Hey, I know there are people on this thread who applied to Irvine (Should I start a separate thread?) As far as I know, no one has had an offer from them. I was told that their meeting was Jan 21st-- the grad coordinator and admit chair made it sound like that was decision time, but maybe it was only the first of many?

My transcripts were missing originally. They are in now, and as a result of my communication with Irvine about that matter, I was told there was interest (Yes, this is the alter ego of Dirty_Window--I keep forgetting my password, so I have multiple user names now).

Anyway, this is my top choice for many reasons and I am so anxious about it. If any one has any inside info, I would love to hear i--even if it is just the result of a phone call or email.

I looked at last year's reports on it and it looks like people didn't really hear back until mid-February. Generally, even if the admit committee has made decisions, it takes a while to get admin on board for funding and things like that. I wouldn't really start to expect any reports until the end of next week (UC schools seem to report back start Feb 6/7?). I couldn't find much in the reports from last year, so maybe if someone has done more digging than me (I didn't apply to UCI) they could help. You're lucky--some schools I applied to don't get back to you until mid-March. Ugh!

Dear people,

It appears, scientifically, that digestion begins not when food enters the stomach, not even when it enters the mouth, but as early as the anticipation of a future meal, or the memory of a past one, excites the salivary gland. Thus, through a process that is, really, psychosomatism in disguise, purely mental images translate into a real, physical substance: saliva.

I have concluded—eureka—that the human condition is one of salivating, either forward or backward. We live in anticipation. Then we live in memory. Then we are no longer living.

Sincerely,

Fellow Secretion Mechanism

Hey folks. I figured I would just check in here, as I'm new to the forums. I finished most of my applications at the last minute (literally in the case of Purdue), and am worried that is going to scuttle my chances. A big part of my delay was the cost, I had to wait to save up to submit applications, which also kept me from applying to one program I really liked (didn't have another $90 sitting around). I may go insane here soon from the wait, I'm not used to having my future out of my hands like this.

I did all of mine day of also due to money issues and the fact that applications coincided with seminar paper due dates. I don't think it's an issue As long as the main app was in on time. The committees often don't meet for 3-4 weeks after you submit.

Backward salivating, eh?

Yes, a phenomenon remarkable not just for its inverse relation to logorrhea.

On another note, is there a financial aid deadline? Also, do we even need to fill out financial aid if it's the school or the department—not the gov't—is the one doling out the money, and doling it out based on merit rather than need?

Hey OSU applicants! Some of you have said that your OSU application status is "in review" and others have said that it's "pending." Mine says pending on appstatus. I can't see a reason why the system would use two different words to denote the same point in the process, so does anyone have any idea what the difference between pending and in review are? The waiting is starting to get to me. :)

The main page says pending and then if you click on "show more information" there's a blurb near the bottom that says "your app is in review...blah blah blah"

So it says both :)

I just got an Email from the DGS at St. Louis University, telling me they are recommending me for admission.

I made the mistake of reading it while teaching, and had to leave the room; my hands were shaking too hard and I thought I was going to cry.

And...someone please tell me because I've gone mad and can't remember, if they're "recommending" me, does that mean that I could still get rejected by the grad school?  Do I still need to be scared? Should I be drowning my hopes and bracing myself?

I'm freaking out.  3 cycles...almost 4...

Something like that happened to me recently. I think that while you COULD get rejected by the grad school, it's not very common.. but someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Yeah, I know in my brain that it's not common, but I'm heartily planted in the disbelief stage.

...is this something I can Email the DGS to ask, or is that tacky?

I think it's very rare that the graduate school rejects someone that the department recommends. If you're really unsure, you could reply and say thank you and ask if the graduate school often refuses candidates, or something like that. I think responding with a thank you is always a good way to sneak in follow-up questions :P

Well, so much for Louisville...

If you're not emotionally attached to Louisville, I would suggest you say, "Thank God for unanswered prayers" in this case. Something better is in the next email, for sure.

Where else are you waiting to hear from?

Did anyone hear from Duke? or NYU? They were the earliest deadlines i had, so I'm just curious. They did probably get a ridiculous amount of applicants though.

Thanks for that. Still waiting to hear from 7 other programs including OSU, Pitt, and NC State. I'm a compulsive planner, so not knowing is just killing me.

NYU began sending out application responses around Feb 7th last year (I also applied and looked it up), so I would start checking around then.

I'd be willing to sell my soul to get into Berkeley. Is that an option?

I'm waiting on both NYU and Duke as well. I'm also waiting for Notre Dame and Vanderbilt! All these schools have released around the first week in February, if not earlier, in previous years. I'm soooo nervous. And tired of waiting.

I know they are all so incredibly hard to get into though, so it may be a rough start to my decisions. :( lol. Even worse, the rejections seem to come out later than the acceptances. I'm dying of my obsessive thoughts! I try to distract myself, but it doesn't work. I check the results page numerous times a day to see when those few acceptances start going out.

And Horb, I wish you the best of luck. Maybe, in spite of all odds, we'll end up at the same school. :D But if you get in and I do not, I will assume you stole my spot and hunt you down.

Just playing. Here's to waiting in anxiety!
