Congrats to all the Washington admissions. 6% admission rate, pretty competitive!

That's great, but that's not how "admission rates" work.

By the way, I was wondering how much rankings like THE, QS, or Shanghai University ranking apply to grad schools (or are they more about undergraduate programs).

Also interesting whether they are authoritative in the US at all (a couple of my polisci fellows to whom I mentioned these rankings were unaware and/or unimpressed)

? What do you mean? My understanding was that they offered spots to 12 people.

I'm happy to claim one of the Washington admits as well.

BUT - I'm thinking that the 12 refers to Washington's desired incoming class size, not the total number of offers.  I know the wording of the letter made it seem otherwise, but doesn't that seem like a very low number?  That could easily leave them with an incoming cohort of 4 students.

It said, "You are one of 12 highly talented students who we hope to enroll in our program this coming autumn."  I interpreted that as the target enrollment, not the number accepted to reach that enrollment.

Why would they publish a target number, though? Seems unwise, if they happen to have a higher yield this year or something?

But doesn't it seem unlikely that publishing their target number would have any real effect on yield?

I know I'm a little late to the party today, but so good to know I'm not the only one with an "incomplete" for UM.

Also, congrats to all the Washington admits! That's great!

Another potential is that 12 is how many students they offered funding to - i.e. the students they actually hope/expect to enroll.  It's pretty odd wording, though, given my (albeit quite limited) understanding of the process.

edit: To those claiming admits to UW: is your status in any way changed on the website?  Congrats to all the acceptances, by the way : )

That wasn't what I meant at all. I just thought the wording was odd. What if they get 14 people this year, e.g.? Then current students will know for sure that they had a much higher yield than hoped/anticipated. Probably not a big deal, but just though it was an odd way to put it. I think I'm just overthinking everything in this process at this point, and I didn't even apply to wash...

Anyway, regardless of how many they actually sent offers to, everyone who got one can be really proud.

Everyone else: don't lose hope just yet! It's still early!

No status change on the website that I can see.

No status change for me on the website either, but the acceptance letter said to expect a formal acceptance letter from the graduate school soon.

Thanks!  I'm trying to decide if they just blasted emails to all the admits or not, it's hard to gauge from last year's info.  I suppose I'm not the best fit there, seeing as Ellis Goldberg's MENA interests and mine only tangentially intersect, but I was still hopeful.  Staying in the PNW is a huge plus for me.  Congrats again.

Anyone heard anything from UC-Santa Barbara, UC-Riverside, UNC, or Syracuse?

Posted

Maybe I'll just never hear from any school.

There is some relief in just hearing something, even if it is a reject! Hoping you hear from one of them soon.

The nervousness is starting to compound. I've been rejected by OSU, and presumably rejected by Cornell, University of Washington, and Chicago. Three more to go.

Best of luck to everyone, and congrats to everyone who's been accepted!

Penn is generally UPenn.

I feel you o.j... I'm also working with a presumed Cornell rejection and I too am surprised at how this one stings. I feel like after two early acceptances I started to totally over qualify my candidacy. Now I'm expecting a lot of rejections too. But hoping that of the 8 schools remaining, I can sneak into 1 or 2 :)

I think we may not hear from UPenn for another week -- just a feeling.

It is going to be OK. It is not the end of the world, and I do think that for all the competitiveness of the process, I don't think it is alone a reflection on you as a scholar or indeed a philosopher. So don't worry, I am sure something will come soon.
