  1. I got my rejection email from Kansas today. I'm not sure if interview invites have gone out yet.
  2. How many students per faculty member do most schools accept per year? For example, if there are 6 faculty members accepting students each head6, would only 6 people be accepted, or possibly 12?
  3. I have found a lot of "kisses of death" or interview faux pas from the APA and other sources. Anyone have resources on things to absolutely avoid?
  4. Thank you so much, that's super helpful! Those are definitely back up programs, so late response is okay (maybe. Lol) I unfortunately don't meet the requirements for UTSA, although it looks really great!
  5. No way, schizometric! Will you be interviewing in person, or skype/phone?
  6. Also, I have 2 changes to my Master's applications- M.S. In Clinical Psychology UT Tyler M.S. Psychological Sciences UT Dallas
  7. School Name: Louisiana Tech University Status: Interview invitation Degree : PhD Type: Counseling Psychology Notified via: email From: Program director and graduate coordinator Details: All day Saturday event, including a social. They seem very friendly! Also, I totally thought I was out for this application (lacking materials, long story.) So imagine my surprise, but also very thrilled!
  8. Yes, only a few. Applying to one that leads to LPA or continuation into doctoral studies.
  9. Thank you all so much, @Extra Espresso @hopefulPhD2017 @fuzzylogician (love the cat btw!) I feel a lot more confident after that perspective. I'm starting to look forward to my upcoming interview, I think it will be great. Also, definitely prepping on the POI as much as possible. I am genuinely interested in their experience, they have a lot of it! Thanks again!
  10. It was a little more honest than I was suspecting, but I'm a blunt person so I can understand their honesty. C'est la vie!
  11. I have my first interview in a few weeks for a doctoral program in Counseling Psychology. There are 5 faculty POI's, and I'm uncertain if each POI takes on one or two students. This school and POI are an almost perfect fit for me in every way. During the interview process, should my focus be on proving myself as a competitive candidate, or showing how I am a good fit? I think it will be quite easy to show that I fit in very well, but since I lack certain aspects of competitiveness I am a little insecure. My plan is to be prepared, be myself, and be as social as possible with everyone. I do bring a different background than many applicants that I hope works to my advantage. TIA!
  12. Glad you started this! School: Oklahoma State UniversityArea/Degree: Counseling Psychology PhDRationalization: "Your application was not competitive." My research interests were not the best fit with the school's emphasis. Comment:I suspected this and am not surprised.Coping tactics: None needed, focusing on my other applications. Having a difficult year so I let it roll off my back.
  13. I'm not sure if we are posting rejections here, but what the heck! School Name: Oklahoma State University Status: Rejection pre-interview Degree: PhDType: Counseling PsychologyNotified via: EmailFrom: Mass email Comments: My application wasn't considered competitive (their words,) which is true. School has a different research focus than what I am interested in.
  14. I would think that any cultural attire is considered fine, especially in this field. You could always ask the graduate students their take if you aren't sure. In a past graduate interview (counseling program), at least 3 women in the group had nose/other facial piercings. They looked professional, and the interview panel didn't mind (they were accepted.)
  15. Super thankful for this thread! I have a great skirt suit for the interview, but I'm considering what to wear for the student social. I have a yellow blazer that I pair with a black and white striped skirt, black tights and flats. Would this business casual outfit be too formal or colorful for the social? It's something I feel confident in, but I could always dress it down.
  16. This might be a strange question, but any advice on interviewing when your POI is much older and a different gender than you? I want to make sure I am taken seriously. I might need to tone down my normal "bubbly-ness."
  17. School Name: Texas A&M University Date Interview Invite Received: 01/10/2017 Degree: PhDType: Counseling PsychologyNotified via: EmailFrom: Doctoral Student Interview Date: February 2nd-3rd Additional Info: Student social Thursday evening. Interview all day Friday. This is a top choice school for me and I'm pretty shocked but excited I got an interview!
  18. My plan A is to get accepted into a doctoral program in Counseling Psychology, and become a licensed psychologist. If I only get accepted into Master's programs, I am wondering whether a Master's in Counseling Psychology versus a Master's in Clinical Psychology would be better? For reference, my undergraduate degree is in Special Education w/core hours in Psychology. I meet prerequisites, but I don't have research experience. I want to do as much research as possible, which is why a Clinical program may be ideal for me. My research interests are mainly in Health Psychology, chronic disease, and disability which seem to be well suited for clinical psychology. If I did a Master's in Clinical Psych I would go on to complete a doctoral program. Here are some of my pros and cons: Counseling Psychology MS: Can apply to doctoral program during second year, essentially transferring to doctoral (potentially.) Less likely to be a Licensed Psychological Associate (LPA.) More likely to be a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC.) Housed in larger universities. Shorter time to Ph.d Clinical Psychology MS: Research seems to be better suited for my interests. Faster time to completion. Can go on to complete doctoral study in a medical center. Clear path to be LPA. Clinical doctoral programs are notoriously difficult to get into/may time a lot of time and money. Will take longer to Ph.d I would love any input from people that have completed Master's programs, or are applying to them. TIA!
  19. I got an email two days ago from The University of Kansas saying that they are currently working on applications, and to apply for FAFSA and GA. So looks like they should be notifying soon, for Counseling Psychology PhD and Master's.
  20. Chary seems like one of those words you make up while playing Scrabble.
  21. As much as I adore vocabulary, mine would be garrulous: full of trivial conversation. That word was on the actual GRE for me. I had zero roots or orthographic patterns I could use. I challenge anyone to slip it into casual conversation without feeling like they're dropping a two-ton cement block.
  22. I beg your pardon! As a highland sheep-shearer I use flocculent daily! Just kidding. The sound of that word cracks me up.
  23. An infinite amount, I think partly because of the very low acceptance rates. Even though I applied to Psychology programs, I'm in Counseling Psych and applied to the geographical region of the South/Deep South where admissions seems to be slow. It seems to also be regional and based on due dates. Since Clinical Psychology has so many applicants and so few accepted, they begin the process much earlier to whittle down the numbers.
  24. I'm applying to Counseling/Clincial Psych programs. I provided both an overview of research topics, and specific articles I want to expound on. I did not drone on and on about my research, but I did explain what I wanted to research with detail. I modeled my SOP after a great example I read. 2 pages, direct and to the point. I don't think you need to give every single detail of your research interests in Psych, partly due to the fact that flexibility is key. You may (definitely?) end up working on research different than what is in your SOP. Since I am an application virgin I decided to read countless examples. I would guess that the admission panel will appreciate brevity. And if it makes you feel any better, I almost finished an application for a school when I was made aware that I lacked the prerequisites. I had to finish anyway(already paid the money,) but lesson learned.
