Great idea! I'm in my final semester at UVM and am also available to answer any questions about life in grad school.

i think you should highlight how your background in child development might even make you a stronger candidate because you understand these family dynamics. assuming you might still want to work with children or youth, maybe you can tie this into your goals as it relates to what population and setting you would like to work with.

I have a 2.98 CGPA and ~3.49 in the field. I've been an SLPA for 3 years along with tons of work experience. In my SOI I talked about my GPA and sort of "explained it". I mentioned my CGPA is from 11 years of going to school part-time and my COMD GPA is from working over 50  hours a week while in school full time. I explained my GPA because I didn't want them to assume anything. I also really explained my passion for this field and that I am fluent in American Sign Langauge. My LORs came from my supervisors in the field and their letters were phenomenal! I would tell you to apply to as many schools as you can and remember ALL YOU NEED IS ONE!

I agree. I've heard hospital positions are competitive but schools and clinics are not as competitive.

I love my dry erase board. My friend got a me a bunch of items that she wished she'd had in grad school and that was one of my favorites. I used it a lot when practicing transcription in my speech sound disorders class. Very helpful!

Congratulations! I think it's important to remember that GPA truly isn't everything. I used to worry all the time but just finished my junior year and have a 3.4 cumulative, but a 3.8 CSD GPA. I would definitely calculate your CSD GPA (using only CSD classes --  hearing science, phonetics, sign language courses, etc.) and use that to boost your confidence a bit. Focusing on only your GPA can be a major cause of stress, especially in this field. Best of luck to you! There are very few feelings better than ending the semester with great grades so I hope you celebrated!

I agree with the above response! You're totally fine with one B especially with a 3.9. It just depends if it's really worth it to you to take the time to retake the class when you can put in your energy to other courses and application season!

I really feel for you and I'm sorry youre in this position! It would be worth applying again next round if you apply to much cheaper programs because if you decide to reapply and then go to a school that's 50K then that's one year that you could have been working for a regular salary lost and you're not really saving any money (you took out 25K less in loans but you lost 30K by not working one year with a full salary). Of course there's interest to be accounted for, whatever you'd make this coming year, and your cost of living situation but you get the point I'm making. Crunch the numbers and review your priorities. Also, I don't think people really get financial aid for these SLP programs the way people may get in UG (I've never heard of anyone getting any). I am also an independent with 0 family contribution and the only financial aid I'm getting is a GA position and I don't think I was given the position because of my financial situation. The rest is federal loans. It sucks!
I think 130 or 140K in debt is a lot on an SLP salary and would significantly impact quality of life. If I were you I would reapply next year to cheap state school (if there aren't any in your state then maybe consider moving to a near by state so you receive the in-state tuition?). It's such a tough decision good luck and sending good vibes your way!

Have you filled out the FAFSA yet? If not, do so immediately! It's not super hard, just kind of tedious. Grad students count as independent students, so unless you had a great career before entering grad school you'll probably qualify and get all the loans you need from that. You should end up with the Stafford loans (subsidized and unsubsidized). If you still need more than this and your credit is alright you can get Grad Plus loans to cover the total cost of attendance beyond what the Stafford loans offer, including living expenses. That's also done simply by filling out the FAFSA.
I have to say, going forward it would definitely behoove you to figure out the financial stuff as soon as possible. Money matters are no joke and can take time/effort to get things together. I've dillydallied with getting financial aid before and royally screwed myself because I missed a deadline. Going forward, check your school's financial aid page for any deadlines, call/email them if necessary, and check for any random requirements that could delay receiving your aid money!

Your CSD GPA is amazing and same goes with your GRE score (wow!), I am really shocked you didn't get into more schools.
Okay, if I were I would write a list of pros/cons about  NYU vs waiting to next year to reapply. Everyone on here has different things going on in their lives such as marriage, kids, job, etc and our decision would be based on that. With that being said, NYU is extremely expensive so that has to be taken into consideration and while Portland as other grad schools NYU is a reputable school so I am sure finding a placement wouldn't be an issue.
If I were you I would accept NYU because there is no guarantee that you will be accepted next year or the year after. I also would prefer not to go through the stress of applying, getting letters of rec, etc all over again. For me, the anxiety was almost unbearable, but that's my experience.
    Good Luck!

    DO. NOT. DO IT.
No one cares where you went to school, especially for a career like SLP. It is not worth paying off all that student loan debt. I went to one of the lowest ranked schools in my country (Canada) and not one employer asked where I went to school or cared.

    Just my two cents...

Maybe an unpopular opinion, but this is just my two cents, as I got into schools with amazing (tailored to my specific interests) programs vs. also-good-but-more-general programs, and I chose to attend the good, general, cheap program vs. my "dream school." Granted there were other factors for me (the cheaper school is only five hours from home vs. the opposite end of the country for the expensive school) but after thinking it over, I really don't want to be in a ton of debt when I graduate. Yes, job opportunities for SLPs are good, but in the end, you still have to pay off those loans, and it can take a lot of time if you're getting tens of thousands of dollars of debt. For me personally, I don't think that's worth $50k tuition when I could go to a school with $20k tuition. In the end, all the programs are ASHA certified and I'll get the experiences I need in order to be qualified to work in any setting as a SLP. (If it's worth anything, I would also love to become a professor, and I'll be honest, I'm a bit worried to be going to a school with less research opportunities, but... I want to avoid the debt, and I think on some level, it all comes down to the effort you put into it. I'm hoping to still get some research experience, and form strong relationships with my professors!)

This worries me too but remember speech-language pathology is one of those career paths where you'll always have a job and be able to pay off those loans. It's scary but if it's what you truly want to do you should do it. It's super expensive and loans are scary, but you'll get a job that pays well enough to pay them off.

I agree. SLPAs in CA don't even start at 40k so a CF shouldn't be anywhere near that.  I know a few CFs started off between 65-70k.

Toya reacted to futurespeechpath1 in Will getting 1 C ruin my chances for grad school?
Thank you to everyone who has replied! I just wanted to say that I have not gotten any C's yet I meant to say I may or may not get one. So far I have a 3.7 GPA outside the major and after this semester if I get a B which is what I'm aiming for I'll have a 3.6 in the major. I do aim for A's not B's and I understand I have a lot of B's right now...but after this semester if i get the B and not a C I'll have 4 A's and 4 B's. Then in the fall if I get A's in my major courses it'll be 7 A's and 4 B's.

Toya reacted to CaidanFire in Accepted off the waitlist and feeling INADEQUATE - SLP
Being waitlisted doesnt mean you were somehow not good enough or deficient.
Two different program directors explained it this way:
Many times, programs are looking to fill their cohorts with people from various backgrounds, interests, locations, experience, basically many things beyond grades and scores. They are often looking to diversify the cohort.
People who are waitlisted have what the program is looking for, but the cohort is developing a certain way as far as diversity and the 'feel' for the cohort. If the dynamics change or someone declines, then they have room and will fill that slot and the dynamics change from the original plan for that cohort. Does that make sense?
    Hope that helps
