one check their lists of prereqs. If you're going to be this vague, you may just have to bite the bullet and figure it out yourself. Unfortunately we are not omniscient, and we can't really tell what you need other than a supportive program (which can be subjective based on individual needs) and a small amount of required prereqs (which may not even matter since you've already taken a year of prereqs).
Sorry if I sounded frustrated, but it's a common occurrence on Grad Cafe for someone to ask us to recommend a program (or offer a thesis topic, research proposal, etc) without giving any helpful details or having done any research on their own, and I guess I've read too many of those posts. We're willing to help, but we're not being nosy, we actually have to know, and figuring things out on your own is also an important life skill!
That being said, maybe try to find another 3-year program, since you may be able to just take one or two more classes before starting your grad level courses and can graduate sooner. Or narrow down a list of 2-year programs that only require an additional one or two classes and take those through ENMU, Utah State, or another relatively cheap online program. The whole positive environment piece may just have to come from your experience visiting and talking to current students to feel the vibe.

Flexibility and pay will never be enough of a reason to enroll in any program if you don't love the field. I think one of the best quotations I've heard is this:
"Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life."

There are plenty of jobs out there that offer flexible scheduling, decent pay and benefits. No job is worth it if you feel the stress will continue and you'll have a mounting debt.

Actually, observation hours do not roll over into clinical clock hours (though that would be great!). Clinical clock hours only relate to direct client contact with a supervisor and the stipulations are a bit more strict.

I think UTD is the best!!!  Alumni here, just wanted to chime in that it is completely worth the risk/effort to apply!  I think an in person program will always be able to teach you more, the clinical opportunities are outstanding and there is no substitute in my opinion.  The main GPA they look at is your bachelors but they will also see your masters gpa.  Going for a tour is a good idea too!

Umm so just on the car note, that is a lot to expect out of a classmate you haven't even met yet.  You guys will be on different clinic schedules probably even if classes line up.  To add grocery shopping on top of that is not something I'd see working out.  I'd look into public transportation.
Unless you have a roommate who is also in the program I'd expect that classmates will not have enough extra time to accommodate both your schedules.

Study super hard and retake your GRE!  That's really all you can do at this point, you can continue to maintain relationships with professors so your LORS aren't average too.  Maybe some lab work would help.  Good luck!

CBG321 got a reaction from colormespeech in Spring Admission v. Fall Admission: Tips for Re-Applying
I second everything the above poster said with some additional steps.  As much as it will suck study with Magoosh or take a prep class and attempt to improve your scores.  Even if you don't it shows that you were willing to make an effort.  I would see reappliers apply to my program without changing a single thing on their application.  The appearance of a lack of effort I feel is more impactful than the lower scores when reapplying.  Have something to show tangibly how much you want this.  This is just from an admissions viewpoint, I'm sure you're working really hard towards this goal it just needs to show on their end.  Also I've heard of worse scores your writing was fantastic and verbal was also good my math was lower as well maybe you could bump the verbal up just enough to clear a combined 300!
Lastly I'd make some attempt at explaining why your GPA was so low did you make an effort to be tutored?  Were you working 40 hours a week, etc etc.. Grad school is academically rigorous and most programs cannot let you graduate without a 3.0-3.5 GPA average.  So if you think you can earn that GPA in the more difficult grad classes I'd explain how bc they are taking the risk that you won't academically be able to graduate so I would address that and be able to explain why that won't be an issue.  This is not to discourage you but to help you prove to schools you can succeed whereas your academic stats might paint a different picture.
    Goodluck!

CBG321 got a reaction from Want2banSLP in Communication Sciences and Disorders: CSUF vs. CHAPMAN???
I apologize that this will be a bit negative but i've heard from friends at both programs that both programs have some problems with organization.  I met both of these friends because I was enrolled in CSUF's post bacc program.  One friend is in Fullerton's grad program the other friend is in Chapman's graduate program.  This is not to say you won't be perfectly fine and learn what you need to learn while you're there.
I do think that Fullerton's program might take a little longer, but I haven't checked on that.  My friend at Fullerton almost had to complete an additional semester/year due to the lack of organization at Fullerton.  My friend at Chapman hasn't given me any specifics but has told me she wishes the program was organized better.  If at all possible try to reach out to some current graduate students.  Maybe you can contact the programs and ask to be given a current student's name willing to talk to you?  If it's a challenge to get ahold of someone take that as a sign!!!
I know this is mostly negative but know you are going to be fine in either program, you just may need to be really on top of stuff in order to make sure the administration isn't dropping the ball on your education/clinical opportunities.  Good luck!

You'd probably be better off doing your own research by looking at stats on ASHA's website edfind.  You can look at each school's past accepted students.  Asking on here will not give you a full list of schools that might accept you.  So many people tend to just google for a quick answer, and that doesn't really help you get in anywhere.  Good luck!

I think a lot of schools that don't look at GRE scores expect super high GPA's since that is the only academic number they have.  With a 3.7 you might have more acceptances at schools that also look at GRE scores!  To those schools your GPA is more in range I'd think.

