  1. New York Medical College MGH Uni of Akron Case Western U of Pittsburgh Rush Vanderbilt U of Illinois (Are all schools that I've seen floating around as more "medically based" on these forums). My anatomy professor, who also works as an SLP in a city hospital, recommended students who want to work in the hospital setting (particularly a high ranking hospital) should definitely try to get the edge in a Masters program that provides excellent clinical and academic opportunities geared toward the medical setting. Many medical CF positions are easier to obtain if you come in with that extra training. She went to New York Medical College. The above is merely one opinion, not fact, haha.
  2. Thank you all for the input! It has been much appreciated!
  3. 1: Q: 145, V 157, AW 5.0 Total: 302 2: Q: 148, V 152, AW 4.5 Total: 300 148 is my highest quant score. I've taken the test three times- the first time was a 139 Quant. GRE is definitely one of my weaknesses. I am torn between sending the higher quant, versus sending the overall higher scoring test. Most of my schools do not superscore (take the highest from multiple tests). Thoughts?
  4. I heard through the grapevine (no fact) that those references aren't used for our program. I guess some different programs use the CSU Mentor references, but since we're sending letters, I don't think they get used.
  5. Definitely! The school speech pathologist sounds like a great 3rd letter. For most programs, I am having 2 CD professors write, and then my boss (I work in pediatrics).
  6. I would carefully read each school's website. You indeed need to mail transcripts to CSDCAS from your current institution (or past if you attended multiple colleges.) Some schools that are not on CSDCAS want 1-2 sets of transcripts. Some just require unofficial. Others may be on CSDCAS, but also want a set of transcripts.
  7. Most schools require three letters- at least 2 academic, and then one clinical (or academic). Questions: Are you introverted? Was the course online? Did you not participate very much in class? The above questions are not meant to come off as rude, but moreso for yourself to figure out the situation. Needless to say, I would steer clear of any professor that doesn't seem genuinely excited to write your letters. One mediocre letter of "student can earn the grade but doesn't have the interpersonal skills and would not be a good clinician" is an app killer. I personally would not go with the professor that said s/he didn't know your writing or verbal abilities. You want an excited "yes, I would love to write your letter! Schedule an appt and we can talk about your potential schools!" as a response.
  8. I would send your transcripts now, and then a follow up transcript in December. Many folks apply to grad school in their senior year of college, so courses are obviously in progress for a majority of applicants. I sent in all of my transcripts, then will be doing an academic update in December/January when my grades for this semester come in. I would also e-mail the program that starts in summer regarding the required course, and see if taking a course Spring semester would be alright.
  9. ETS has been glitchy for days...weeks? Last week it kept saying that certain dates were open, and when I went to click to see times, it would then say "no available seats." Frustrating, and took a few days for me to finally be able to register.
  10. @Puffer Fish- I know you mentioned that observation hasn't worked out, but I'm pretty confident that if you went in and observed somewhere from Oct-Dec (telling them you would only be there that long from the start), you could get a letter at the end. Right now do you have 1 academic and 1 professional, or 2 academic?
  11. I feel you! I have 120 in my "senior cohort" and am constantly being bombarded with snapchats about GRE studying binges, perfectly organized grad school lists, etc. I love how I have a friend group to talk about the process with, but sometimes hearing about how so and so already has all of their letters of rec in doesn't feel all too great. My cumulative GPA is parallel to yours, but my GRE has only gone from a 299 to a 304, so I'm debating a third test. -.- In the end- you just have to throw your hat into the ring. There are a lot of folks with lower GPA's who would love to have a 3.6.
  12. @Kate22192- out of the 4 programs you are applying too, you say only one is on CSDCAS. So, for that program, you will apply through CSDCAS as well as read the program's own website to see what materials you need to send for that program. For the three programs that are not on CSDCAS, you should look at the program websites to see when and what materials they want sent in. 3/4 of the schools I am applying to are on CSDCAS, but 1/4 are not.
  13. Very similar boat as you- second test Quant went up, but Verbal went down. I'm only sending my second (stronger overall) test unless the school's website states that they take the highest scores.
  14. As someone with a similar GPA, I've also come across that frustration. Some websites provide the average stats of previous cohorts, which is a nice gauge. Meanwhile, I have also found that searching the forums (time consuming) has painted a better picture. Reading old threads about acceptances where users list their GPA and GRE, as well as what schools they were accepted to, in their signatures has honestly been the most helpful.
  15. Retook the GRE today! My quant went up...which is what I needed. Meanwhile, my verbal went down 2pts, haha. Overall, I increased my score a few points. My GRE's are still really average, but at least I don't have a total red flag quant deficit going on. Also, CSDCAS transcript request forms are a bit confusing to me. Looks like I'll have to go into the registrar for all of my transcripts, which does not sound like fun. Whenever I try to order transcripts online, I can't add the request form anywhere.
