low GRE, high GPA- what are my chances?
Crimson Wife replied to Anna Hernandez's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
If math is a weakness, you might want to give the Miller Analogies Test a shot. I have heard of people doing much, much better on the MAT than the GRE and there are a number of schools that will accept either. -
Some states require SLP's who want to work in the public schools to take one or more specific courses as part of either the bachelor's or the master's. Usually it is a SPED course like "Education of Exceptional Students". Mostly the goal I think is to familiarize the school-based SLP with IEP's and the Federal IDEA law.

Mass General Institute has a reading specialist track but obviously that's in Boston rather than the Pacific NW.- 1 reply

Vanderbilt is extremely selective so unless you're able to retest and pull up your GRE scores in the next few months, you may want to add another less-selective school to your list. ASHA EdFind lists a GRE range at Vandy of 156-170 V and 152-165 Q.

I got in! :)

Congrats and best wishes with your studies. Personal connections are always helpful -
Does the 3.3 GPA include your master's or just the bachelor's? If it includes the MAT, then I don't think you will be competitive for extended master's programs, sorry! Now if that's just the bachelor's and you have a higher GPA including your MAT, then you might have a shot depending on your GRE scores.

SLP Related Majors/Careers

OT is at least as competitive, if not more so. I know several OTA's who are stuck making a relatively low wage in their current position because they haven't been able to get into grad school for OT. My original grad school interest was Academic Language Therapy/educational therapy and I might still get the certificate for that at some point since a master's in SLP plus the certificate would meet the educational requirements. The major difference between SLP and ALT/EDT is that SLP focuses on oral language whereas ALT/EDT focuses on written language and other academic skills. ALT/EDT is typically done 1:1 for 60 minute sessions rather than teaching in a classroom all day like SPED. My personality is a better "fit" for that type of work setting. The certified ALT's/EDT's in my neck of the woods charge around $100/hr and while that includes overhead, that's not a bad pay rate. I ended up deciding against finishing my application to a Master's in EDT when my daughter's hearing loss was discovered last year. I would've been halfway done with grad school by now rather than finishing up my 2nd bachelor's and then looking at 2 more years of grad school. But SLP makes more sense in light of the hearing loss. -
Tuition: How Much is Too Much?

I've got my CSDCAS list but am trying to figure out which non-CSDCAS schools to apply to. I don't want to be a total pain to my LoR providers. -

Loan forgiveness is not just limited to SLP's working in the schools but also is open to those who work for non-profit hospitals as well. Now if you hope to have your own private practice, then that wouldn't qualify. But after 10 years working for a non-profit you'd be free to switch to a different setting. -

Do you have student loans from undergrad? Are you single or married? There are so many individual factors. I don't have any student loans right now and my husband makes enough to support our family (currently I'm a SAHM). So my ability to pay back grad school loans is probably higher than a lot of people. I am looking at some fairly expensive schools but not the most expensive ones like Northwestern. I plan on working for a non-profit school or hospital so I should qualify for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program. -
More competitive for grad school?
Crimson Wife replied to kate775's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
SLP is a clinical degree and most schools do not require a thesis. If you are interested in potentially doing a PhD. at some point, research would be important. Otherwise, I would focus on getting observation hours and related work/volunteer experience. I did my 1st UG degree in 3 1/3 years because of finances and I don't think it will impact my chances at all. -
I'll have a 2nd bachelor's so technically it is all at the undergraduate level and not post-bacc. UCLA doesn't offer SLP (none of the UC's do, only the CSU's) so I'm not sure why you linked to them.

This is referring to semester units, yes? So if my 1st bachelor's was from a school on the quarter system, I would first need to convert the quarter units to semester units (e.g. 3 Q.U. = 2 S.U.), count back 60, and then calculate the GPA? Or is the other way around- convert the semester units into quarter units, count back 60, and then calculate the GPA?

Where can I take online Intro Audiology?
Crimson Wife replied to oakfordr's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Utah State's COMD 3700 is a very easy class. Don't need the textbook as all the exam questions are from the lectures. -
Your program didn't have an observations course? You can take that through Utah State (COMD 5900) or Eastern NM (CDIS 441). You could also check Wisconsin-Eau Claire and ID State since those both offer a wide selection.

Do you qualify for any tuition reimbursement through your job? Re-taking CSD courses won't help your GPA any more than taking different courses because CSDCAS will factor both grades into their calculation. So you might as well take classes towards a teaching credential if your employer will pay for those. SPED, Applied Behavioral Analysis, Clinical Rehab Services, or CLAD credential courses would be related enough to SLP that you could make a case that A's in them show your ability to handle grad school in SLP. And if you wind up finishing the credential, you can qualify for a better-paying job in the schools.
-
Have you contacted the CSD department heads? I've found that some schools are fine with applicants who have all but 1-2 courses. I've yet to find a "working with multicultural populations" CSD class available online and my 2nd bachelor's doesn't offer voice or fluency. I might take those latter two elsewhere but it depends on my final list of schools.

I think you have decent stats but it's such a crap shoot. UT Dallas for example gets ~850 applicants for ~160 slots. None of your other target schools are on my list but you can check ASHA EdFind to see what they have to say.

The most asked question: Will I get in?
Crimson Wife replied to arz_a's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
CSDCAS will factor in both the original grade as well as the retake. Non-CSDCAS schools may or may not, you'd have to check. I would encourage applying to programs that only look at the last 60 credits attempted given your community college GPA. If you can get your GRE's up to >300 total and at least 50th percentile on the quant (that would be I believe a 153 but I'm not 100% sure), I'd say you've got a decent shot. -
Our Lady of the Lake in San Antonio has a bilingual track and is less competitive. Their post-bacc does not automatically grant admission to the Master's but it might be something to apply to as a back-up.

Will CSDCAS Add Schools?
Crimson Wife replied to Crimson Wife's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Good suggestion. 2 of my target schools popped up when I did this, though 2 others didn't. -
I started a CSDCAS app last year but decided to hold off on applying until this cycle. I just updated my app and noticed that a few of my target schools that participated in CSDCAS last year are no longer listed. Is it just that the cycle is opening in early August this year vs. late September last year and they'll be added later after summer break is over? Or is the list of participating schools likely to be final? I'm trying to limit the number of non-CSDCAS schools to a reasonable number, and will really have to think hard about which ones if fewer schools are doing CSDCAS this year.

Might want to consider taking the Miller Analogies Test. There is no math and I've heard of people scoring much higher on the MAT than the GRE-V. There are a number of schools that will accept the MAT in lieu of the GRE.