As a non-major you're going to need to be applying to programs that accept people that haven't done any of the prereqs, as I'm sure you know. I believe ASHA's edfind has a list of schools that will accept students without prereqs, so if you haven't checked that out I would definitely take a look on their website! They will probably have links to their websites and maybe stats for non-majors applying to the program. You could also contact schools if you're interested in their programs!
As @CBG321 said, schools that don't look at GRE tend to accept people with super high GPAs, and also tend to get SWAMPED with applications. For example, CSU: Fullerton doesn't take GREs and had 500 people apply for 28 spots. Most of the students they took at a GPA between a 3.8-4.0. The quantitative section of the GRE isn't a huge deal for this field though, so if you are able to do well on verbal, get around a 50 percentile score on quant, and 4.0 on AW you'd still be in a good place. Even if you got slightly lower than 50th percentile, you'd probably still be competitive in those programs. You also have a good GPA and your research experience will looks amazing on apps.
I wish you the BEST of luck on the GRE!!! I took it about a month ago and the entire process of studying, taking it, and waiting for results was so stressful lol. You're gonna feel AMAZING when it's done!

CBG321 got a reaction from Louly in Should I get a B.A.? before grad school
It isn't necessary to go back and get a second Bachelor's degree, however not getting a post-baccalaureate limits the number of schools you can apply to as an out of field student.  Before considering pursuing Speech Pathology keep in mind it is an extremely competitive field.  Take a look at your GPA and take the GRE if your GPA was below 3.6 getting in will be difficult.  Just as hard if not harder than the job with the BA in Psychology.  You'll need 3 letters of recommendation as well, most schools prefer from Professors.
What got you interested in Speech Pathology?  It's a great field but if you are wanting something that is more of a guarantee another field might be easier to get into and gain a job quicker.  You can apply to other Master's programs without prerequisites in the field.
I'd say at this point it would take at least 4 years since Fall semester has already started so you'd be looking at  start date of Fall 2018 for most programs and then 2-3 years depending on the program IF you get in your first try.  Then 9 months for your CF which you get paid for then regular career.  If you are comfortable with that timeline and have the grades go for it!

CBG321 got a reaction from SpeechLaedy in This level of debt sorta scares me..
HOLY smokes that is a chunk of money.  I'd go buy a Dave Ramsey book now and start planning your financial plan.  Have you already exhausted all financial options at the school such as an assitantship or any form or work-study?  I'd think about getting a job as well to try and underscore some of those expenses.  I agree it is a great investment in your future but not having a life and working to pay off debt sounds very stressful.

It is really unfortunate how expensive it is to get a degree in this field.  I say just exhaust all your options on making money and get a plan in place so it can reduce the stress you're feeling about it.  They really don't give us a lot of options.

Maybe be a waitress at a good tipping restaurant the summer before you go?  It sucks but you can make thousands of dollars in a VERY short period of time.  I paid for a 3 week vacation abroad completely on tip money!    You can do this just be a money saving machine!

Echoing what someone else said about Arizona and Texas. I'd look into some smaller schools in states that aren't as "popular." Large schools like Arizona State or UT will get more applicants because of the location and the name recognition. Definitely try to get your GRE up but if you can't there are a few schools that don't require the GRE.

Saying this gently, but with your GPA, I would encourage you to look long and hard at why it's so low before attempting another field with notoriously difficult classes like nursing. The science pre-reqs for nursing are harder than CSD classes. I was pre-med for the 1st half of my 1st UG degree and before I settled on SLP, I actually looked into direct-entry MSN programs. I would have had to retake all those difficult science classes since they were more than 7 years old. I didn't want to be a nurse badly enough to do that.
Now if your low GPA is due to maturity issues causing bad grades early on while your last 60 GPA is a lot higher, then maybe you'd have a shot.

I had a two year gap before I went back to school and I was fine not studying. I was also an SLPA, so that may have contributed to it. You will be fine. Trust me. If anything just go over ipa and see what you are taking your first semester and go over that. No point in refreshing something that you won't learn again until spring or later because it won't be fresh on your mind.

I respectfully disagree with the idea that you may be depressed.  I think you put all your efforts, time and commitment into something that seems to have not worked out and are now questioning what to do with your life/career.

I think it is TOTALLY normal to feel frustrated, upset and confused at this point.  We are just seeing one aspect of your life in this comment so of course if these bad feelings have not gone away and you're constantly feeling awful, of course try to lift your spirits.

If you are only upset about your career and school experience.  That is completely understandable and normal especially having just graduated from an intense program that didn't benefit you at all so far.

Have you considered going to a career counselor?  Or take some time off and travel. Taking some time to be reminded that most people treat you like a human being with feelings will help shake away the bitter associations of your jerky teachers and college experience.

I know it's a tough spot to be in, hang in there you'll find something great to do in life.  I'm an older student and haven't gotten my career yet (gotta go to grad school lol) but the point is you have a lot of time, even though it may not feel like it.  And to me your feelings  100% justified, they don't scream depressed at all to me!

Your feelings are a product of your awful negative school environment.  I hope we can all do our part in changing those horrible experiences in the future and holding Professors accountable for how they treat their students!!

    Good luck with everything
