  1. School: Texas A&M University Area/degree: Counseling Psychology PhD Rationalization: Other applicants were more competitive. Comment: Honestly, the whole process did not go well for me. Coping tactics: With all of the bad experiences I had during interview weekend, I consider it fate that I'm not going there.
  2. That is very helpful to know. I have health needs and can't comfortably take on a lot of debt. I have no idea if the school in mind could possibly adjust the funding, but I am definitely sad that it's the one thing holding me back. I will bring it up and see what happens. My reason is pretty clear, but I'm not sure if the school can add to it.
  3. I applied to a doctoral program in Louisiana. I love it to death, and gladly would go except the funding is very low. Especially coming from Texas, the funding for students here is over 2x the amount. I have talked to students in grad school in LA but I really don't want to accrue a large amount of federal loans. Does anyone have any ideas of the funding options in the state?
  4. Yes. I would say it depends on the program. At a top school, they've been pretty stoic. At a smaller school, the whole process seems to be more relaxed and the interviewers more friendly. If everyone at the interview was that way, including students, that might be odd. But if it's just the faculty, very normal.
  5. Don't be competitive to the point of putting people down or being rude, unless that is how you want to be remembered. Put-downs or passive aggressiveness make insecurity obvious. My two cents.
  6. Hello all, this season I have mostly applied to Counseling Psychology doctoral programs but am also going to re-apply to the same schools for their Educational Psychology/School Psychology programs. I'm wondering how competitive School Psych is?
  7. No I'm not! I'm in the Deep South but glad to know I have a doppelgänger! ?
  8. For bags: My mom lent me a great black bookbag. It's not giant, just wide enough to fit my leather portfolio/notebook and everything else. I can easily tuck it under a chair. As for hair: Mine is medium length, but I'm pulling half back. I'm thinking of doing a half french braid around the crown, cute and also I won't need to fidget with it. For the social, I'm wearing it wavy.
  9. That's great! That's exactly what I'm looking for in a program. And very great that you have presented so much research.
  10. I had a group interview where they asked the 6 of us to solve problems as a group. It actually turned out pretty fun, and everyone was very non-threatening and agreeable. I will be interviewing in my group for the whole day this week. I will let you know how that goes!
  11. Most of the Master's programs in Counseling psych will be less competitive, but they still may not take a large number of applicants. The ones I have seen at top universities take a max of 10 students. The selection criteria will be a little less than doctoral. IMO I would say applying to more programs would be a good idea. I have applied to 2 schools for both the doctoral program and the master's program. One rejected me for both, the other invited me to interview for their counseling program. The good thing about Master's acceptance is that they likely will require less research experience.
  12. Then you have to sort of look at their reputation. Most of the MS programs in Clinical Psych that I have seen are in smaller branches of major universities. Although, even Harvard and some of the Ivy's have programs, but they may not necessarily fit your goals. The one I am interested in is a feeder program for medical Clinical doctoral programs, and also can prepare you for licensure.
  13. My method was arduous, but I ended up searching for all of the universities in states I was interested in, then searching their graduate Psychology programs. Another option would be searching ex. "Graduate psychology programs Mississippi." It was fairly easy to find M.S. programs in my home state, luckily. There aren't any rankings I have seen for Master's programs in Clinical Psych.
  14. Thank you- great advice! I have severe food allergies so on top of snacks will pack my emergency kit. Hope I don't need it during the interview weekend. lol
  15. Oh no! Clinical Psychology is so stressful and competitive! Fortunately I am very happy about one of my back ups- MS in Clinical Psych to obtain licensure as a psychology associate.
  16. Here in Texas you can become a Licensed Psychology Associated with a Master's, so we have a few terminal programs in Clinical Psych.
  17. I've applied to a Master's in Clinical Counseling, research psychology, and clinical psychology. My goal is acceptance in doctoral Counseling Psychology, but my backup plan is the MS in Clinical Psych.
  18. I would second the RA, but my backup plan is to do a Master's in Psychology research as well as being an RA. It's a feeder program for Clinical Psych and typically makes applicants competitive.
  19. School name: University of Oklahoma Date interview invite received: 1/27 Degree/Type: Counseling Master's Notified via: email Interview date: March 31st Comments: Deferred from Counseling Psychology to this program. Professional counseling program leading to licensure.
  20. Unfortunately I can't help you with decision making, but while my target is doctoral Counseling Psychology I have two back up programs. One is a M.S. in Clinical Psychology where I can also complete research, the other is M.S. in Psychology Research which is a feeder program for Clinical doctoral. I hope something works out for you!
  21. Awesome, good luck! My choice is University of Texas at Tyler, their whole Psychology department seems amazing.
  22. Note that this is an assumed rejection, but the interview is tomorrow. Lol School: University of North TexasArea/Degree: Counseling Psychology PhDRationalization: I did not meet the prerequiste 24 hours of psychology courses.Comment: I knew I would not be invited. Coping tactics: None needed.
  23. Now that interviews are approaching for many of us, how are you all preparing? I've found a lot of helpful information from the APA, granted for Clinical Psychology interviews. I thought about writing down answers to potential questions all across the board, not memorizing though. Currently studying POI's work as much as is healthy. lol
  24. School: The University of KansasArea/Degree: Counseling Psychology PhD ProgramRationalization: Was not as competitive/lack of fit and funding.Comment: I would have turned them down anyway at this point.Coping tactics: Preparing for upcoming interviews.
