UNC and Northwestern within about 20 minutes. Brutal. Waiting on Berkeley for the triple threat.
-
nvm, it's been confirmed in the facebook group chat
-
They were one of the latest to release last year. And I don't think they generally do phone acceptances either
-
Can anyone claim the UNC acceptance? I'm suspicious

It's up there. I applied to the joint philosophy and law program. Since there seems to be a coordinated admissions process between the two departments, I'm not even sure if I can expect to hear back at the same time as others who only applied to the PhD.

It was the 26th last year. I wouldn't hold my breath for today as they could come out next week. Hope I'm wrong
-
I got rejected from Brown yesterday too, as did everyone in my program who applied there (that I know of). This was the first decision I've gotten back. Waiting on 25.

two people in fact

I worked on it for 5 months. Hours is hard to gauge-- probably hundreds.

Chances of Acceptance in Philosophy MA Programs
akraticfanatic replied to jackb97's topic in Philosophy
Hey OP, you should definitely consider applying to Brandeis (though I believe they do require GREs). I'm a current MA student, happy to answer questions if you PM me. Unrelated: I'm SUPER interested in reading your writing sample if you're willing to share!!- 16 replies

My AOIs are social/political/legal analytic philosophy and epistemology. My writing sample overlaps these interests. I'm currently an MA student at Brandeis (happy to answer questions about that). I'm applying to ~24 PGR-ranked philosophy PhD programs and ~14 law schools. I'm especially interested in talking to other people who are applying for both philosophy and law!

Congrats!!

PHILOSOPHY M.A. ACCEPTANCE/REJECTION 2018

They haven't sent out rejections-- pretty sure they have a secret waitlist. Everything from them is super late this year :/- 222 replies

I'm not trying to sound harsh but in all honesty, if you have to test the hypothesis then it's self-refuting. Don't do it if you're not sure it's what you want. It's a hell of a life.

I'm finishing up my undergrad at UMB right now. I suggest looking in Dorchester or Quincy-- make sure it's accessible to a subway station (or at least bus stop) if you don't have a car. My partner and I were lucky enough to find an affordable (relative to other apartments in Boston, that is) apartment in Savin Hill, basically walking distance from campus. If you're on Facebook, I recommend joining the Queer Exchange Boston group and asking around there for both housing and events/social stuff!

You're right! My bad, I must not have read the whole post...
-
I mean, I am an undergrad, so that's how I'm going to be viewed regardless.
-
Hmm, I've been told to include it if the GPA is good. Is there any harm in including it?

I'm going to Brandeis for an MA in philosophy this fall, and plan to apply to PhD programs after that. I took the GRE last summer and scored 169V/155Q/4.0W. The verbal is good and the quantitative is fine for this field, but the writing score is not ideal. That being said, I don't know how I would really go about improving it. I did do a bunch of practice tests before taking the test. I'm also a good academic writer, generally get A's on papers and can definitely produce a solid writing sample. Any advice about whether to retake and if so, how to effectively study for the writing section?

I do, but partly because I transferred schools during my undergrad and I think it's useful for seeing the upward trend in my grades.
