MacPanther Posted March 16, 2018 Posted March 16, 2018 Congratulations to those accepted to UofT. Hopefully, Monday we hear more good news
And1 Posted March 16, 2018 Posted March 16, 2018 (edited) 5 hours ago, mphkeener said: Hey I have a question, Why if U of T is considered top notch, does it not have CEPH accreditation? Would a school like Western MPH ( which does have the accreditation) be a better option if I had the choice? I wouldn't put much weight into the CEPH accreditation. I worked at PHAC a few years ago, in a department that focused on public health education, so got to learn a bit (not an expert of course). CEPH is a US-accrediting body and basically just shows the program meets certain standards of public health education in the states. So, it would be important if you planned on working in the states. If not, then there's not much need to focus on the accreditation (certainly shouldn't be a deal breaker). There's no accrediting body in Canada so I think for some schools they still want to meet a certain standard (whether CEPH or APHEA, a European body, where USask is accredited at least last time I checked). But I assume for some schools, they wouldn't view meeting the education standards of another country as being necessary. When I was making my grad school decision for public health programs a couple of years ago, I put absolutely no weight on the accreditation. It doesn't indicate that schools with accreditation are better than those without! I would say focus more on the courses they offer, the program's focus, as well as their connections to the workforce. LinkedIn is a great resource to find current and recent graduates from the programs that you applied to and ask questions Edited March 16, 2018 by And1

I'll share my stats for U of T Health Promotion: 1. Academic grades: Cumulative GPA of 3.8. I don't know what my last year will be since some courses are still in progress (the offer email said I have to maintain a mid-B), but I expect it will be about that. 2. Social science background Very strong, in sociology specialist program (I don't know what they call it at other schools, but it's like a major except more upper year/core courses). 3. A statement of intent I think my letter was really strong. I talked about my "journey" with learning about the social determinants of health, weaving in my research experience in it, what I hope to do in the future if I get accepted. In particular, I talked about HIV, since that is where my experience and interests lie. 4. Experience 2 years of research experience, the last year of that was in a position where we looked at the social determinants of health (for HIV in immigrant women of colour). I have also been doing an internship at an AIDS Service Organization doing research for them on sexual health in youth. 5. Two letters of reference One was from my work supervisor for the HIV research position, and I actually read a previous letter he wrote and it was really excellent, so that helped. The other letter was weaker, it was from a professor I had for one course that I happened to get an A in, and it involved a research component (the course content was heavily on the social determinants of health as well). I hope this helps and good luck to everyone who is still waiting!!! goalsforgradschool 1

Usually more people discuss their UBC acceptances on the forum based on last year's thread, so don't be discouraged. I'm sure other people are still waiting to hear as no one has mentionned anything yet other than your friend's acceptance. Sending good vibes your way.

Spent the entire weekend going over my application - I think I read my LOI upwards of 20 times, as if it makes any kind of sense or difference to the situation. Surely UBC will send out notices this week. Surely! Edited March 19, 2018 by goldenblue openarms 1
Edward4321 Posted March 19, 2018 Posted March 19, 2018 (edited) I have received an email saying I have been recommended to the DLSPH MSc Biostatistics program. Still says "under review" in sgs. So it does appear they are sending out recommendations for some programs already. Seems earlier then last year. Edited March 19, 2018 by Edward4321
goalsforgradschool Posted March 19, 2018 Posted March 19, 2018 To everyone who has been admitted to U of T, congrats! I was wondering, are you all Ontario/Quebec residents? I'm wondering if grad schools generally allocate seats differently depending on geographical location of the applicant.

emilywpg Posted March 19, 2018 Posted March 19, 2018 A heads up, I received a recommendation for admission from U Alberta (Health Promotion) this afternoon.
