Speaking of Interview Attire...
jmk replied to SLPsingballs's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I'm actually staying with a friend in Portland! Meanwhile, I think you made the far better choice- with the snow, I'm not sure how I'm going to get from Portland to the interview! The initial plan was for me to borrow my friend's car, but I don't feel comfortable driving her car in any form of snow due to my lack of experience. I'll probably Lyft- which is going to be expensive. -

On Friday it's supposed to snow in Portland! I've been to the snow a few times...but never been in actively snowing snow?? The few times I went to the snow I was wearing skiing clothes and a snowsuit. Not sure how this will play into my outfit. Layers?? -

For my Oregon interview (I assume it'll rain) I was just going to bring a small umbrella & hope the walk isn't too long from my car to the location. -

I'm a fan (for myself) of a business dress, tights, a cardigan sweater, and flats. All purchased from Target, haha. -
I would go! It's best to fully commit to your back-up program, and then if you do get into your main, you just lose your deposit.

Question for LIU Post Interviewees
jmk replied to SLP2Bhopefully's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Thanks for the info!! -
Definitely wear what makes you feel the most confident, and comfortable! I plan on wearing a business dress, tights or nylons, and flats paired with a sweater. I'm also a tiny 90 lb chick & very femme, so pantsuits are typically baggy on me & don't make me feel at the top of my game.

I also tape post-it notes around my screen with points I want to make, and questions I want to ask. That way I'm not glancing down the entire time. I tape them so they won't fall off mid interview. I've only done a job interview through Skype, but it seemed to calm my nerves having some talking points.

Do you write on the spot with them watching, or you're given a set amount of time after? -
Question for LIU Post Interviewees

I wonder how a writing sample is done for the Skype interviews...:/ -
I feel ya, and support you. I'm in a similar spot- wasn't sure if I would get in anywhere. Wondering if I should cancel my interview at the school I wouldn't attend even if I was accepted. Don't want to waste time.

Acceptances, Waitlists, Rejections 2017
jmk replied to jmk's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I heard by email today about scheduling an interview (I put 2/13 but that's when I heard, no interview actually scheduled yet). I've seen on the forums that others have gotten interviews and even acceptances, so I assume they're doing rolling I think. -
You can update your FAFSA after acceptances to add in the school you will be attending. (I could dig around my email for the more eloquent wording I received on this, haha).

Hopefully this can be a tool for future applicants. Not sure if there is already a similar thread. I know a lot of folks post this information in their signatures as well. Feel free to post your stats, or simply just update as admissions roll in! STATS: Cumulative GPA: 3.51 CSDCAS cumulative GPA (re-took a failed Sociology course): 3.49 Last 60: 3.73 Major: 3.89 (9 pre-reqs completed at time of application, a senior & majoring in CD) GRE: V 157 Q 145 AW 5.0 (Also sent some schools my first GRE of V 152 Q 149 and AW 5.0) Experience: 2 semester long undergraduate clinic aide positions (pediatric AAC and adult neurogenics clinics; received 1 unit of credit). Observed 6 months each at two pediatric private practices. Spent a summer volunteering at a social skills camp under an SLP. Volunteered a year in a hospital setting in the speech department. Worked at a pediatric OT clinic in an (uncertified) OTA-esque position for 3.5 years. NSSLHA Treasurer. Anatomy & neurolinguistics tutor through a professor for students the year below me in the major Operation Smile (club linked with NSSLHA at my school) community service committee. Accepted: Northern Arizona University (2/1) Interview: Texas Tech Health Sciences Center (3/4 Skype), Pacific University (2/24), LIU-Post (2/13) Rejected: Cal State LA (2/13)

I just got a request from LIU Post. I've seen that others have gotten interviews (and I think acceptances) so I'm assuming they're rolling. I applied last minute the day before the deadline. I haven't e-mailed back yet, but there doesn't seem to be a Skype option hinted at. If there isn't, I will most likely withdraw my app.

Did you ever retake any classes? I retook a sociology course- first grade was an F, second grade was an A. My school did grade replacement so the F "disappeared", but CSDCAS states that it takes both grades & calculates them. Thus- my cumulative at my university is slightly higher than my CSDCAS cumulative.

I heard back from NAU 2/1, and didn't have an interview. I don't know of anyone else who applied to Texas Tech (in real life or these forums). I was given the option of Skype (early March) or in person (the same day yours is on) so I assume they are just doing all of the in person interviews the same day! I thought that interview was really late. I chose Skype because I couldn't fly out.

I'm probably going to fly! I have friends/family in Portland so wouldn't pay hotel. I can come across as really sugary/passive, so that's something I'm trying to work on. You're going to love the town!! I have a friend at Pacific in the OT program, and she has given nothing but glowing reviews about the school. Plus you get a tiny break from the Illinois chill, haha.

1st Offense DUI after applying to grad school
jmk replied to SLPwannabe1's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Don't be too hard on yourself. As mentioned above, I would contact the graduate departments (not the CD department) and ask about the policy. After acceptance/s, I would then ask to meet with the program director in person. I would also wait until the charge is officially on your record before disclosing...so sometime before you would start Fall semester. Also, I would definitely search around and look into minimizing or expunging since it's your first offense. I just did a quick Google, and saw that one of the options is an Accelerated Rehab program where you take classes, undergo probation, then can have the offense expunged. Or plea bargaining. I type the above things with zero knowledge about the legal system, haha. Have you talked with an attorney? -
I'm going!! I didn't even realize there was a Skype option. I'm only in CA but am a 10 hour drive, or $150 plane ride away haha. I'm a bit nervous. It's the first grad school interview I'll have done, and Oregon is basically tied with my home state in terms of being my "first choice." I would love to get in touch!

How many grad schools did you apply to?
jmk replied to SpeechLaedy's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Eastern WA, University of Oregon, Portland State, Pacific (Oregon), Idaho State, Northern AZ, Texas Tech Health Center, CSU's: SFSU, Chico, Fullerton, LA, San Marcos. CA Privates: Chapman, Redlands. I was sitting at pretty "average" cumulative GPA/GRE's, and wanted to stay West Coast which seems to always be talked about as really competitive. -
I'm in the same boat as SpeechLaedy