  16. I would email or check departmental websites for all of the programs you are interested in.
  17. Hi! After stalking these forums for two application cycles, I'm more than excited to be a part of this one! I will be applying for Fall 2017. I'm going into my senior year of college- though it'll actually be my 5th year due to changing majors. Currently I'm not very happy with my quant GRE score, and have been studying in hopes of pulling it up when I take the test mid August.
  18. @Crimson Wife- many thanks! The MAT had not even crossed my mind, and there appears to be a healthy dabbling of programs across the U.S. that accept such. For anyone else in CA looking into the MAT- Bakersfield offers the test M-Th for $100, and East Bay offers it one Friday a month for $90. I called almost every place on Pearson's list, and some on the list actually no longer proctor the exam (like Fresno). @ImHis- thanks! It's definitely hard to feel motivated after such a score, but I am trying to keep my focus up.
  19. I was pretty disappointed with my quant GRE: V 155, Q 144, AW 5.0 I signed up for the GRE again mid August. I don't feel as though I can adequately continue to prep when the semester starts unless I change some things around. My GPA is 4.0 in major, 3.9 last 60, and 3.6 cumulative, and I will be a senior this year. Lengthy resume, strong personal statements and letters of rec. I had been planning to apply in WA, OR, CA. Obviously my quant score is too much of a deficit to make it in these competitive states. I also took a prep class over the summer, and was scoring higher (152-155) in quant on all the practice tests. Not sure if the practice tests (Manhattan online) were curved, or if for some reason I just really bombed the actual exam. I am debating my next move, and feeling pretty discouraged as I start to totally redo my list of schools. -Keep current score, change list of schools? -Study when I can over the next few weeks (was not planning to retake GRE due to prep class confidence, and cannot devote as much time as I was doing before due to trips) -Push my GRE date out, and rearrange my schedule to really hit the books Thoughts, advice, etc. would be appreciated!
  20. Yes- because it's cumulative (all institutions attended) GPA. Meanwhile, I would use a GPA calculator and figure out your new GPA. 3 semesters of under 3.0 work isn't going to sink you too bad when you combine. Plus, those grades are way in the beginning of your academic history.
  21. I am not sure about Nevada or Arizona either. You should look at programs and find ones that fit your interests. Some good advice I was told was that if you don't throw your hat into the ring, you have no chance at all. I think being informed and educated about admit rates of programs is a powerful tool to wisely compile a list of places to apply to especially if you have a lower GPA or GRE. For programs you are interested in, I would just email them if it isn't listed on their website.
  22. Thank you for this amazing resource! I am thinking of printing my spreadsheet out, as well as keeping an online copy. I am definitely feeling a bit overwhelmed...I have about 35 schools of interest I need to trim down haha. One thing that came to mind Some schools like CSULA, even though on CSDCAS, require the letters of rec to be sent to the department (at least when I checked last time...this info could be wrong now). I am only going to ask for X amount of letters of rec, so my non-CSDCAS school slots (or schools that need letters sent outside of CSDCAS) are limited haha, meaning that I am now combing over department websites RE letters of rec.
  23. This topic brings up a fair amount of subjective opinions haha. Mine: For CA publics, I would say no. My school, and I would assume the majority, of the CA publics (aka the CSU system [San Diego State, CSU East Bay, etc.]), take a certain % of their own undergrads to fill the cohort. For a 30 person cohort I know of so far 9 seniors at my school who were accepted into our program. Many school websites, like San Diego State, list the average cumulative GPA as a 3.8 for acceptance. Most CA residents are going to apply to at least some CA schools. Two folks from my department were admitted into Columbia Teacher's College, but denied multiple CSU admissions. Granted- Teacher's College takes 120 students, and the CSU's do not.
  24. Before you start looking into other courses, I would definitely continue to try your hardest to check in with your department about the changes and your concerns. For some reason different schools have slight differentiation to their pre-req names, which sure doesn't help us haha. I could be mistaken, but I am pretty sure for ASHA accreditation undergrad programs offering the CSD major have to adhere to a certain set of coursework. In terms of applying to grad schools, as long as you were a CSD major, I have seen on my program websites "take these pre-reqs...or have been a CSD major." Though the pre-reqs seem to all differ a bit, you should be covered as a CSD major! Once you narrow down your list of target schools, you could always email them just for extra reassurance!
  25. Don't rehash your whole resume in your SOP. Just focus on one or two experiences that really defined what this field is for you. Also, could you ask a LOR writer to highlight your upward grade trend instead?
